Raw birthday cake recipe
2 cups of raisins
2 cups of walnuts
1 cup of pitted dates
1/2 of a juiced lemon
Directions
1. Process or blend: raisins, walnuts and a few dates
2. Mould the base onto a plate in whatever shape you like. I made a "mound" :) but you can get creative and make a heart or even a star, or any other shape.
3. Frosting: Blend dates and lemon juice.
4. Spread frosting over the base.

As far as I'm aware, and I'm happy to say, my children (3 year old girl, 17 month old boy) have never had processed or refined sugars, but they do have their "sweets" on occasion. In fact, they get super excited when they get to sit down to a nice handful of organic raisins :)
Well, they were very excited when, on my son's first birthday we prepared this delicious, but simple, date and nut torte raw birthday cake that I like to call "the birthday cake alternative." Who says we can't stick to tradition and still keep it healthy!
We used a food processor to whip this up but you may be able to get away with using a blender if that's all you have on hand.
When making the base of your "birthday cake" you simply blend the "base" ingredients together and then mould onto a plate. For the "frosting" you blend up the ingredients and spread over the base. And that's it!
I have made this raw cake with other ingredients as well to change it up a bit, swapping out the walnuts with almonds for example, or using some figs in the base. There are lots of different variations, and the ones I tried were all very tasty. Enjoy!

That is a fantastic idea! But I had a question; you say your kids have never had any refined sugars? Are they able to drink juice, or do they only drink water to avoid the sugars?

Sorry for the late reply Jackie... they usually sip lemon water throughout the day.. and green smoothies are what they call "juice" which they have several times throughout the day :)
On occasion we add 100% orange juice or other kinds to their smoothies but we are doing that less and less because of the pasteurization.
They have the occasional green juice, and they drink almond milk... that's about it :) thanks for asking.
oh.. and lately we have been giving them water kefir which they really love!

My 6 yo daughter is well familiar with sugar and chocolate. For her last birthday I made a raw chocolate cake (with no raisins. she likes them alone) and when I asked her to choose any cake she wants for her party she asked for the same raw cake.
Sure it made me very happy :-)
(And ever since you posted your brownie recipe, when one of the girls asks for a cake that's what she gets and she is very pleased)

What an awesome idea! I've gotten rid of nearly all sugar from my house! My kids love water! They haven't had juice in months. I keep a lot of fruit on hand, so if they want orange juice or apple juice, they eat the fruit! They also drink raw milk and I have one with a milk allergy who drinks rice milk. I may try to switch him to almond milk, though! I'd really love to make this cake for my daughter's 9th birthday!

Amanda, you might want to consider switching ALL your children to almond milk. There is a lot of evidence the protein in milk is bad for all of us. Harvard just came out with a study reinforcing this. Watch the film "Forks Over Knives" and if you're up for it read about 'The China Study'. Best wishes to you!

I would like to add that lemon juice is a wonderful, cleansing and alkalising food but BEWARE how your children drink it as it takes the enamel off teeth, even watered down! Only drink through a straw.

Hello all,
My little girls first birthday is just around the corner and I want to make her a healthy raw birthday cake. I have yet to try giving her any kind of nut, which I know are in most raw recipes. I thoroughly enjoy ALL of the rawtarian's recipes and was hoping you - or anyone - may be able to help me out with a healthy nut-less alternative. I have done a lot of research and have been unhappy with my results. I have four weeks and counting.

Awesome! Thank you. I think I will "test" baby girl on almonds and pecans before her first birthday. From what I understand a 3 day test of each is necessary to be sure there are not any allergic reactions. Nut allergies do not run in either family so I am sure she'll be fine. Just scary!
Thank you for responding to my post. I found two other recipes I think I am going to try that are nut free. Looks like I have a lot of raw "test dehydrating" in my future!
