What makes this raw chocolate mousse recipe so special? The addition of avocado gives it that fluffy, mousse-like texture. And to get the full effect of the texture, you'll want to refrigerate it for at least 1 hour before noshing on it!

Note that the coconut oil is an important ingredient - it's what helps the mousse harden up a bit in the fridge.

Because this is such a small recipe, it whips up best when made in a food processor.

For extra flavor and fun, add fresh berries to your mousse when eating!

PS: Make sure your banana and avocado are fresh and at the peak of perfection.

Hi Claudia!
Glad to hear it is yummy! I want to make it soon as well!

How long did it take for you to grow the avocado and banana trees? I really want to grow them because I am obsessed with avocados and bananas (among other things!).... I live in California. Do you think it would grow well here?

Thanks!

P.S. Roughly how many servings does this make?

Sorry, Brittany, the coconut oil is necessary as it helps to thicken and/or solidify certain recipes. In this case you can omit the coconut oil - the pudding just won't be as thick.

I have some avid banana haters in my house. If I wanted to leave the banana out, would you recommend just adding more avocado? or more coconut oil? Or upping both a little? Thanks in advance!

Tasted the mix out of the food processor as did Mr 5. I did mine with the addition of a blood orange (rind and juice).....jaffa mousse.....passed the taste test with flying colours!! 8 serves in the fridge (I doubled recipe using 3 med avos and 2 lg bananas) chilling for family dinner for 8 tomorrow night. BRING it ON!

Laura Jane,

This is so fabulous. Made it for a picnic this weekend and going to use it for a cooking class on Friday. My husband says it reminds him of his mother's Dutch chocolate pudding recipe in which she would add orange zest to. I will try that next time...

The avocado should be fine (as long as it wasn't too old when you used it). It will harden a bit in fridge though, so keep that in mind - it'll be more solid on the second day

Hi Holly,

The avocados are for creaminess - you can do cashews instead - but you will need to do it in the blender instead.

maybe 1/3 cup cashews should do it - or maybe 1/2 cup somewhere in between there

I don't recommend it, but if you must use something else instead of the banana then there are two things to consider: Banana is used for creaminess and sweetness.

For the creaminess, you can add another avocado instead.
But you will need to add something else to sweeten it, like dates and/or a sweetener (agave/maple syrup/honey etc)

I've made this recipe 3 times now. The first time I was so surprised just how delicious it was. The second time I made the mistake of using frozen banana (all I had) which made the mousse granular. The third time I added some orange essence - delicious! Next I want to try peppermint essence. You could almost use it as frosting, it's so rich! The boyfriend loves it too. And my brother (using maple syrup, as he's vegan).

In this recipe the banana provides two pain purposes: (1) sweetness (2) creaminess. You could omit the banana and add another avocado for the creaminess and bump up the sweetener to taste.

Hope this helps :)

thank you so much for sharing all this yummy recipes with us. I'm really interested in finding out about that raw pasta (i forgot the name) which you're crazy about!!! i live in sydney!! what should i look for??? anyway, i'll try to find.

another question if that's ok??

what about frozen berries? is this allowed??? i did the cheesecake thet you have here (turned out amazing) but did the topping with frozen berries then i started to wonder.

thank you again!!! XOXOOX

Hi Julia, Welcome to my world! Glad to have you here :)

70% raw is an awesome goal. Sounds like you are thriving already.

As far as raw pasta goes, I used to be really into "kelp noodles" (you buy them from a store - like these www.kelpnoodles.com) but lately I have just been spiralizing zucchini to make my own noodles. It's super easy.

Re: frozen berries, it is obvious to me that "fresh" is better than frozen hands down. For example, someone who claims that a berry frozen for a year is just as healthy as a freshly plucked strawberry of the vine is clearly delusional. BUT, that being said, I do eat frozen berries all the time because it is just not practical for me to eat fresh berries all year long (due to price and availability). So... go for it. :)

Hi Rachael. If you type "raw cacao toxic" (or anything similar) into Google there is heaps on information available. Sorry to everyone if I sounded negative - that wasn't my intention at all! I think it's important to share information so I thought I would note my reasons for using cocoa instead of cacao. Another reason is that I feed all these amazing, wonderful raw creations to my kids - so it's important that all ingredients are 100% safe. Thanks Rawtarian for a beautiful recipe and an awesome website!

Lisa, aren't these two basically the same? Cacao and cocoa, check on the web. I'm sure the heating up aspect of cocoa/cacao is not good, it is never good to heat up fat and oils as this releases carcinogenics and more unpleaseantries.

If you use raw cacao/cocoa you should be ok. And, as always, use everything in moderation :-)
