Recipe Directions

Blend and enjoy. (The celery is just a few baby pale stalks and leaves from the heart). NB The turmeric I used in first rendition of this must have been super strong because in the remakes the flavour has not come through as much. If you are able to get hold of some keep adding it until you get the right balance of tastes!

Mopoke's Thoughts

It kicks! Turmeric, strawberries, beet and more make a drink as punchy as it is colourful….Turmeric is that pungent, bright yellow, woody-tasting spice that promotes proper metabolism, healthy heart and clear skin It’s great for stomach ailments, blood cleansing and – would you believe – sprains? The taste? .......... Unique… From Lost Knob comes a final offering: A tantalising beverage with fascinating mouth feel. Pungent and woody turmeric notes come through strongly and leave an intriguing aftertaste amplified by the woodiness of the beet and counterpointed by the tang of strawberry and orange… The vibrant ‘red on red’ hue is deeply intensified by the golden stain of the fresh turmeric….... The palate is long and slightly acrid ..And I apologise if I’ve pinched anyone else’s recipe, but I haven’t seen it anywhere else and this was so good I had to christen it and make it public.

This sounds very intriguing. How much of the beet flavor comes through (I detest them, but will occasionally force them down for medicinal purposes)? My local co-op just started carrying fresh turmeric and I'd love to try this.

A response to "123"'s comment...Maybe the name came from the idea of sacred things. Cows are sacred in some cultures. Could this beverage be a sacred blessing in the form of a smoothie?! Just a thought!

Wow is all I can say about this recipe! I can't wait to try it especially since I can't stand raw beets either but know they are good for me. Cooked beets I love but raw ones I just don't really like at all. Thanks

virtualdistortion.. for some reason that small first knob of turmeric I used was incredibly concentrated (maybe because it was old and shrivelled....I agree you should use more turmeric...will alter the recipe!

Sueko - the beet in that small quantity doesn't come through much at all :)

I purchased some fresh, organic turmeric root before I knew what to do with it.. so I was overjoyed when I found this recipe. I LOVE IT. However, I used spinach instead of radicchio, juice from 2 tangerines instead of oranges plus threw in some peel, added raspberries and sprouted flax seeds. I probably added 2 times the amount of turmeric, since the taste was not overwhelming with the original amount but it still wasn't when I doubled it.

In Australia a Red Bull is a soft drink that has a 'kick' maybe from caffeine? I think it's produced by one of the larger soft drink manufacturers.

My 'cow' is a reactionary feminazzi kind of beast.

But she's also into nourishing... I love the notion 'sacred blessing in the form of a smoothie'. Aren't we lucky to be blessed to live in a world where there are life sustaining things to eat!

Love it! Delightful, Thank You!!! Used galangal since I could not find fresh turmeric root - plus a spoonful of dry powdered turmeric just because, although all that boiling surely renders it impotent *shrugs* The beet, radicchio and OJ with the strawberries... I never would have thought of it, very creative :)

Yum Turil -- I'm on the smoothie hunt now :)..but I don't yet associate the word 'smoothie' with something so different to a traditional smoothie.

123, that's why the name 'Red Cow'came out as I was typing in the recipe - I guess because the colour is indeed red, there's the *kick* from the turmeric and this drink also 'gives you wings' ......no bull ;) - in fact, now I think on it, maybe all drinks that 'give you wings' - should be called 'cows?'(or maybe just the turmeric ones? Today I will get more turmeric because now I want to play with colours and make the Green Cow...and a few others as well. Also because while it revved me up a bit last thing at night, I have woken feeling *dynamic* and I now want more of those medicinal effects. Cheers :)

Good to know about powdered tumeric. I use the stuff all the time, so I'm sad that it's not raw. Some day I'm sure I'll find some fresh stuff.

And yeah, I love these wild smoothies. I just had a beet, orange, chard, apple, fresh ginger, chili pepper smoothie that was really fun! And all but the ginger was local and organic.

Just did some research and found the powdered turmeric you buy in jars starts off with the fresh turmeric root (related to the ginger family) being boiled "for hours" then dried for days or weeks before being pulverised.

This recipe calls for *fresh* turmeric. If there's none available then fresh ginger may hint at the Red Cow taste. Cheers :)
