fruits

I keep reading about people on raw eating tons of fruit.. I love fruit and eat only fruit everyday, for veggies I have mushroom, tomatoe and parsley. Ive been eating 6-8 pounds of grapes a day including mabey sometimes cherries. Will I gain weight by eating all those grapes, Im sort of confused . Is this too much or do I actually have to add in more different foods? I read that eating just fruit all day or whatever will make you gain weight, is this true. I dont want to gain:/

  • you should check out 30bananasaday.com or freelee or durian rider's videos on youtube...

  • What else are you eating besides grapes? Grapes are mostly water are you eating other foods with alot of salt/sodium? Sodium helps/causes us to retain water and water weighs alot.

Other than that if you weigh yourself everyday you shouldn't have a weight but a weight range of about 5 pounds or so since our bodies are always in constant flux.

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

Mushroom is a fungus; tomato is a fruit.

  • swayzeswayze Raw Newbie

That's a great point, spitfiredd. Many people, esp. women, get obsessed with weighing everyday and freak out when the number moves up even half a pound. This is completely normal!

sweet, the best way to find out if the amount you're eating will cause weight gain is observation. Continue eating that same amount, weigh yourself once per week, and note what happens.

Just remember that just because you gain weight does not mean that it is body fat. It could very well just be water or even muscle if you are strength training. A good idea is to invest in a body fat caliper or a scale that checks body fat %.

I have a ww scale (weight watchers), and you input your age, sex, height, fitness level.

Then after you weigh yourself , it will show your weight , bf%, water %, and Bone Density.

This is an easy way to keep track of bf%.

1 lbs of grapes equals about 300 cals.

You need to figure out your daily caloric needs:

    freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Try that one, there are lots on the web.

    Example:

If you maintenance is say 2500 / day, then you want to eat 250-500 less to lose weight.

So you would be shooting for 2000/day - 2250/day.

So 8bls of grapes would put you over @ 2400 cals.

However, 7 lbs + a large dark green leafy salad would be just about right.

  • Hi Sweet,

It sounds like you need a lot more variety in your diet! You should try to find seasonal, local foods. You cannot get all the nutrients you need from eating within a small number of foods.

Second, for health, you should probably be eating twice as many raw VEGETABLES - green leafy (kale is especially healthy), spinach, etc.. to the amount of fruit you eat. The problem with eating so many grapes is that it is going to raise your blood sugar level, and it can create hypogylcemia. I would absolutely recommend you cut your intake on fruits, and raise it with the greens.

With regard to weight; there is so much about losing/gaining weight that is totally overlooked by doctors and nutritionists and other "diet" specialists. Going on a "diet" immediately puts your body into stress. Stress raises your cortisol levels and can actually slow down your metabolism and make you put on belly fat. Yo Yo effect is created when you go on a diet. The best thing to do is make sure you are eating a BALANCED healthy combination of foods, and slowly you will find you don't want to eat fast, processed foods.

You can read more about how to lose weight in a healthy way on my website.

  • The thing is I would eat so much vegetables, but I cant eat them raw they cause gas ,stomach bloat. I could only eat them cooked, like cooked broccoli, spinach etc. Would it be a problem to include cooked veggies along eating fresh fruit?

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

Honestly, where do people come up with this nonsense???

"In adults and children older than 10 years, hypoglycemia is uncommon except as a side effect of diabetes treatment."

    http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/hypoglycemia/#what

Sweet are you diabetic or am i missing something here????

I have never heard of anybody becoming diabetic or hyperemic from eating fruit!!!

Also a side note about variety, i can make a diet out of 2 foods, and you let me know what I am missing:

    I could eat 30 bananas @ 100 calories / banana

This is nutrition breakdown and you can see 38.6g of protein.

    Look at the vitamin C!!!!

To get the other nutrients throughout the day you could eat 1 pound of raw spinach for example.

    Bananas

    Nutrition Facts

    Amounts per 3540g

    Calories 3150.6

    Calories From Fat 94.8

    % Daily Value*

    Total Fat 11.7g

    267%

    Protein 38.6g 51%

    Vitamin A 45% Vitamin C 513%

    Calcium 18% Iron 51

Now here is 1 pound of raw spinach (You can eat other vegetables, but this is just an example)

    Nutrition Facts

    Amounts per 450g

    Calories 103.5

    Calories From Fat 12.3

    29%

    Protein 12.9g 17%

    Vitamin A 844% Vitamin C 211%

    Calcium 45% Iron 68%

As you can see another 12.9g of protein but only 103 cals.

So vegetables are high in protein but low in cals.

In my example about with bananas and spinach, we are getting 51.5 grams of protein with only two ingredients.

Cheap to buy and can support a 3000 cal diet.

It has calcium and iron and all the nutrients necessary for survival.

Other then b12, which might have to be supplemented and vit D from the sun, and exercise, what is it missing????

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

Also somebody was recommending to reduce intake of fruit and "raise with greens".

Firstly , a vegetable/greens diet is impossible (almost impossible) because there are NOT enough calories in them to sustain a humane diet solely on them.

So if somebody cut their fruit intake in half and ate the same volume, but in vegetables/greens, they would be calorie deficient.

Eventually they will shrivel up and die, or become extremely skinny.

I don't see how that is good advice at all!??!!?!?!?

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

I don't see how that was good advice, and certainly not backed up by anything, either.

  • No im not diabetic, I eat tons of grapes a day, peaches, etc. it changes through time. Is it ok to eat cooked organic frozen spinach? I ate cooked spinach and cooked peas today to see how I feel eating cooked and raw. I didnt feel much of a difference\\. I ate my grapes afterwards.

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

    Mine??? Backed up by 80 10 10.

    Makes sense to me.

Try to live off of veggies without any fruits or nuts or seeds or meats or grains, just veggies and see what happens.

How many heads of lettuce for example, would i have to eat on a 3500 cal diet??

Also provided a link above, check it outl

    want more proof

    http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/diabetes-myths/

Just a myth with the fruit!!!

Funny, people on this site will eat 50-80% calories from fat but are afraid of natural sugars in fruit LOL

Don't like my 2 food example of an almost complete diet.

You could have at least been productive and let me know what it is missing as far as nutrients go.

50g of nuts and 50g of seeds would compliment it surely.

  • Will eating cooked veggies, still make me have nice skin and look young? Or only raw will do it?

  • I never eat processed junk ,not even for a treat sometimes, I eat healthy all the time, I just dont like unhealthy food.

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

Rawcanadian, i was agreeing with you re: the post saying that fruit causing hyperglycemia issues, etc. :) Sorry that wasn't clear.

I think if you're 80% raw by calories or better, your skin will probably be nice, but everyone is different. Small amounts of cooked food cause more problems in some peopel than others. Just experiement, sweet, and don't be afraid to try things for yourself. No one will have all of the answers for your individual body. :)

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

    oops sorry superfood2 ;-)

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

completely my oversight and lack of being clear. :)

  • Thanks :) I like to try things see how I feel. But to tell you the truth ,theres something about being 100% raw, it makes me feel very happy and I do feel alot better, I ate the spinach and peas cooked before I had the fruit ,I thought I was ok. But then my stomach got bloated and it felt like it was going to explode lol. I think I should of ate the fruit before the cooked spinach and peas. Im thinking of buying a dehydrater instead and make buckwheat bread. Do you think it will work?

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

No, I don't think you should eat buckwheat or buy gadgets to try to eat more processed foods.

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

Maybe buy a good blender and try mixing small amounts of lettuce with fruit like bananas and see if your system can get used to/ handle the raw veggies that way.

Then slowly increase the veggies over time.

    Quick and EZ!!!!

(ps i ate 2.75 lbs of grapes today in one sitting, my new record LOL)

  • Hi Sweet,

oh believe me there is nothing wrong with eating tons of sweet juicy fruit!

I would definitely recommend that you read the 80/10/10 diet by Doug Graham (check out his website http://www.foodnsport.com). Another site with lots of good info about this is Swayze's site (http://www.fitonraw.com).

But Doug's book is essential if you want to understand the reasons why to or not to eat certain things.

Until then I'd recommend that you get an account on nutridiary.com or fitday.com (they're both free) and check if you are eating enough calories each day. This is really important, because as soon as you start to undereat, you will get cravings for cooked food (believe me, that still happens to be far too often, if I don't pay attention to my calorie intake). You should aim for at least 2000 calories each day. If you do a lot of sports than even 2500 or 3000.

I also have weight to lose, but even though I am eating 2000 cals or more each day I am not gaining any weight, but losing it!

Oh and something else - never judge yourself! If you feel like you need to have some cooked veggies, then go for it! Being healthy includes far more than eating the "right diet". You also need to be happy and love yourself! Plus, there are options out there that are 1000 times worse than cooked veggies :-)

  • CeidrenCeidren Raw Superstar

I agree with what Greenscribe said; eating a lot of grapes has in the past given me hypoglycemic symptoms. They very readily interfere with blood sugar, and the standard, conventional, commercial transported seedless grapes are not nutritional superstars. Variety is very good, as are leafy greens. Whether you want to be 100% raw or not, sweet, depends on your personal health conditions and desires.

  • So then I should stop eating my deliciouse grapes ,I love them too much lol. What other fruit can I add that is high in nutrition? Im eating nectarines too.

  • nsns

I also agree with the comment about sugar issue with fruits, but it may not apply to Sweet - and I say that from personal experience, not from some theory or books. Some of us may have more sugar issues than the general population. So, Sweet, if you are able to handle all the fruits, go for it, by all means. You are probably young so the thing to keep in mind would be your family history. If there are sugar problems in your family then you might like to watch it for yourself - it, often, shows up later.

I will heavily emphasize on throwslikeagirl's comment regarding calories, again based on personal experience. It is very important to get the calories, whatever formula you want to use. If you enter what you eat on fitday.com (appears to be better than nutridiary), within just a couple of days you would probably know if you are eating right.

Thanks for the mention, throwslikeagirl! Love the name, too. :D

  • OMG I love being 100% raw ,Its so much better than eating cooked!!! I found this new recipe including veggies for once!! I always ate only fruit and sometimes sprouted mung beans and buckwheat. Im always going to have this for dinner. Its all raw ,Its called raw tacos or raw wraps. It looked so beautiful the way I made them in the boston green leaves. The mixture is with carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, parsley ,red bell pepper, and half a lemon. Im telling you this is such a clean fresh dish that I fell in love with it the first time I tasted it:o. Im so happy that I finally added in the green salad with some fruit-veggies too. I felt amazing after I finished it!!:) IM SO HAPPY!!

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

Wow, sweet, I'm really glad you found this! :)

  • HEHEHH Im really excited:) im going to make some of those raw wraps for lunch today.:)

  • swayzeswayze Raw Newbie

That's great, sweet! Staying raw is easy when we enjoy the foods we're eating. :)

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

I say keep eating the grapes!!!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7535523/Grapes-could-reduce-diabetes-and-heart-disease.html

and go get your sugar checked and you will see it is normal.

Also, a physical is recommend once / year, and you should get sugar, b12, Vit D, levels checked.

Being overweight and not exercising and getting sun and freshair is more of a risk factor then sugar.

Since there is NO evidence they are bad in any studies, keep eating them.
