terrible digestive issues

edited August 2011 in Health & Beauty

I’ve been living 100% raw for a long time (5 years, and on/off for a few before that, I’m 26 now) but I’ve also been living with an eating disorder for longer that was primarily set towards binging/overeating. I had managed to stay on a meal plan for six months, then I relapsed for a month, until I become incredibly, frighteningly ill one day with extreme pain in my lower right abdomen. I tried going to doctors, but they couldn’t find anything except that (of course) all my vitals showed me as being very healthy, and my catscan was clean; I took three days of antibiotics out of fear, because I really thought I was going to die. I’m not sure now if I injured a pelvic muscle while trying to lift heavy things or if this was some form of IBS, but having to eliminate from my digestive system gave me severe, extreme pain every single time it happened. At first I tried juicing, and pineapple juice helped a lot, until I could move to blended food, which I stayed on for a month. I stuck with the blended pineapple for awhile, before it started to turn against me very strongly and I had to give up citrus.

Now the pain is totally gone, and my appetite is somewhat back, so a few days ago I thought I should probably go back to solid food, but still simple meals, no fat. Unfortunately, I realized that something my body had been doing since the beginning of this was still happening – food comes out of my body about six hours after I eat it, looking very recognizable and as if it hasn’t changed at all since it left my mouth – sometimes it floats and seems coated in lots of mucus. So I’ve gone back to blended food, and I don’t know if it was because I ate a bunch of fresh (not dry) local seaweed Tuesday, but today and yesterday I’ve felt terrible weakness and fatigue, unbalance. I’ve started to drink less water (since my system apparently wasn’t comfortable moving food through on it’s own, it required me to drink tons and tons of water all day to avoid pain) and today I had bit of overt fats – some fresh coconut for the first time (I was having local spirulina which has fatty acids in all my smoothies, so I thought it was fine – I had been majorly binging on fat before this illness came.)

I really don’t know what is happening to my body, whether the illness is really over and now I’m detoxing a little or if this isn’t a large condition, if it isn’t in fact IBS and isn’t really gone. I understand that the years of overeating raw fats will have some consequences for my body – but this is becoming quite a drag. I’m about to try to make some veggiekraut from thinking perhaps the antibiotics killed my flora, though I had read that in two weeks the body is supposed to automatically repopulate itself. I'm also wondering if I should try to have more time between meals - I used to have 4 small meals a day, but then I cut it down to three, but there are still just 3 hours between my meals, and I'm wondering if I should try to make more time between them, though I'm always hungry when mealtime comes around.

I'm sorry I wrote so much, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any insights, advice, or support for me? I have no one I can talk to about any of this.

  • If I were you for two weeks, I would eat when hungry, avoid eating fats.... From 3 am till noon eat nothing but fruits in the blender or juiced... Afterward just veggie smoothies &/or salads and nothing after 8 or 10 pm... Be sure to eat the rainbow, as many different colors as possible... Nothing cooked... Then reevaluate your condition at the end of two weeks...

During the two weeks, I would also take a good probiotic, drink when thirsty and get plenty rest and exercise daily...

It would be my guess that you are detoxing, I know I had a ton of mucus stools for a long period of time... The lower right pain could have been ovarian, releasing an egg or just gas... It is gone now, which is good...

Hope you are feeling better about your condition soon!!!

ps, a good rule of thumb, don't take an antibiotic unless you have a fever over 101 degrees and then only for something major like Strep Throat or pneumonia...

Also, lots of fats can upset the gallbladder which is painful...

EDIT~ Remember this is what I would do for me, if I had your complaints and concerns ...

  • Yeah, it looks like I'm going to stay on thin blended foods for awhile; and I might get some probiotics, but for now I've made two batches of fermented veggiekraut that will be ready this week; I might get some methylcobalimin too, in case that was wiped by the stupid antibiotics. I didn't have a fever at all, but that is what they sent me home with from the ER, and I was very desperate, afraid. Drinking less water (one gallon instead of like two and a half) seems to be helping my digestion a bit. I really think it might just be one of my pelvic muscles (definitely not ovarian because I'm male) and it just needs a few more weeks to be able to help push more solid foods out of my system without pain. Thanks.
