Recipe Directions

  • 1. Add all ingredients to blender. Place soft ingredients like bananas in first, because that's what I was taught!
  • 2. Blend in your high-speed blender until nicely smooth.
  • 3. Your green smoothie is ready! Pour green smoothie into cup(s) or a large mason jar for on-the-go goodness.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

I have been a raw vegan for over two four years. And for breakfast almost every single day I have a green smoothie. And I am still not sick of them yet, if you can believe that! I can make them super quickly, and I always keep the main ingredients on hand.

If you have any trust in me believe me when I tell you that in order to make a tasty green smoothie you absolutely must have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec. Otherwise it'll be chunky and grainy and downright disgusting and you'll have to pinch your nose to get it down. When it comes to green smoothies texture is everything and high-speed blenders are going to take a slightly disgusting chunky mixture and turn it into a silky smoothie like the one in this photo that actually tastes delicious--like a treat. Texture is everything when it comes to this green smoothie recipe.

This may not be the most exciting green smoothie recipe in the world, but it's what I have for breakfast almost every morning so I figured that you'd like to know what I have for breaky! What I like about it as well is that it's not too expensive, since bananas are inexpensive here in Canada.

To clean your blender: Add 1-2 cups of water into your blender immediately and blend again to aid in cleaning process. Take carafe to sink and finish rinsing/cleaning blender right away. I am not a good housekeeper but the one rule in my house is to NEVER let the Vitamix carafe sit uncleaned. NEVER! Why? Because then if I'm lazy later on and it's not clean then I won't use it, then I won't know what to make, and I'll just eat nuts for dinner because I'm too lazy to clean the blender.  NEVER store recipes in your blender for this reason. :)

This recipe makes quite a large green smoothie, it's a perfect breakfast for 1 person. This is my go-to breakfast.

Great recipe it's awesome, had to use Kale and just one banana. Cinnamon adds a great touch to the smoothie. Muy Rico (Caracas-Venezuela)

So glad to have you here David! You are a trooper with the kale - I find that kale has the "greenest" (most bitter) taste in a smoothie

I made this for the first time today. Had to make a slight variation (lettuce for spinach) since the store was out, but it's lovely!!!

I cut out one of the bananas and it was still delicious. I love starting my day with this kind of freshness !

Me too!  And I find making one every day gets rid of the "what'll I have for breaky" problem - and I just get to it and make my smoothie. I'm in the groove!

Well I learned that I would rather eat an apple than pulverize it in a smoothie. I do not like that texture at all :( but my kids did, so I gave them the first one and made me a new one. Without apple, chia or additional water. It was absolutely perfect and dreamy creamy! I have also never put cinnamon in a smoothie and that was amazing! I will forever add cinnamon to my green smoothies.

Hi Amber, Glad you found a way to make it work for you :) I like a tiny sprinkle of cinnamon in smoothies too. Gives a nice little twist! I feel the same way about adding lemon juice to a smoothie too

I absolutely love this smoothie and my day just isn't as good without it. I add raw vegan protein powder made with sprouted brown rice to mine. I read a comment on this smoothie being high points and I'm assuming it has to do with calorie counting. When you are eating raw the last thing you need to worry is calorie counting because you are eating pure nutrition and your body knows exactly what to do with it. I also read a study where someone found that even if they consumed 500 calories more by having raw food than they usually would they still did not pick up weight. Nutrition is my rule- if contains nutrition eat it, if it doesn't throw it away

Hi I am experimenting with some raw recipes and will slowly transition. I may not go totally raw but I would like to incorporate more of this into my diet. I have a ninja 1100 will that be okay for the high speed blender? I havent seen you mention it anywhere so was curious. So far it has done a great job on most of my stuff. I would like to get a vitamixer one day - one day ....

Hi Robin, I haven't used that blender itself, but most people simply use what they have access to :)  I usually suggest to make what you have work :) So go for it!
