Recipe Directions

  • 1. Add all ingredients to blender. Place soft ingredients like bananas in first, because that's what I was taught!
  • 2. Blend in your high-speed blender until nicely smooth.
  • 3. Your green smoothie is ready! Pour green smoothie into cup(s) or a large mason jar for on-the-go goodness.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

I have been a raw vegan for over two four years. And for breakfast almost every single day I have a green smoothie. And I am still not sick of them yet, if you can believe that! I can make them super quickly, and I always keep the main ingredients on hand.

If you have any trust in me believe me when I tell you that in order to make a tasty green smoothie you absolutely must have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec. Otherwise it'll be chunky and grainy and downright disgusting and you'll have to pinch your nose to get it down. When it comes to green smoothies texture is everything and high-speed blenders are going to take a slightly disgusting chunky mixture and turn it into a silky smoothie like the one in this photo that actually tastes delicious--like a treat. Texture is everything when it comes to this green smoothie recipe.

This may not be the most exciting green smoothie recipe in the world, but it's what I have for breakfast almost every morning so I figured that you'd like to know what I have for breaky! What I like about it as well is that it's not too expensive, since bananas are inexpensive here in Canada.

To clean your blender: Add 1-2 cups of water into your blender immediately and blend again to aid in cleaning process. Take carafe to sink and finish rinsing/cleaning blender right away. I am not a good housekeeper but the one rule in my house is to NEVER let the Vitamix carafe sit uncleaned. NEVER! Why? Because then if I'm lazy later on and it's not clean then I won't use it, then I won't know what to make, and I'll just eat nuts for dinner because I'm too lazy to clean the blender.  NEVER store recipes in your blender for this reason. :)

This recipe makes quite a large green smoothie, it's a perfect breakfast for 1 person. This is my go-to breakfast.

Hi Laura-Jane, I was wondering if you have a recommendation for someone who can not have bananas? I see so many beautiful recipes, like this one, and just thought with your experience you might know a trick for replacing them? Thank you!

Hi Amy!

I don't have an overall recommendation that works in any recipe, but here's what you need to know:

In most recipes, bananas are used for (A) creaminess and (B) sweetness.

So when replacing, generally, you need to think of both. For creaminess, avocado or cashews are often used. For sweetness, there are tons of options, like dates or agave nectar or other fruits etc.

But for this recipe in particular, you could use strawberries instead of bananas - it will just be a different smoothie :)

My girlfriend and I are really excited about your app. We read in one of the comments sections where you recommended that a family of 3-4 just double the recipes. Does that mean all these recipes would be good for 2 people or should we double them as well?

Hi Jeremiah,

The servings, in general, are for 1 person. However, the plan is constructed so that there will be plenty of leftovers to allow the meals to spill over as snacks, meals the next day, etc. Better too little than too much as we don't want you to go hungry :) Also, the first page of each plan explains what recipes should be used over multiple meals

Hope this helps!

It's my fault for not researching further, but before I went grocery shopping I saw I only needed a blender and food processor. Unfortunately I don't have a fancy blender nor its it in the budget to purchase one now. I'm going to do my best with what I have, but I wish that were specified before the recipe itself.

I used kale + a 3/4 inch piece of raw peeled ginger root (I wanted something to help me cover up the kale taste). Then I did computer work while drinking it, so I consumed it slowly over about 30 min. to an hour.

WOW! It tasted like Ginger Ale! It got progressively better tasting. Letting it sit or just drinking it slowly lets the Ginger flavor achieve its full flower. GREAT!

Hiyaaaa... I'm just getting started trying out recipes...so far doing great..but I get hung up on the calorie count on everything... this seems like a very high Cal drink...how can I believe I'll stay trim eating this everyday! Help me understand..it's a big mental block
Thx..ruby

Hi Ruby! It's all about balance. This recipe is definitely to be used as a complete meal. In terms of the calories for this recipe, if you only had three green smoothies per day you would still be eating less than 1500 cal, which is not enough calories in a day.

So as a substitute for a meal it's a great option. I know it's hard to change your thinking about food, but calories are only part of the story :)
