The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

Don't believe me that this could taste as good as old-school SAD (standard American diet) ranch? Just try it. I dare ya :)

Raw ranch dressing is another one of those things that I cannot believe it's possible to replicate raw. But, hallelujah, it is possible.

There is nothing like a nice fresh carrot dipped in raw ranch dressing, no?

And I have even had the pleasure of dipping my raw vegan pizza in raw ranch dressing. "Cue heavenly harp sound...."

So here's my favourite raw ranch dressing recipe for you... I use it basically like a normal salad dressing or dip. I usually make one batch and serve it as a vegetable dip, salad dressing and maybe even on a few more exciting things, like in a raw vegan BLT sandwich or dip raw pizza in it if I am feeling particularly daring.

Of course, you also know that the best vegetables to dip in raw ranch dressing are carrots and broccolli, right?

Are you suppose to soak the cashews, or just throw in dry?

I love this recipe too!! I've made it about 5 times now! My husband and I grew up on ranch dressing. We smeared it on everything! Now that we are dairy and gluten free we were missing it and didn't even know it. Tonight I made it to put on kale that I'll be dehydrating. I'm curious to see how it turns out. Thanks so much!

Raw ranch dressing recipe

So GOOD! SO good! But get this, I forgot the water!
I cut the recipe in half to see if I'd like and simply forgot to add the water. It came out very thick (dah), and when I tasted it I just swooned with delight. Everything about it delighted my taste buds. The next day (today) the dressing was even thicker; I couldn't wait to taste it, so I did, with apple slices. My dog and I often share an apple and today I took my share and dipped them into some of the Raw Ranch Dressing (without water), again, swooning with delight.
Thank you Laura-Jane for another winning recipe. My only dilemma now is rather I should add that water next time I make it - LOL!

Ronna, thanks for sharing your story! I think the main difference is that without the water it is more of a dip than a dressing -- so it would be harder to pour on something. But, as you mentioned, the flavor would still be good. :)

My dog loves apples too!

I read through the first reviews, which I should have known better and scrolled down a little more, so it came out a little too sweet and overpoweringly apple cider vinegar-y for me. Next time I will add in those separately and little by little to make sure it's not too much of either one taste. Thanks for the recipe, I added more cashews and dill to hopefully help fix it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jamie! What kind of sweetener did you use? And it should have ACV bite, in my opinion :)

I am not raw, but this dressing is possibly the best alternative in the history of ever. While most 17-year-olds will be gobbling up unhealthy diabetes inducing slop, I will be carelessly dipping carrots, cucumbers, and strawberries, yes strawberries, in whole, clean, food.

We love it. The first time it came out better and I think it was because I squeezed the honey in without measuring. This time I measured and it came out too sweet for me. I think next time I will make without honey and try it while adding a little at a time. This is an amazing recipe. Our family can have ranch again. We are not raw but have a lot of food sensitivities. Tonight we are going to a dinner and I am taking this to put on our taco salad!

How do you get a smooth texture without a high speed blender? I just have a mediocre food processor for now. Is there an order for best blending? Should I soak the nuts?

Three thoughts, Hungry Sarah:

1. If your blender is crappy, then yes, soak your cashews in warm water for at least 45 minutes. Then drain. Then rinse clean with more water. Then pat dry with a clean tea towel and make the recipe immediately. (This softens and makes the cashews easier to blend but avoids having too much extra water in the recipe.)

2. The order for easier blending: put the wettest ingredients in first (water, lemon juice etc), and the dry ingredients (nuts etc) last.

3. Get a blender! Doesn't have to be a good one though.

Generally, blender is for wet stuff (sauces and puddings etc) and a food processor is for dryier stuff, like pie crusts, parmesan style sprinkle, etc

I don't like "normal" ranch, but I was looking for a dipping sauce for veggies. Well I said I will give this one a try. OMG, this is so good!!

I liked carrots with it but I preferred bell peppers! I had a rainbow of peppers and It was just very delicious. This dip will be a good way for me to eat more veggies, but It will be hard not to eat too much dip haha!

I am new to cooking and the plant based lifestyle, but I am really loving the changes in my health and overall well being. Question- can you explain the dill herb a little for me?
1) Fresh dill,
2) dry dill weed, or
3) dried dill seed?

Your site is awesome, thank you :)

Hi Brian!

Excellent question - I edited the recipe to make it a little clearer.

I call for 1 teaspoon dry dill weed (dill spice) in this recipe. (Optionally, if you have fresh dill weed you can use that instead if you prefer. Because dried spices have more flavor, if using fresh dill weed you can use up to 2 teaspoons in this recipe.)

(I rarely have fresh dill weed in my life, so I usually use dry dill weed myself.)

Hope this answers your question!

OMG!!! This is amazing i didnt have any dill on hand but i did have some dill essential oil and used one drop!!! This is the best dressing ever!! My 12 yr old daughter who dose not eat raw diet poured some into a small dish and used it to dip carrots in... She was telling her friend how good it was!!

I'm not sure if I made this right. I followed the recipe exactly as given but the apple cider vinegar taste is very overwhelming. Can you give any tips to make it taste less like vinegar?

Well since I already spent about $6 on this batch I was more looking for a way to balance out the batch I already made. (Maybe adding coconut milk or more cashews?)
You should warn people about the apple cider vinegar.
I thought that was a lot but since I only saw positive reviews I followed it anyway.

Hey! Sorry - that makes sense. I think it depends on how you like your ranch - some people like it zingy, like I do.

To balance it out after the fact, more cashews or maybe a bit more sweetness. Or probably both!
