1 cup pecans (you can use walnuts in a pinch, but pecans are much better!)

1 cup dates

5 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder

4 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut

2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Directions

1. Place pecans alone in your food processor and process until the pecans become small and crumbly.

2. Add dates to the raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.

3. Add the remaining ingredients to this raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture turns a lovely dark chocolatey brown. Stop processing before it gets too buttery. (There should still be air between the small bits so that you will be able to press them down into your brownie pan.)

4. Dump the mixture into a brownie dish or small cake pan and press down firmly using your clean hands.

5. Refrigerate this raw brownie recipe for a couple of hours. You do not have to refrigerate it, but it is much easier to slice when chilled. By the way, this is actually a raw brownie recipe that keeps its shape! So it can be good for serving to non-raw fooders because the presentation of this raw brownie recipe is good when chilled.

6. Store this raw brownie recipe in the refrigerator if it lasts that long!

PS: For an even more delightful brownie, serve it with this easy, instant raw chocolate icing.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

Raw brownie recipe -- finally, a raw brownie recipe that tastes like REAL BROWNIES!

I am quite surprised and amazed at how the texture of this raw brownie recipe resembles real brownies--especially after this raw brownie recipe is refrigerated for about an hour or even longer.

My husband thinks this raw brownie recipe needs chocolate icing, but I disagree. I think it's perfect on its own! (But it is true, everything is better with raw chocolate icing on it.)

You can also use this raw brownie recipe as a pie crust or as very chocolately raw truffles.

Good luck trying to keep this raw brownie recipe around for longer than 24 hours. This vegan recipe would be good for about six small servings. Feel free to double the recipe if you want more or if you want to make it last longer. (I usually double it.)

Without further ado, here's my favorite uber-delicious and simple raw brownie recipe.

I know! hehe :)

Wow! My collegue and I just started eating raw a few weeks ago, and it's such a delightful thing!
FOund your page and tried your lemon bars first. Delicious. Then I made these. Only I put in about half an orange worth of orange zest and let me tell you, it is probably the best thing I have EVER eaten my whole life.
Sub'd some of the dates for prunes also, since I kinda like 'em. :)

Thanks for all these great recipes.

The Rawtarian's picture

I love that you mentioned prunes because I am on a MAJOR prune kick right now. To me and my raw tastebuds they taste like grape candy to me.

That whole orange zest addition to the lemon bars sounds AWESOME. might have to try that myself.

Nooo, you misunderstood. I put the orange zest in THESE. The brownies. I loooove chocolate with orange flavor. Actually, I'm not a chocolate person (I know, how strange is that being woman and all) but with orange flavor - GIVE IT TO ME! :D
Oh, and I did the cheesecake too the other day. Delicious too!
Again, thanks for the recipes!

Thanks for clarifying, Karolina.I think my brain just really wanted to make the lemon bars with orange instead lol

Orange in the brownies sounds good too.I love orange flavor!  What's with you not being a choco woman??

Made these today. My husband and I want to eat the entire batch! Delicious!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We're just starting on our raw food journey, and after a couple of weeks I was running out of inspiration - and then I found your website, what a revelation! Have just made the brownies with the chocolate icing - and wow, they're absolutely delicious! Better than the traditional cooked ones by far. They remind me a bit of tiffin / chocolate biscuit cake, so I might try them with some raisins next time.

The Rawtarian's picture

Glad to have you here Carla :)

Never heard of tiffin / choco biscuit cake. Sounds interesting. You mean adding chunky raisins and not blending them up?

Whoa, this brownie is amazing. I am really surprised, since I do not like dates. At all!! But because of all the positive comments, I got too curious and decided, I needed to try it out - and OMG this tastes really delicat and wonderfully chocolaty and not like dates at all. Dates are my new friend! And this brownie is my new best friend! Hurra :)
And thank you!
Best,
Nanna (Denmark)

Btw, I topped it with an alternative frosting, since I didn't have any coconot oil, made of avocado, agave, cocoa, vanilla and cinnamon. If you haven´t tried that one, you really should! Yummi.

Dates have a bad reputation because lots of people grew up only eating those date bars. Not very exciting and way too datey.

Dates just act as a sweetener. That is all. Glad you saw past your date-ugginess and went for it.  :) Let a lesson be learned to us all!

<3

Just another comment.. I saw you wrote to another, that theese couldn't be made with a blender.. I don't have a food processor, so I made them with a blender stick (Is that a word in english? Hope you know what I mean..).. And they turned out just fantastic - the kpb was a bit hard to my poor blender, but it survived, though..
*Nanna
PS: I made this to bring to my study group. But they tasted so damned good, that I couldn't bare the thought of sharing them, so I ended up eating the whole batch alone :P

When will you people ever learn. Sharing is BAD.

:)

I absolutely love this recipe. I can't believe the brownies taste like the SAD brownies I grew up eating. Yum!

The Rawtarian's picture

Glad to have you here Kathy :)

I ended up using walnuts, and it is SO delicious, so I'm curious as to how much better it will be with pecans. This recipe is worthy of endless praise. LOVE that it satisfies my chocolate craving in a much healthier way!

Thanks!

My pleasure Cher :)

Just finished making the brownies and they taste amazing before even putting them in the fridge. Made the banana bread as well last night and it is way to good. My friend who is also a raw vegan is going to love what I bring her for her birthday.

Food is a lovely bday surprise - especially raw sweets :)

Omg! These are soooooo awesome! This is by far the best raw version of anything I've ever made. Thanks so much for all your hard work and for sharing with us! Xx

:)

Can you sub the coconut for anything?

The Rawtarian's picture

coconut is recommended. But it you don't have coconut you could try hempseed hearts.

I made some adjustments, since I live in Haiti and have access to different things. I used raw chocolate (cacao beans that are smashed into chocolate) and young coconut meat, rather than flaked coconut. Delicious!!!! Who would have thought raw could be so adventurous and taste so yummy? Thanks so much for sharing your recipes!

Raw foods are sooooooo delicious! Those look amazing! =)

The Rawtarian's picture

Hi Renee!

Sounds like some awesome substitutions. And if you have young thai coconut meat instead of dry - even better!

I've just made them and they are fabulous!!!

Would it be ok to use prunes instead of dates? This will be my first dessert raw recipe to attempt, and I'm super excited about it ... but I don't want to mess it up! I was curious if there was a taste/texture difference between the two anyways, as I always seem to think they are the same thing for some reason!? Oh, and I do plan on topping with banana ice cream, I hear that's the best!

The Rawtarian's picture

I haven't tried this recipe with prunes but I think it should turn out fine. If you make it please come back and let me know how it turned out. Thank you

Literally - the BEST raw recipe I've ever tried !! And the best brownies ever, cooked or not!! and it was easy, fast and delicious!! THANK YOU...

Just made the brownies, they are genius. Better than traditional because just sweet enough!

Will add some of my carbon-free, organic, alkaline, ground coffee beans from our local naturopath next time!! Thanks so much for recipe!

Is there a way you can substitute the pecans and coconut? I cant eat any type of other nut either.. only seeds

The Rawtarian's picture

instead of pecans you can try sunflower seeds (but it will be better with pecans). for the coconut try hemp seeds instead

The Rawtarian's picture

PS: hemp seeds = hemp hearts

Thanks!

would hazelnuts work?

The Rawtarian's picture

yes you can use hazelnuts instead but it might be a bit dry - pecans or walnuts are best

I came across your podcast and then website the other day, and am loving all the information! I went raw vegan for a couple months last summer, but bounce around between meal plans from day to day and have been off track for awhile. I just made these brownies with the icing and HOLY $*^&!!!! SO DELICIOUS!! They would definitely hold their own next to any dessert out there, raw or not!!

The Rawtarian's picture

:)

Happy to have you here Janelle

This recipe is amazing! I have never commented on a website before on recipes I have used but this recipe is so good I must! I dont know how I will keep myself from eating the whole thing!! This is my third day of eating raw and its quite a challenge, but thanks to these brownies and your recipes I think I can make this a permanent lifestyle change! Thank-you!!

The Rawtarian's picture

Yay! Sounds like you have seen the light Andrea

Oh my goodness, these are just divine! I spread them out to make a thinner layer so I had thin, bite size little squares to snack on during the day. Great recipe, thank you!

The Rawtarian's picture

yum

I was craving something sweet today and I came across this recipe. Delicious! I made a few changes though, I used mixed nuts and I used half dates and half prunes; and since I don't have a high speed blender and mine 'struggled' to blend all of those ingredients I added a few tablespoon of coffee left over from breakfast! Too yummy! I cannot put the spoon down, help!

Oh. My. Gosh. These brownies are, hands down, completely and absolutely THE BEST raw brownies ever made! I do not know how I am going to keep my hands off the whole pan. I only now just got done with the recipe and they are awaiting my attack in the fridge. Thank you SO much for sharing this beautiful recipe!

I made these last night as my very first attempt at raw "baking!" They're wonderful! They turned out more the texture of fudge than brownies, but I think I may have simply processed them a little too long.

My husband's comment was, "Well. I wouldn't call them brownies, but they're good." ;)

I was delighted by how complex the flavor is. Real brownies, and most similar sweet desserts, are sort of... monotone in comparison. I'm definitely inspired to keep exploring raw foods.

I made these today! I used macadamias instead of pecans and used organic rice puffs replacing the coconut because I couldn't get a fresh organic coconut.. They were very delicious!! My husband was pleasantly surprised :)

This is the one raw and/or vegan recipe that my husband will actually eat (I mean DEVOUR). Tonight I added fresh cherries from the local farmers market. It was an amazing addition!

P.S. I love ALL of your recipes - thank you for sharing.
