The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

I bet you never even thought about having a BLT sandwich ("bacon, lettuce and tomato") while still living the raw food lifestyle, did you?

Well, I didn't either. But here it is! A raw friend of mine introduced this concept to me, and I fell in love immediately.

And no, that's not real bacon of course. Nor is it even eggplant bacon (which, in my experience is a !@# to make in the dehydrator and doesn't even taste very good anyway).

Nope, this raw food bacon substitute is...drumroll please...dulse seaweed! Dulse stores really well when kept dry. (If you don't have dulse, you can use a sheet of nori seaweed and cut it into strips, as I've done in this photo. Nori may be easier to find because it is used to make sushi rolls and is quite common.)

And what raw BLT sandwich would be complete without raw mayonnaise? Just like any good sandwich, the mayo is a big part of the draw, in my opinion. (Relax, I mean raw vegan mayo of course!)

I can eat 2-3 or even 4 "sandwiches" per meal. Very easy to pull together, especially if you already have a batch of raw vegan mayonnaise in the fridge.

You can store raw mayonnaise in refrigerator for up to a week.

Do not store assembled raw BLT sandwiches in fridge (or at all) because the dulse will get soggy really fast. Always put the dulse on last--right before eating.

So easy and yet... so good! One of my newest addictions lately and I wanted to share it with you.

I don't have dulse on hand and don't know where to get it in the Oklahoma City area. Can I do something with the seaweed sheets that I have?

Hi Rhinda, dulse and nori sheets taste somewhat different, but nori (seaweed sheets) could work. Just tear up a sheet or two. :)

OMG!! These are soooooo good. I'm in shock that the Dulse actually taste like bacon. I guess its sea bacon. BLT's were my favorite sandwich when I ate meat (long time ago). I was using tempeh bacon but recently I'm discovering raw foods and LOVE them. This is now a favorite!!

Hi, this looks really good but i was just wondering, do you soak the dulse first or do you leave it crispy like crispy bacon!
I've never eaten dry seaweed before so just wondered if it is possible?

I loved this. It was very cool and refreshing and quick lunch when hot from working outside all day in my garden. I used my eggplant bacon in place of the dulse. YUMMMMMMMM!

sounds deelish. Re: your eggplant bacon, did you season it with anything before dehydrating?

Thank you for replying. As you can see I don't get on my computer very often. I just wanted to let you know that I used Italian Seasoning, which is a premixed combo of Italian herbs and the mac nut mayo turned out delish!! Thank you for editing the recipe!!

By the way, I just made the raw cheesecake. I'll be bringing it to a party tomorrow. I haven't technically tasted it yet, but I was tasting the ingredients as I was putting it together and it was very yummy. I have no doubt that it will be a success tomorrow, along with your raw brownie recipe!!

Thank you for all your simple and delicious recipes!!

I had some leftover tahini and half a bag of dulse that someone graciously gave me. I've also been craving tomatoes like mad. So I fortunately recalled seeing this recipe on your site, and decided to assemble lettuce/tomato/dulse + tahini. OMG it is the best thing EVER! I have had it several days straight for lunch. My local health nut store ran out of dulse, to my complete dismay, so I just ordered six bags of it on Amazon. I've been craving it like mad ever since. I had to use nori today, but it just wasn't the same. The dulse really does give it that 'bacon' magic! (though I haven't eaten bacon in over a decade, so how would I know?)

Lol -- glad you've been enjoying!

I haven't had bacon in probably ten years too -- but I can still remember it!!

Any alternatives to dulse for bacon? I roll dulse up & swallow it bc it is so good for you but I never chew it, I hate the taste soo much. Too "fish food"-y for me.

Bacon alternative: Some people have had success cutting eggplant into thin bacon-like strips, marinating in something salty (olive oil and nama shoya perhaps) and then dehydrating.
