Crust ingredients:

1 cup cashews

1 cup dried, unsweetened coconut

1/2 cup dates

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Banana filling:

2 medium bananas

3/4 cup cashews

1/4 cup honey

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/3 cup coconut oil

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

Directions

1. Place all crust ingredients in the food processor. Process until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.

2. Dump crust mixture into your pie crust/glass dish. Press the crust down firmly in your dish with your hands. (Crust is now done.)

3. Add all banana filling ingredients to your blender. Blend until creamy and smooth.

4. Pour banana cream filling onto the crust. Smooth out with the back of a spoon.

8. Cover and throw in freezer. Ideally should be frozen overnight to firm up so that it can be sliced perfectly.

9. This raw banana cream pie recipe should always be kept in the freezer. (It'll get soggy if in the fridge.)

I was inspired to create this raw banana cream pie recipe for Christmas this year. It is soo smooth, so "banana creamy" and just absolutely perfect. (Can you tell I am on a freezer pie kick??)

It's actually pretty fast to make - just a quick food process and an easy blend. Even a crappy blender should be able to handle this raw recipe.

Using perfectly ripe bananas will give you that divine banana cream pie taste. (You want to use perfectly ripe bananas - not too green and not too brown.)

If you don't do honey you can do agave nectar or maple syrup instead of the honey. Use the same measurements.

Hi, I was wondering if I could substitte cashews for another nut. Im very sensitive to cashews. Thank You Tammy

I always sustitute cashews with a mixture of almonds and macadamias (or walnuts), the crispy side is contributed by the almond and the soft more creamy texture by macadamias or walnuts.

Hi Aly,  a great suggestion! In the crust you can substitute a wide variety of nuts (macadamia nuts, pecans, almonds or walnuts or a combo thereof) for cashews. In the banana cream filling part I would sub with macadamias only.

I actually used a combo of sunflower, hemp, cashews, and macadamia nuts. Since we were severely low on food at the time. It came out perfectly. I especially liked using the hemp seeds for that extra nutritional boost. I am going to make my own version of this recipe again using a combo of cashews and hemp seeds.

I substituted 1/4 cup of almonds and 3/4 cup of walnuts for the 1 cup of cashews it asked for in the crust. I also added about 1/4 -1/2 cup more of dates, sprinkled a little cinnamon (about 1/4 tsp) and added approx 1/4 cup of coconut oil as well to make the crust stick together a little bit better for me. It was divine! You could have formed the crust into cookie balls and eaten them plain that way! I wasn't too much of a fan of the banana mixture on top. Next time I'll probably use just some frozen blueberries or strawberries and plain raw yogurt and make a mixture out of that. However, my family loved it. They inhaled the entire pie in 20 min! They asked if it could be their Sabbath dessert every week. That's saying a lot. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipe!

Hi Cath, in general, it can be difficult to substitute - although you may find my podcast on nut substitutions helpful: http://www.therawtarian.com/rfp05-nut-substitutions

The best advice I can give is to avoid "substituting" instead, look for recipes that do not contain nuts... This is because things are never quite right once you start to tweak recipes :)

In general, cashews are used to provide a "creamy" texture.

In this recipe, cashews in the base (crust) could be substituted for sesame seeds if those are acceptable to you,

For the actual cream pie, you need those cashews and no other nut/seed would do (other than macadamia, but I assume those are a no-go too). I would then look for a different banana cream pie filling recipe that doesn't use cashews, which shouldn't be too hard cause the "creaminess" can be fulfilled by bananas instead, since they are very creamy too

I haven't tried this recipe but I want to asap. I was wondering though do you eat it frozen and is it like an ice cream pie? or do you thaw it out? Just wondering. thx!

Denise, the best way to enjoy this recipe is to keep it frozen AT ALL times, then cut a frozen slice, leave the slice on the counter for 10 minutes and then eat. YUMMM

well this caused problems, made this last night took no time at all. as per the instructions let freeze overnight. did that, then I went to work at 07:00 in the morning. Of course the teenage son still sleeping i get home at 05:30 pm. wide variety of kids in the backyard, and what look like the pie dish was in the sink, I thought to my self no way they would have done that. Then he had the audacity to ask me that pie was great did you get a piece, I said the last i saw of the pie was it going in the freezer, now the plate is in the sink. I was told"well u need to make another one" good thing I do not own a gun

Hi John, OMG :( I feel your pain.

Well had to do a redue on this, however The Rawtarian left a very key ingredient, a big Bag of turnip greens, yes go to Costco get the biggest bag they have. You want the bag not the greens, surgically open the bag, do what ever with the greens, then put the pie in the plastic bag that says turnip greens, then grab one of the empty waffle boxes the your kids have left in the freezer( open side forward) and put it on top of the pie that is in the turnip green bag. Now you can leave for the day, week, month and you will always have this pie at the ready. without the threat of it be inhaled by the pack of those annoying things called teenagers.

Hiya, thanks for all these amazing recipes. I just wondered if I put the cashews in soaked or unsoaked? I'm new to raw food and most of the recipes I've seen call for soaked cashews when making something creamy. Sorry if this is a stupid question!

There are no stupid questions! In my recipes, you do not have to soak unless I specifically say to soak in the recipe.

In this recipe no soaking is required.

Thank you so much! I made this tonight and it is AMAZING! I used a mixture of walnuts, pecans and cashews in the crust, purely because they all have slightly different nutritional benefits and I wanted to get as much "goodness" in as I could. My only problem was converting cups to grams (I'm in the UK) but I think I might invest in some US cup measures because I intend to try all the recpies on your site.

ccaroline. I used my scale to covert the cups for you. 1 cup cashews=145g, 1 cup coconut=80 g, 1/2 cup dates=95g, 1/4 tsp salt = 1.75g, 3/4 cup cashews=109g, 1/4 cup honey=105g, 1/4 cup lemon juice = 68g, 1/3 cup coconut oil = 70g, 1 tsp vanilla = 5g, 1/8 tsp salt = 0.875g (pinch)

Do you think it would be possible to substitute some of the coconut oil for lecithin? I know it wouldn't set quite as firm but it would cut down on calories and saturated fat.

Made the Raw banana cream pie recipe last week. the cream came out yummy, however the crust didn't. It had a soapy taste to it. Do you think I should have soaked the raw cashews before using? Thanks

Interesting! I haven't really experienced a soapy taste. You could try soaking your cashews. You could also try using pecans for the crust instead of cashews

Thanks for getting back to me. My error...I had left the coconut flakes out. It was not in the fridge, so it spoiled. That's what gave it that "soapy" taste. Going to try it out again this week. Will let you know how it comes out. Thanks.
