Master Cleanse?

  • I just got a Champion juicer and will be starting the cleanse soon. My question is – can I juice organic lemons whole? Rind, lemon, seed and all?

  • KAIT – Yes you can! I believe that is actually the preferred way to do it because then you get all of the nutritional benefits from the lemon. Good luck on your cleanse :-)

  • I was wondering the same thing KAIT-good to know that I can because that’s how I prefer my lemonade!

  • chicorychicory Raw Newbie

I just want to know why all of the commercially prepared cleanses are sooooo expensive?! When I had my colonoscopy done I had to drink this huge gallon jug of salt water stuff. it was prescription and covered under health insurance, but still 54.00 copay!! the stuff worked quickly though, I must say

  • Today is my first day starting the MC, and had a really hard time getting the salt water down. Towards the end, i did put a bit of maple syrup in it, (not sure if that is bad to do, or has any effect on it) and even then, did not finish all of it. I was wondering if there could be an easier way to do this, like what was mentioned with the cayenne pepper. I took a swig of water, then put the pepper in my mouth and swallowed it all. I wonder what the difference is between doing the salt water flush vs the laxative tea? I think i read somewhere it’s best to do the salt. So i wondered about putting a bunch of water in my mouth, then dumping the salt in and do it in one go. (finishing the rest of the water by itself) any thoughts about this?

  • STENE: I believe instead of using the laxative tea strictly at night, you can use it in the morning to substitute the salt water flush. I plan to do this when I begin my cleanse.

  • To everyone who has completed a Master Cleanse:

After reading threads on this site and other RAW vegan forums, I was very excited to schedule one for myself. Unfortunately, today I came upon various posts on a few vegan/veggie forums that stated the cleanse is dangerous and does more harm than good.

Here is an excerpt from one of the posts Re: Lemonade Diet -

“Dr. Marc Lawrence, MD [who is a board certified Physician Nutrition Specialist who specializes in weight loss and nutrition, attended Stanford University, earned his medical degree from Cornell Medical School, trained in Emergency Medicine at Stanford, and General Surgery at Harvard] says the toxins in one’s body actually increase by using the Master Cleanse diet, just the opposite of what it claims:

The Dangers Contrary to the author’s claims, the Master Cleanser will cause toxins to build up, by depleting glutathione liver stores, the major detoxifying antioxidant produced by your body. Additionally the laxative effect caused by the diet will further acidify your blood and this can cause a profound metabolic acidosis. I have personally treated a number of patients in the Emergency Room, who presented with weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as a result of the Master Cleanse. Contrary to popular belief these “detox” symptoms are actually a result of a build up of toxins due to glutathione depletion, dehydration and a profound metabolic acidosis. One patient, whose acidosis and dehydration did not respond to IV fluid resuscitation, required admission to the hospital.

This diet is particularly dangerous if used, as the author claims to fight “colds” and ” flu”, since inadequate nutrition will weaken, not strengthen, your immune system.

The Bottom Line I would not recommend this diet for any reason, and consider it dangerous to your health.”

Reading through his site’s various celebrity/health/detox/diet book reviews and articles it seems he’s mostly pro-vegan from a health view, at least. [see for example this entry.]

What does everyone think of this? Can someone shed some light?

  • Hm? This is interesting. Don’t people feel really good afterwards and lots of energy? (I’m actually only on my 3rd day on the cleanse) I don’t see how you can be dehydrated on it, as I find myself peeing all the time. People do detox, if not on that, when they go raw I thought? As for the IV being rejected, I wonder if it’s because the body has been ‘reset’ and it’s something foreign to the body? Like when people have been raw for sometime, then eat ‘normal’ food, they get sick, or not feel well? I’m going to stick with it and see what happens. It hasn’t been too bad for me, a few stomach cramps here and there yesterday and today. I’m also curious as to what other people think. Especially the people that have finished it.

  • STENE: how long are you planning to cleanse? Let me know how things go. I’m preparing to begin mine October 9th.

  • I’m just doing the 10 day for now. I wish i knew more info on the salt flush. i have a hard time drinking 25 oz liquid at one time. So, the second day, i put water in my mouth and dumped a teaspoon of salt in and gulped it down. I drank as much water as i could. But I don’t know how crucial it is to get the full 25 oz with it, or if that’s a good amount to make the salt water somewhat drinkable? Today in the morning i just did the laxative tea. I really wish I knew what other people thought of this info on the cleanse being bad. anyone? anyone want to share their opinion??

  • I am starting the MC on Monday. My question is, I have the IUD and have had it for the last 5 years. Is there any danger in doing this cleanse with that since it cleanses the body of toxins and impurities??

  • I personally think the MC is dangerous. I tried it for a few days – despite my intuition that it is not a healthy thing – and my body reacted badly (though I have colitis, so I am apt to react more badly than some). I don’t think it is something that will cause lasting health defects or anything like that – but I believe that everything we know tells us that a juice fast is far healthier while also detoxifying. I believe a lot of the results ppl get from the MC are due to severe calorie and food restriction – not because of any properties of the lemons and maple syrup. This is not some magic potion -it’s just helping you to deny your body real nutrients for 10 days. As an aside – did anyone see The Office last week? The entire group decides to lose weight for a competition, and Kelly Kapur, the customer relations girl, goes on the Cleanse. You see her huddled over the pitcher of lemonade and syrup on her desk as she growls at her coworkers. She makes it a couple of weekly weigh-ins before passing out and being taken to the hospital. It was pretty funny.

  • Hi Quiora

I’ve not done the Master Cleanse – I’m really not convinced about the whole idea of ingesting Maple Syrup, Cayenne and doing Salt Water flushes…

However, I have done a few fasts using the Arise and Shine products – and I find them absolutely amazing!

Good luck on whatever you decide to do… Just remember to listen to your body! :-)

  • DagnyTaggart – I saw The Office!! (favorite show) and as funny as that was, it also irritated me a little bit just because now anyone who saw that show has a negative connotation with the MC, which is unfortunate, in my opinion.

I had great results on my cleanse, and I don’t think it’s dangerous at all. If it’s for a highly extended period of time, sure it may become dangerous, but I don’t see how toxins “aren’t being released” and actually stored… if that’s true, then what the hell were those crazy eliminations all about!? Anyway, I liked my results, and I’m starting another one this Monday, Oct. 6.

  • I agree with KathyKath. I am on my 2nd MC now and definitely can tell that it is working. I don’t feel that the MC is dangerous at all, if you follow the program exactly.

In fact, it has helped me tremendously.. My painful monthly cramps that I have had for 30 years are GONE after one MC.

I am on Day 5 now, and will see how I feel at Day 10. I may go longer than 10 days.

  • How do you guys prepare the few days BEFORE the cleanse? I know there is a post-cleanse ritual, but I want to know if there is any way to EASE into the MC…

  • KAIT – If you are high raw vegan, you shouldn’t have any worries about pre-cleanse preparation. Two days prior to my cleanse (tomorrow/Saturday Oct. 4), I will eat only fruit (in large amounts) throughout the day, and probably a big salad for dinner. Sunday, the day before day 1, I will eat mono meals of fruit. I’m not sure if this really makes any difference at all regarding the cleanse, but it definitely won’t hurt any :-)

However, easing off the fast with the post-cleanse instructions are very important. You can get very sick if you just jump right back into food after 10 days of nothing solid. Take it easy at the end, drink lots of juice and keep it simple simple simple.

I really cannot wait to start my next cleanse. I’m really needing it right now! I know I already posted this earlier on this thread, but if anyone is interested in starting on Monday, October 6th, please let me know! It’s so much easier to do a cleanse when you support of other people doing the same!

  • Hey KathyKath, I am interested in starting Monday. I never did the MC before and am scared since my willpower is low. I got all the ingredients, except for lemons. Do you know how many I should buy/should I get them all at once, or do they go bad?

  • I’m going to start Monday as well :-)

  • By the way, this will be my first MC!!

For those of you that have problems with the salt water flush. I had problems with it also gagging and all thought I was gonna hurl. but then I read someone idea on another site and it works like a dream for me. I use a straw and drink about a cup at a time i try not to get to the gag stage then I go do something for 5 or so minutes come back and drink another cup or so and continue on like that until it is finished. makes it a whole lot easier and it still works great. it works so much faster than taking the tea twice a day. you really need that big flush to get the toxins out faster and make your day easier on you with less detox problems. I highly recommend it. in fact I am doing it today it is a good way to flush out and restart especially when you have been cheating and need to get back on track. It makes me feel better knowing that stuff is out of my body. Phyically and mentally

  • Hey i heard that agave is better than maple syrup. Anyone know about that? I am going to whole foods tomorrow and was wondering…Also, all the sites vary from 80z to 10oz, anyone know the EXACT master cleanse recipe? thanks!

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

Not for this cleanse. Maple syrup has vitamins and calories you will need to get thru this. agave is alright for other things but it is very important that you do not deviate from the receipe. this is what works and if you change things around you will not get the results you are after.

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

also it is 10oz of water 1/10 tsp cayenne,2tbls grade B maple syrup, 2 tbls fresh squeesed lemon juice or lime juice per serving but you need 6 to 12 servings a day.

  • What if I HAVE to use agave? I haven’t been able to find grade B syrup anywhere!

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

Then you just wont get the full effect. and maple syrup is very yummy do you have a health food store near you they all seem to carry it that I have been in. of course all stores seems to carry different things. like I could find things in Arkansas that I could not here. I personally would use grade A before agave. and dont get me wrong I LOVE agave, I use it everyday. I just dont think it has any benefcial use other than sweetness. That is just my opinion.

but you can give it a go and see if it works for you. I think anything you try will be better than no try at all.

  • I’ve checked three stores & markets around me, but no luck. There is one more that I think might possibly carry it. I’ll check there tomorrow. I definitely want the full effect.

  • whole foods has it, if there is one near you! good luck

  • Yes, maple syrup (organic grade B) is definitely preferable to agave.

Also, it is 8oz. of water, not 10oz. Not that 2 more ounces of water will make a huge difference, but if you are making more than one cup at a time, it will definitely make a difference. The recipe in the book clearly states 8 ounces of pure spring water.

Hooray to everyone starting on Monday! This will be a wild ride, get ready :-) Glad to have support, though. Also, I will be tracking my progress and checking in with others on the official master cleanse bulletin board, www.therawfoodsite.com (click the Bulletin Board link). That board helps A TON! I’m excited!

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

OK I got the book out and actually does not say exactly for water it says to combine ingredients in a 10oz glass and fill with hot or cold water.

I actually made mine in 20oz bottles and doubled everything and would take at least 3 bottles with me to work and then make more when i got home
