1 1/4 cup steel cut oats (or better yet, use oat groats)
1 1/2 cups water
1 chopped apple
1 tablespoon raisins
Directions
1. The night before, throw the water, raisins and then the steel cut oats into your blender. Let them sit overnight.
2. In the morning, start your blender. While the water and oats are blending, chop the apple and then add it to the blender, too.
3. Continue blending until the oatmeal is a nice, smooth texture.
4. Eat! I love to top this oatmeal with more whole raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This recipe for raw oatmeal makes for a very filling breakfast.
PS: It has recently come to my attention that the rawness of steel cut oats and even oat groats in this recipe is disputed! Check out this discussion on the raw nature of oats.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts
In the morning, my raw food breakfast is almost always either fresh fruit, a green smoothie, or--my favourite--raw oatmeal.
This recipe does take a bit of preparation because it has to be soaked overnight, but, with only a few ingredients, it's so easy!
If you click on this photo you can see the high-resolution version, which shows you how smooth and creamy this oatmeal is.
All this without "cooking" anything.
Of course, like any good oatmeal, top this recipe with fruit or whatever suits your fancy. Raw oatmeal for two!

It's a nice change, that's for sure. For when you get sick of green smoothies for breaky!

Instead of having to soak the oats, and to avoid the whole steel oat/oat groats raw debate, I used raw sprouted oats. Didn't need to soak them just put the sprouted oats in the blender with a about a cup of soaking water from dates (leftover from a raw bread recipe I made yesterday). Came out delish! Thanks for the idea! :)

Do the oat groats contain wheat ?

Labb, I am not certain whether the oat groats contain wheat/gluten. To be on the safe side, use buckwheat groats instead - "buckwheat groats" are definitely gluten free

I use rolled oats and although I prefer apples in it, I'll use any other non citrus fruit on hand. Also I haven't been soaking any of the ingredients, and the oatmeal is wonderful.

Hi Natalie, yes, this recipe would work with buckwheat groats, but you should definitely soak them first. (you can use the same quantities)

I just made this today. I added a little raw almond milk, date paste, apple and cinnamon and blended it together. I will add sliced banana when I get ready to eat it at work...seems very filling and a great way to eat oats. Thank you!

That sounds like a LOT of oats. Isn't one serving of steel cut oats usually about 1/4 cup? I'm new to raw food so not sure about serving sizes and what not : )

This is really good! The texture is so appealing. I *hate* the gummy texture of cooked oats, and wanted a way to eat oats other than in sweets. This is it!

Try this...if something gets you up a couple hours before regular time, add walnuts on the top of the soaked oats, and just enough water to cover the walnuts. Go back to bed. Get up and proceed as previous. Wow is that good!

I had this for breakfast yesterday and I really liked it! I used the oat groats I had & we happened to have both raisins & apples. I can't wait to try different fruits & add different nuts to it. This will definitely be a breakfast staple for me. Thank you so much! I'm very anxious to try the brownies too. I work with an older gentleman who likes to eat very healthy. I told him about the brownies & he gave me $20 to go buy the ingredients to make some for him & and wife and for me & my family. :)

A blender isn't always an option (I spend part of the year living on a sailboat where space and battery power are precious). Plus a blender is just one more thing to clean.
So I use this very simple method in the evening: mix oats with some crushed walnuts, mixed berries, raisins, chopped apple, etc. into a big coffee mug, add soy milk till it reaches the level of the dry ingredients, and go to bed.
In the morning, get a spoon and eat.
Washing up involves a mug and a spoon.

Hi George, what kind of oats do you use? Could be really nice with steel cut oats and almond or another nut milk for a raw alternative. Nice tip! And sailboat living sounds fun.

Steel-cut organic from a local mill with plain, unsweetened soy since it's usually easy to source in smaller communities where more 'exotic' options aren't available.
Living aboard is fun when the weather's good.

Excuse my ignorance but what are steel cut oats? Can they be bought in the supermarket or just in health food stores? Are you based in Australia?

Hi Rachael, I live in Canada. Here they can be purchased in the grocery store (or at health food stores) near the oatmeal and cooked cereal area.
Can any other Australians weigh in on this? Do they have a different name in Australia?

Hi Gna, great question! I have a very boring but very practical salad recipe that takes NO time to prep as long as u have access to a kitchen at your workplace - I think I've called it "raw salad for lunch" or something like that (browse salad category in the app) - basically, it's carrot, avocado, tomato. The avocado acts like the dressing, and it's surprisingly good!

I had this morning, very creamy and yummy. I am surprised how filling it is. I struggled a bit with it not being hot, (rainy winter morning in New Zealand) but I still really enjoyed it. I think this will become a regular breakfast as I embark on this journey to increase my raw food intake. Thanks so much!
