1 cup dates

1/4 cup raw cacao (cocoa) powder

1/4 cup cold-pressed coconut oil (also known as coconut butter)

3/4 cup water (or a tiny bit more if needed - try to keep at 3/4 cup or so though)

Directions

1. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender. If possible, let them sit in there for a few minutes to soften the dates a little bit.

2. Blend all ingredients in your high-speed blender. The ingredients can be a little finicky to blend, so start at a slow speed and increase speed slowly.

3. Keep blending for a very long time to get a velvety consistency. This is one of those recipes that really makes use of the power of a high-speed blender. If you feel that the blades are just spinning but aren't actually moving all of the icing around, turn the blender off and make an air pocket down the side of the blender with a spatula to expose the blades. Remove the spatula, replace the lid, and start blending slowly again.

4. You'll know it's ready if there are no bits of dates and all you can taste is velvety chocolate goodness.

5. This raw chocolate icing is ready to use as soon as you pour it out of the blender.

It's a great raw vegan icing for cakes, brownies and the like! Iced cakes or brownies should be kept in the refrigerator.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

Raw chocolate icing... I am having difficulty understanding how the combination of four basic ingredients could taste so divine.

I mean, this raw chocolate icing only contains dates, cacao, coconut oil and water. Sounds boring, right? It must just taste like pasty dates, right?

Wrong! This tastes like raw chocolate icing that you'd get at some high-brow raw vegan restaurant. It has a smooth, chocolatey, velvety texture and sweet, chocolatey mousse-like taste. Plus, it's really easy to work with and spread.

I was inspired to whip up a batch of raw chocolate icing to go on top of my raw brownies. Yeah, the combination of those raw brownies and this icing is pretty much heavenly. This raw chocolate icing has a very handy consistency--it's a lot like mousse when kept in the fridge.

This raw chocolate icing could also double as a raw pudding if you were feeling sad and needed to eat some chocolate out of a bowl with a spoon to make yourself feel better. :)

Oh, my! I can't wait! I will be making this tomorrow!

I thought this was a bit bitter, even with the dates, so I added approx 1/4 cup of raw honey and...divine! I drizzled it over some raw pie I made. I made the pie crust with walnuts and almonds instead of cashews like the recipe on this site, I layered the crust with freshly cut bananas and drizzled this over. It was sooo good! Even to people who aren't used to healthy desserts! Thank you for the wonderful recipe! I'll be trying fresh strawberries next with the pie crust and this drizzled over.

I agree, I added a splash of vanilla essence and about a tbsp of agave nectar to make it to my tastes

this is gorgeous. just made it then and it was so easy and delicious!

Yummm!! I bet this would be fantastic on simple bananas... or dare I say... on some raw ice cream.

oh so divine!

Glad you ladies are having success with this so far :)

Oh my god! It it so delicious! I added ground vanilla bean, lucuma, maca andd a oinch of salt...Hum... Can't wait to share those divine brownies with my mother on Mother's day!

Thank you SO much for sharing...

:))))) Welcome to the world of raw brownies.

Thou art a genius. Glad I found your site! Will be prowling round the recipes later when the littluns allow. x

The Rawtarian's picture

:)

wow, it's a bit too rich for me, but very tasty. Next time, I'll cut back on the dates.

The Rawtarian's picture

I don't find it too rich for my tastebuds when I spread a thin layer on brownies. Anyone else think it's too rich?

no it's perfectly creamy

Perfect! I'm having friends over this evening, and wanted to serve them raw chocolate brownies with icing, but the icing recipe I always used needs a ripe avocado, and I just bought avocados, but they're still hard as rocks. This recipe looks like it'll be a great alternative.

It also, coincidentally, looks kind of like a thicker version of the raw chocolate pudding I love to make (coconut meat, instead of coconut oil, in my recipe). Given which, I have no doubts at all that this'll be delicious!

Have fun with your dinner party!

Love this icing! Really, this is once incredible creation! I don't crave many things from the 'junk food' days, but icing, ya, I missed it. But this, THIS is truly better than any bakery icing. I soaked the dates in the water called for in the recipe first and it blended up super fast!

Thank you xo

I am glad you found the recipe and are happy with it Cynthia. Thx for letting me know, I like to know what you gals like! :)

sounds delicious – would the consistency be appropriate to use as a chocolate “dip” (for fruit etc?). if not, can you suggest how to make it so?

The Rawtarian's picture

Yes, it could work as a choco dip. Just be sure to use the coconut oil because you need the Coco oil in order for it to firm up.

Also, refrigerate for a couple of hours so that it gets a little thicker. Actually, I would refrigerate and keep in refrigerator until ready to eat immediately after.

Also, this is another nice dip for fruit - not chocolate but nice sweet vanilla cream flavor: http://www.therawtarian.com/raw-fruit-dip

mmmm just made this AND the Brownie, absolutely delicious, so good I can hardly believe it!! Thank you and yummmmmm.....
PS Ate heaps straight off the spoon during the process, but still some for later.

Love it!! And who can resist the spoon?? We are all human :)

Hello! Just wanted to tell you I made the chocolate cake with this frosting last night and am eating it now for lunch. This frosting is AMAZING! It tastes the same, if not better, than real frosting. I will be using this on all cakes I make from now on! Thanks for the great recipe!

The Rawtarian's picture

Haha, I know, it IS as good as real frosting. BUT BETTER! Because it's good for ya!

:)

Looking forward to trying this recipe, Jane. Wondering though which to use - coconut oil or coconut butter. I have both...
Thanks!

Just covered some organic strawberries, hope they work out, delicious

This recipe is keeping me raw!

that's like music to my ears

So tasty! I couldn't waste the little bits left in my blender so before cleaning it out, I made a smoothie with half a banana, some raspberries, almond milk and a big green chard leaf and I think its one of the best green smoothies I've ever had!

The Rawtarian's picture

Great way to clean the blender and to get all those little yummy bits out :)

fresh or dried dates?

The Rawtarian's picture

dry

I just love your recipes. I'm new to raw food and am enjoying it so much more than I thought possible. These treats are a gateway to raw food!

Hi Mari,

I am happy to announce that I have finally added a Pinterest button! Thank you for your suggestion, I always like to hear what would make this website a better place.

I used this over your Raw Turtles recipe :) Delish! I added some unsweetended shredded coconut to the turtles and topped them with the chocolate icing and then placed a pecan on top. Beautiful and delicious. Thank you!

It was great when a couple of raw eggs were added to it! My vegan friends were quite bowled over and ate up my entire chocolate cake of 5 lbs!

You fed eggs to your vegan friends? D:

lol

Wow

OH MY G-D!!!!

I need to be alone with my brownies, now!

The Rawtarian's picture

I *so* understand this feeling haha. Seriously!

Hi there! Can the cold-pressed coconut oil be substituted for virgin coconut oil?

The Rawtarian's picture

definitely

Hi there, thanks for the recipe. I'm from Malaysia and Medjool dates are not normally available here (at least not without costing a bomb) so I always make raw desserts with prunes instead of dates and they are still amazing! I made a small batch to frost dear hubby's birthday cake (much better than normal frosting!) The leftover was even richer and yummier after a day in the fridge! In order to stop myself from finishing up the half-cup leftover with the fridge door still open, I decided to blend it with a cup of plain yogurt and popped it into the freezer for some guilt-free chocolate ice-cream. Can hardly wait! Thanks so much for the recipe! :D

The Rawtarian's picture

Hi Chelsea, I love prunes! I have just gotten into them lately. I am looking forward to trying this recipe with prunes instead of dates!

All I can say about this raw chocolate icing is OMG! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ONE :)
