Directions

  • 1. Shred your apple using a hand shredder. (If making only one or two bowls, I use a mandoline slicer with the shredder attachment. If making this for many people, probably easiest to shred in a food processor.)
  • 2. Place shredded apple in bowl, and top with remaining ingredients.
  • 3. Top with the cashew milk (best) or alternatively use water.
  • 4. Stir vigourously. Within a couple of minutes the chia seeds and shredded coconut will absorb the liqid and you will have a delicious, ready to eat raw breakfast cereal.
  • Check out my video below to see me make this in person :)

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

This recipe is very similar to my raw breakfast cereal recipe; however, there are a couple of key differences - especially the addition of the coconut and the shredding of the apple.

In fact, it is the shredded apple that makes up the recipe - and gives it a stellar texture!

This recipe is for one person.

Fast, easy, filling and so yummy. I'm new to eating raw and really enjoying this site. I saw the idea of using dried cranberries (which I like much more than raisins). Going to give it a try in the morning. Thanks for taking the guess work out of trying raw.

I didn't think this would be good, but I tried it anyway. I liked it. I made mine with dried cranberries because I'm not into raisins that much and I don't do nut milks too much since my daughter is allergic to peanuts and nuts (trying to get her to eat better and detox). Anyway, I had banana milk. It was really good. I put too much milk but it was still good. Thanks so much.

Very yummy breakfast and easy to make. For my cashew milk, i use blueberries, cashew, vanilla, a pinch of salt, dates, water and unsweetened cocunut milk and put all in the blender. Then pour over the bowl with all the ingredients for breakfast. It is delicious! Love this app coz it is convenient!

What is the best type of apple to use? I used a Gala apple & when I shredded it, I got apple sauce. The end result was really good but because of the texture of the apple, it wasn't very filling

Hi Susan, How did you shred it?? Green apples (Granny Smith) tend to work the best, but I just use whichever apple I have in the house at the time :)

I just found your website yesterday, and I am so happy that you have many recipes that I don't have to use a dehydrator. This recipe is exactly what I was looking for in a breakfast cereal. I hope you don't mind that I tweaked it a little bit. I added 2 T coconut, 3 T. chia seeds, 3 T. buckwheat groats, 1 T. cinnamon......and coconut/almond milk. Used a red apple b/c that is all I had. Let it soak overnight in refrigerator. This morning stirred in sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Had to omit the raisins b/c I can't have too much sugar. Well I was in heaven this morning, so yummy!!! I need something already prepared in the morning before I go to work. Now it looks like I have a few more breakfast meals, and I can even eat it as dessert too! Thank you, I can't wait to try more of your recipes!!! :-)

Dude!! This is a genius idea with the cardamom!!!! I had an Indian dessert like that once, and I hadn't thought about it until this moment really. It was creamy with pistachios and some kind of spice, which was probably cardamom. I gotta try this. Thank you for the inspiration! It is hitting me the right way at this exact moment, also I think I might have to do a similar thing with my sweet chia pudding recipe (cashew based creamy goodness)

1 shredded apple; 1 tablespoon flax seeds; 1 tablespoon raisins; I tablespoon pumpkin seeds; 1 tablespoon almonds; Sprinkle of cinnamon & 1/3 cup soy milk (This is all I had on hand :-( )

This will become a staple as it it delicious and quick to make. I will try again with homemade almond milk.

This is my first trial with chia seeds. Been wanting to make it since I first saw your video about it. This is Mucho D-licsh and I even used water; should be amazing with nut mylk! So much tastier, way more nutritious and kinder on the tummy than processed cereals. Its that holiday time of year so I made mine with shredded pear and dried cranberries (which weren't raw but one of these days I will dry my own). I honestly can't taste the cranberries but the pear is probably a good way to change it up every once in a while. You had mentioned some emotional discomfort with sipping on breakfast smoothies this time of year - I don't blame you. Maybe you could have some of your raw breakfast bowl with heated (but no hotter than 105) mylk.

This morning as the kids are still asleep I decided to make this apple
breakfast instead of waking everybody up with my blender. I have been sitting
on this recipe for weeks now and I don't know why I waited so long to make
it. It took me less time to assemble it than making my smoothie. It seems too
me that it was going to take good, but at the first taste I was wowed, it
tasted way way better than I thought! I think this is a much better
alternative for breakfast when you are traveling, pack all the dry
ingredients, a shredder and I guess if you can't store milk in your hotel
room, use water or maybe coconut water or if you are not a 100% raw buy some
small 8oz almond milk containers at whole foods. Thank you very much, it was
no fuss, no mess and absolutely delicious!

Hi,
If you don't sprout your almonds and buckwheat groats, then you're missing out on most of the nutritional value. 'Raw' isn't about 'uncooked', it's about 'living'.
Both the almonds and the buckwheat contain enzyme inhibitors, which make it harder for us to digest them. Simply soaking overnight and discarding the soak water is enough to remove these inhibitors and turn them into a living superfood.
Sprout the buckwheat groats for a day or two and you're taking things to the next level.
Raw is about enzymes, enzymes, enzymes :-)
And it's easy!
http://www.rawfoodjourney.co.uk/raw-living-food-ingredients/raw-nuts-seeds-and-grains/how-to-sprout-raw-almonds/
Thanks for the great breakfast recipe.
xx Clare

Where are the Nutrition facts, calories in the foods prepare or do you not count them in a raw diet?

I do not have the time to calculate calories etc for each recipe that I post online. In my experience, most raw foodists do not count calories nor do they restrict food intake in terms of portion sizes. However it is important to eat a balanced diet and lots of greens, as well as to ensure adequate protein intake and to supplement with B12 because you cannot get B12 on a purely raw vegan diet.

Awesome Dave. Sounds like you are on a roll! You might like my ranch dressing on your salads - you will love the cheesecake. And the lemon bars are a surprise hit! I was quite shocked that so many people love them - I think it's because they are so easy :)

Thank you Laura for this recipe! I love it, especially with the buckwheat grouts!!! Very comforting breakfast. I did it few times already and I keep loving it. Today, I had no nut milk, so I added coconut milk and it was still delicious!

I am so glad you are enjoying it Rosemary. Coconut milk would be divine! Do you put any other chunky goodies on top? Like different dried fruits etc?

Just made this, but left the apple chopped and used some of the almond milk that we made and it was delicious! Definitely making again.

Hey, I've had trouble finding the buckwheat grouts, is this different to buckwheat kernels? I'm in Australia and couldn't find it in the health food store. Is it possible to use the kernels?

Not sure whether they are called kernels but they look like this!

hello. I noticed you did not say to sprout the buckwheat groats to make them living before you use them in the cereal. If you don't already do this, I recommend sprouting them first and then dehydrating them to make them crispy again! They can store a long time in the cupboard once dried.

I highly recommend. I just finished a 10 day juice fast. I feel great. I wasn't hungry and it really helped me break the snacking habit. (and I lost 8 pounds). I have continued with a juice a day. Check out Jason Vale. http://www.juicemaster.com/us/ He did a world wide juice fast with daily encouraging videos in January. He is going to do that again at the beginning of April.

This looks very interesting Laura. Do you recommend a specific type of apple that works well in this recipe? I prefer crisp apples. Will they work in this recipe?

I also prefer crisp apples. I generally use Gala apples (my favourite) or I also like Granny Smiths.

Yes, crisp apples are best in this recipe.
