Recipe Directions

  • 1. OPTIONAL TO SOFTEN: The night before, throw the water, raisins and then oats into your blender. Let them sit overnight.
  • 2. In the morning, start your blender (and if you didn't soak the night before, throw the water, raisins and then the oats into your blender). While the water and oats are blending, chop the apple and then add it to the blender, too.
  • 3. Continue blending until the oatmeal is a nice, smooth texture.
  • 4. Eat! I love to top this oatmeal with more whole raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This recipe makes for a very filling breakfast.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

In the morning, my breakfast is almost always either fresh fruit, a green smoothie, or--my favourite--quick, blended oatmeal.

This recipe does take a bit of preparation because it should be soaked overnight, but, with only a few ingredients, it's so easy! (PS: You can do it without soaking but it won't be as smooth.)

Of course, like any good oatmeal, top this recipe with fruit or whatever suits your fancy!

PS: It has recently come to my attention that eating truly uncooked oats is not safe. Thus, I have modified this recipe to use quick rolled oats, which have been cooked but are way better for your digestive system. Truly raw (uncooked) oats are very tough on the digestive system and should not be eaten because of their high amount of phytic acid.

Sounds great, but is it not necessary to rinse the oats after soaking?

Hi Laura :)

I am from Perth Western Australia and have been on raw food for about 6 weeks now and get a lot of my recipes from your site :) Great recipes! I just have a question, Are Groats just normal oats ? or organic oats? I only know of oats here :) hope you don't mind clearing my confusion :)

Thank you

Mel

Hi Laura, I love your site and you're really inspiring. You showed me the many possibilities that lie in living one's passion! I tried the Raw Breakfast Bowl yesterday and I wasn't too keen on the result because I added too much almond milk (and mine is powdered almond milk) and the apple was too big, I didn't add enough raisins ... but I am looking forward to making it again!

Last night I decided to try this raw oatmeal recipe, but I didn't use raw oatmeal groats, just oat flakes (I will get round to buying raw when the flakes are all eaten). I was DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEElighted!!!!! It tasted sooooooooooooooo goooooooooooooooooooood, unbelievably good. I'm also grateful for the comments left by other viewers about not blending too long, so I didn't and it was great. I find it incredible that I'm enjoying a bowl of cool oatmeal!

Hi Sonia, so glad to have you here! Sounds like you are experimenting and finding success! Never heard of powdered almond milk - where do you get that?

I have used oat groats twice, and when eating it I have had a rather unpleasant taste at the back of my tongue/throat. The second time it was not so bad. I wonder if it is because the oats are not fresh enough?
Could there be other reasons for this taste?
Thanks for the great info in your site.

Hi Neville, interesting! I have never experienced this myself. But trust your gut and if they taste odd perhaps they are off, or they don't suit your body/palette and you should avoid

I had this morning, very creamy and yummy. I am surprised how filling it is. I struggled a bit with it not being hot, (rainy winter morning in New Zealand) but I still really enjoyed it. I think this will become a regular breakfast as I embark on this journey to increase my raw food intake. Thanks so much!

My pleasure Kyle - so glad you liked! It does take a bit of getting used to, but you can also let it blend for a bit and it'll warm up somewhat

Hi Laura-Jane,

Ive tried all your breakfast recipes and they are easy to prepare. I love them. I am wondering, how do you prepare raw food lunch if you are working?

Thanks!

Hi Gna, great question! I have a very boring but very practical salad recipe that takes NO time to prep as long as u have access to a kitchen at your workplace - I think I've called it "raw salad for lunch" or something like that (browse salad category in the app) - basically, it's carrot, avocado, tomato.  The avocado acts like the dressing, and it's surprisingly good!

We raw foodies make a lot of trips to the HFS (health food store!)  Good luck breaking your fast!  Take it slow, and raw food is perfect to break a juice fast with :)

Excuse my ignorance but what are steel cut oats? Can they be bought in the supermarket or just in health food stores? Are you based in Australia?
