1 cup pecans (you can use walnuts in a pinch, but pecans are much better!)

1 cup dates

5 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder

4 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut

2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Directions

1. Place pecans alone in your food processor and process until the pecans become small and crumbly.

2. Add dates to the raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.

3. Add the remaining ingredients to this raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture turns a lovely dark chocolatey brown. Stop processing before it gets too buttery. (There should still be air between the small bits so that you will be able to press them down into your brownie pan.)

4. Dump the mixture into a brownie dish or small cake pan and press down firmly using your clean hands.

5. Refrigerate this raw brownie recipe for a couple of hours. You do not have to refrigerate it, but it is much easier to slice when chilled. By the way, this is actually a raw brownie recipe that keeps its shape! So it can be good for serving to non-raw fooders because the presentation of this raw brownie recipe is good when chilled.

6. Store this raw brownie recipe in the refrigerator if it lasts that long!

PS: For an even more delightful brownie, serve it with this easy, instant raw chocolate icing.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

Raw brownie recipe -- finally, a raw brownie recipe that tastes like REAL BROWNIES!

I am quite surprised and amazed at how the texture of this raw brownie recipe resembles real brownies--especially after this raw brownie recipe is refrigerated for about an hour or even longer.

My husband thinks this raw brownie recipe needs chocolate icing, but I disagree. I think it's perfect on its own! (But it is true, everything is better with raw chocolate icing on it.)

You can also use this raw brownie recipe as a pie crust or as very chocolately raw truffles.

Good luck trying to keep this raw brownie recipe around for longer than 24 hours. This vegan recipe would be good for about six small servings. Feel free to double the recipe if you want more or if you want to make it last longer. (I usually double it.)

Without further ado, here's my favorite uber-delicious and simple raw brownie recipe.

Did I overlook it, or do you not include nutritional data? These look fabulous.

The Rawtarian's picture

Nope, I do not include nut. data :)

made this today. seriously delicious! only, i had to add a little bit of water... it was too dry! any idea why? anyway, it is delicious. made some raw chocolate icing too! yummm!

The Rawtarian's picture

Sometimes it can be too dry if your nuts are dry, if your coconut is really dried out or if you don't process enough. If that happens you could add a bit of water as you did or add a very small amount of coconut oil if you have it. Glad you enjoyed the raw choco icing! Thanks for your feedback Marily.

Thank you for this recipe! I made these for my boyfriend and he thought that these brownies were made of real chocolate! Sooooooooooo delicious!

The Rawtarian's picture

Success! Nice job Maggie :)

I am in a moms group and we are having a recipe club on Friday with the theme of "chocolate" I am going to make these, they sound delicious! Thanks so much for the recipe.

The Rawtarian's picture

Awesome! Did you make them and what did your moms' group think, I wonder?

Laura-Jane,
I must say that I am impressed. I made some brownies last night and my wife and 3 & 6 your old sons just loved them. Thanks. I just love BBQ. Do you have or can you work on a substitute for my BBQ meals. I would eat BBQ meat 24/7 if I could.
Again thanks for the great brownies,
-Todd

The Rawtarian's picture

My pleasure Todd.

I will see what I can do for a BBQ flavor! :)

Oh wow! Just made these again. I thought I had enough to last me a few days... my teenage boys - who really don't like all my 'weird' food' - ate the whole batch. So I just made another batch, and realized I had ran out of honey. I substituted maple syrup... it taste like those little chocolates you can get at Valentine's or whenever really - the Russell Stover stuff... so good. I bet it will be even better if I can manage to let it sit.

The Rawtarian's picture

Success = teenage boys gobble them up :)

I served these up for all my vegan friends at my 2 year old daughter's birthday party last Saturday. They were such a big hit!!! I almost felt guilty taking all the compliments because it's your recipe :) I shared with them your website. Thank you!

The Rawtarian's picture

NO WAY!!!! SHE OR HE WHO MAKES IN KITCHEN GETS TO TAKE ALL THE CREDIT!!!! :)))

Thank you for posting this! It curbs my sweet tooth so quickly. My whole family loves them and I took them to a girls night as "brownie balls" and they were gone very quickly.

The Rawtarian's picture

Love it Janice! :))

Hello! Just wanted to tell you that I just whipped up a batch of these brownies and they are awesome! I'm not a raw food person but I do like to eat healthy and I love to cook. These surprised me in a good way, my husband even liked them. Ran across your podcast and I am definitely curious about this raw food lifestyle. Thanks.

The Rawtarian's picture

Awesome! Welcome Sarah. Raw food is fun to make even as a novelty - especially raw desserts, like this raw cheesecake made from cashews or even green smoothies in the morning as a great way to start your day. :)

Help! What can I use to thicken up my brownies? I added too much water...Oops..( my FP was labouring and I thought I was going to burn out the motor) I thought of coconut, but I'd rather use something else. It's the consistency of a really thick icing.. Thanks!

The Rawtarian's picture

Sorry, I am a bit late in responding :(

Hmm, first rule - don't do that! Lol But I know how it is. Hindsight is 20/20.

If I had very watery brownies I would (1) dehydrate them ; OR (2 ) add some ground chia seeds (they will absorb water); OR perhaps add some dried coconut or ground flax, but #1 or #2 would be better solutions

Thanks for the response..great suggestions:) Well, they ended up being more like a creamy fudge rather than brownies, which was ok, but today I want brownies so I'm gonna follow your exact recipe except I will use brown rice syrup as I do not use honey or agave.. Wish me luck! ;)

The Rawtarian's picture

Luck!!!

Ok, this is my official go-to brownie recipe.. I just made my third batch thinking that I would take them to work to share...mmm,now I'm not sure... ;-)

Looking forward to trying more of your recipes!

The Rawtarian's picture

Pardon me? Sharing? What's that? And why on earth would you want to do that?

:P

Lol, good point!...I shall keep them all for myself! Another question though, are we able to freeze these brownies?

The Rawtarian's picture

I have never done it myself. If you do I would chop them into squares first, then freeze in smaller batches in small ziploc bags - easier to defrost individually that way.

Of course, you will want to cool/refrigerate them before attempting to cut

Omg! These brownies are sooo heavenly! I'm not sure I will be baking my brownies again after finding this recipe. Thanks!

These are amazing!!! Question though - what would you recommend in terms of measurements to make a one portion version? I ask because i ate the entire batch of this in the last 24 hours... and if you have already figured out the measurements I wont fiddle to get there.

The Rawtarian's picture

Hmm. I don't tend to make 1 portion versions because they often don't blend well --especially in the blender - if you don't have much in the vitamix it won't mix properly.

However, if you figure it out please come back and share with the group. Merci beaucoup!

These brownies are to freakin die for! Thank you so much for this recipe and for all your others. I haven't been disappointed with any of them.
Question: Have you ever made the brownies in your Vitamix?

Thank you again,
Karen P.

The Rawtarian's picture

No, don't do it in the Vitamix!! Disaster waiting to happen. (trust me) will get all stuck and messy and won't blend properly

:)

(But yes, make the ICING in a VM)

I hate dates!!! can i use prunes or something else here I see a lot of raw recipes use dates!! YUKK

The Rawtarian's picture

Jacqui can I challenge you on this?? Do you hate the "taste" of dates?? This recipe doesn't taste like dates. Kind of like how if you hate the taste of flour but stil SADl cookies taste good, ya?

:)

You could sub raisins instead.

Hi Rawtarian,
I've enjoyed your podcasts so far - must say it was this recipe that got me interested in raw. What do you think about making this with a blender. I've asked for a food processor for my birthday, but its next month.
Yours,
Jess

The Rawtarian's picture

Nope, not gonna work in blender. (trust me)

This isn't chocolatey, but it is yummy and works in a blender: http://www.therawtarian.com/raw-strawberry-milk-recipe

Hope you get a FP for your bday! :) If not, you can get one at a big-box store for around $50

I made these for a Raw potluck and everyone was going back for seconds! The chocolate icing was divine!

The Rawtarian's picture

Awesome Carolina :)

Great recipe. I substituted carob for cacao. Getting ready to make another batch for a brownie party at work. Glad I found your site.

The Rawtarian's picture

Glad to have you here Danielle :)

Can you use dried dates for this or no?

The Rawtarian's picture

Sure - you just might have to let them process a bit longer

I made these this afternoon following the recipe to the letter. It is still chilling in the fridge, but I swiped a fingerful of it and it is DE-LICIOUS! It literally only took me about 5 minutes to make (after having all the ingredients out and lined up). Easy cheesy, as I like to say. Thanks for a great recipe. I have a cousin who is a raw foodist who turned me on to your site - recipes like this will make me a convert in no time! :^) Don't have a Vitamix though - just a food processor and a regular blender. Looking forward to making some more of your recipes.

OH MY GOODNESS! WHAT?? These were amazing! So amazing I just made some more (giggle). I did cheat and add a few Vegan Choc. Chips. YUMMMMM!!!!! Up next..CAKE!

The Rawtarian's picture

Lol I told ya!!

This may be a silly question but - do you need to line the pan with anything? Will they come out easily? I plan on making them tonight...:)

The Rawtarian's picture

No, you do not need to line the pan with anything.

If you refrigerate for at least an hour after making they will come out easily when cutting

I made these again (twice in 1 week) on the weekend for after dinner treat for Easter/Passover and my brother and best friend, who can't figure out why I'm trying out raw foods, ate almost THE WHOLE THING. I was lucky to have 2 pieces left! A definite winner recipe. I bought chia seeds this weekend, so next I'm trying one of your chia puddings... although I could eat these brownies all the time...

The Rawtarian's picture

Lol - why did you share them you crazy fool???

HAHA, good question! What was I thinking?

The Rawtarian's picture

I know! hehe :)
