1 cup of cashews (soaked and rinsed)
1/2 cup of water
1/4 cup of lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon celtic sea salt
Directions
Directions to make this raw sour cream recipe:
1. If you are wise and patient, soak your cashews first and then rinse them before blending. If you are impatient and have a high-speed blender, just throw dry cashews in your blender.
2. Add all ingredients, including cashews, into your blender.
3. Blend until smooth.
4. Transfer to a bowl and then chill in fridge for at least 2 hours.
5. Enjoy on raw vegan tacos or as a dip!
The Rawtarian's Thoughts
Raw sour cream recipe - Yet another simple cashew-based recipe that whips up quickly in the blender and will tingle your taste-buds!
Big thanks to Ashlyn for sending this recipe my way. It's totally my style (simple, quick and delicious) and a great excuse to make this raw vegan taco meat recipe, which I hadn't had for ages. Because to me tacos and sour cream go hand in hand, don't you think!
This is super quick to prepare. Best made in a high-speed blender, of course.
What is your favorite way to use raw sour cream at home?

Where is the sour cream ingredient in this Raw Sour Cream Recipe?

Hi Jodi,
All of my recipes are raw and vegan (dairy-free) so there is no sour cream in this recipe.
The purpose of this recipe is to create a vegan, dairy-free recipe that resembles sour cream without actually using sour cream :)

This looks very interesting. Could you please explain the taste and texture of this? Is it really thick and creamy? Does it taste nutty?

Does it taste nutty? Nope
Thick and creamy? Yep
Provided that you have a good blender, like a Vitamix

The consistency was exactly like sour cream, the only thing was it tasted like ranch to me. I made it for beans and ended up having to use it as a vegetable dip. Maybe the onion powder was too much. Any suggestions?

I do agree that cutting out onion powder might make it more sour creamy

I am not able to eat cashews (sesame seeds or peanuts) and I have noticed there are a lot of recipes that call for cashews. Do you know of any substitutes for cashews? I love your site and the great info you share. I find that your recipes are the only ones I look for when I am searching for something good to eat. I am new to raw and you have been so helpful! I originally thought I could not be 100% raw but after hearing what you have to say I think it may be do-able!

Can you eat macadamia nuts? That might work as good substitute for cashews - soak and rinse them first though

It is sooo good! I used it on raw tacos and it tasted just like sour cream. After reading the comments I decided to leave out the onion powder. I thought it tasted great and so did my husband!

I always loved a taco dip that my mother in law made....so I made homemade taco seasoning with dried seasonings and added it to the sour cream. Having it tomorrow. Can't wait to try it!

Hi Susan if you choose to soak 2 hours should do it - then rinse and pat dry before using

Hi,
I just found your site and I love it! I am new to raw eating and this site gives me high hopes of maintaining this lifestyle. I don't have a Vitamix I have a Oyster blender but its pretty sharp. Do you think the sour cream will still come out creamy?

Hi Dawn, it won't come out quite as smooth. But to help make it smoother, try soaking your cashews in warm water for at least three hours before using. Drain and rinse. Then pat dry with tea towel. This will soften them and make it smoother to blend

That was delicious. I threw mine in the freezer to quicken up the 2 hour wait and it was great. Will report tomorrow on how it does overnight. I seriously never thought it was going to be thick like sour cream but it was perfect.
