Recipe Directions

  • 1. OPTIONAL TO SOFTEN: The night before, throw the water, raisins and then oats into your blender. Let them sit overnight.
  • 2. In the morning, start your blender (and if you didn't soak the night before, throw the water, raisins and then the oats into your blender). While the water and oats are blending, chop the apple and then add it to the blender, too.
  • 3. Continue blending until the oatmeal is a nice, smooth texture.
  • 4. Eat! I love to top this oatmeal with more whole raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This recipe makes for a very filling breakfast.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

In the morning, my breakfast is almost always either fresh fruit, a green smoothie, or--my favourite--quick, blended oatmeal.

This recipe does take a bit of preparation because it should be soaked overnight, but, with only a few ingredients, it's so easy! (PS: You can do it without soaking but it won't be as smooth.)

Of course, like any good oatmeal, top this recipe with fruit or whatever suits your fancy!

PS: It has recently come to my attention that eating truly uncooked oats is not safe. Thus, I have modified this recipe to use quick rolled oats, which have been cooked but are way better for your digestive system. Truly raw (uncooked) oats are very tough on the digestive system and should not be eaten because of their high amount of phytic acid.

This recipe is fine. Just wasn't my thing I guess. Soaked the oats overnight so it was creamy. Flavor was good. I think I struggled with it being cold. Wonder if next time I might warm it up just a little and may like it even better. Also, I'm trying to lose weight so the serving size for me would have to be one serving.

I am a bit tortured about this recipe myself. It's really gummy.

I am going to try this with steel cut oats. After doing a little research online about raw oats, apparently they are fine if they have been soaked. I actually eat quite a lot of uncooked oats as it really helps with my acid reflux.

I love this app. This one is the best so far. However I have a question a out this recipe. The serving size have 3 portions, the calories per serving are 210, so it will be a total of 630 calories. I don't think the ingredients are too high in calories. I think I am reading this wrong. Do I need to multiply the portions by the total of calories, or the calories are the total calories for the recipe, including all the ingredients, and the serving size is just a guide and doesn't affects the serving size?
Thank you and this app is awesome!

Hi Sally,

I'm happy that you're enjoying the app!

I agree that this one is a confusing one, since it sounds like there's not a lot there in the recipe, but the calories are quite high per serving.

A 1/4 cup of dry steel cut oats is 150 calories, according to the tub of steel cut oats that's sitting in my kitchen. Thus, this recipe in full (1 1/4 cup steel cut oats etc) is at least 750+ calories.

Does this help?

Made this and loved it! I think I'll skip the blending next time as it's very smooth.

Could there be a typo on the ingredients? I was preparing to soak my oats tonight to try this for tomorrow and I noticed the cooking directions on my steel-cut oats are 1 cup oats to 4 cups water for 4 servings. Should the ingredients be 1/4 cup oats instead of 1 1/4 cup for 1 serving? Thanks.

Gonna try this for tomorrow's breakfast but I did notice EileenM that on the top of this recipe, it states this is three servings. If you want just one serving, you change modify it now. ;-)

i've never heard of steel cut oats. I have jumbo oats, is there a big difference. I'll start on them and then look for steel cut oats then.

Hi Juicy!

Yes, there is a big difference. :) You can easily find them in grocery stores in North America in the breakfast aisle, or in health food stores.

Hope this helps!

This looks delicious! I'd love to try this with some of our sprouted groats- especially the comment about the "oatmeal hot chocolate"! Yum! Montana Gluten Free Processors produces raw oat groats and raw oatmeal that hasn't been steamed, steeped, or heated. Plus, our oats are higher in protein than conventional oats! If you have any questions regarding the "rawness" of oats, please feel free to reach out. We'd love to help educate raw foodies about all the benefits of truly raw oatmeal :)

On the other hand... I was emptying the extra oatmeal out of the blender and some was stuck at the bottom, so I put some water in and whizzed to clear it out, and was struck by inspiration - added a couple of teaspoons of raw cacao powder and some honey, whizzed again until the jug felt warm and lo and behold! Creamy, frothy raw 'hot' chocolate! Every cloud....
