Recipe Directions

  • 1. Add all ingredients to blender. Place soft ingredients like bananas in first, because that's what I was taught!
  • 2. Blend in your high-speed blender until nicely smooth.
  • 3. Your green smoothie is ready! Pour green smoothie into cup(s) or a large mason jar for on-the-go goodness.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

I have been a raw vegan for over two four years. And for breakfast almost every single day I have a green smoothie. And I am still not sick of them yet, if you can believe that! I can make them super quickly, and I always keep the main ingredients on hand.

If you have any trust in me believe me when I tell you that in order to make a tasty green smoothie you absolutely must have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec. Otherwise it'll be chunky and grainy and downright disgusting and you'll have to pinch your nose to get it down. When it comes to green smoothies texture is everything and high-speed blenders are going to take a slightly disgusting chunky mixture and turn it into a silky smoothie like the one in this photo that actually tastes delicious--like a treat. Texture is everything when it comes to this green smoothie recipe.

This may not be the most exciting green smoothie recipe in the world, but it's what I have for breakfast almost every morning so I figured that you'd like to know what I have for breaky! What I like about it as well is that it's not too expensive, since bananas are inexpensive here in Canada.

To clean your blender: Add 1-2 cups of water into your blender immediately and blend again to aid in cleaning process. Take carafe to sink and finish rinsing/cleaning blender right away. I am not a good housekeeper but the one rule in my house is to NEVER let the Vitamix carafe sit uncleaned. NEVER! Why? Because then if I'm lazy later on and it's not clean then I won't use it, then I won't know what to make, and I'll just eat nuts for dinner because I'm too lazy to clean the blender.  NEVER store recipes in your blender for this reason. :)

This recipe makes quite a large green smoothie, it's a perfect breakfast for 1 person. This is my go-to breakfast.

Hi Jackie,

I'm glad that you made the recipe! If the texture is a trouble, ask Santa for a new blender for Christmas :) It will make a world of difference :)

Absolutely AMAZING!! Just made this and my son that would rather die than eat spinach just had a sip and did not want to give my cup back. I am so happy that this is absolutely delicious and a huge success in my home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Well done, Minerva!! The trick is to get the ratio right - you can't even taste the spinach when done correctly :)

I'm starting the Rawkin' 7 day today and am loving this smoothie! I switched lime for lemon bc my juice and lemons disappeared this morning (😳) and added some of my nutrition powder. Duly impressed with the citrus, smooth, creamy mix.

After reading some comments of how sweet this was, I decided to use only one banana & subbed a stick of celery for the second banana. The result was delicious & refreshing & still sweet enough for my 6yo daughter to enjoy!

Is it possible to make this the night before or no? Our mornings and school drop off are always crazy.

Here's what I recommend. The night before, chop up all of the ingredients and place in blender carafe. DO NOT BLEND. Refrigerate the carafe. In the morning, blend, pour and rinse clean immediately. Drink :)

PS: I don't recommend *blending* the night before, because it will congeal and get all thick and gummy.

Your green smoothie is tasty, but it has waaaaay too much sugar. I find it hard to do your programs, because of the constant use of this recipe. When I did the raw smoothie challenge and the basic 7-day challenge for my husband and I, I had to buy dozens of bananas, oranges, and apples. I know you're trying to make it simple, but there have to be some alternatives. When I'm already drinking so much sugar, the raw fruit plate on the same day, the next meal, even, is just too much.

Adding in the chia seeds is good, but there is still not enough fiber to make up for all the sugar. Instead of 2 bananas and 2 oranges, cut down to 1 of each and add 2 extra cups of spinach or another low-calorie green veggie like kale, cucumber, or celery. You will cut 50 calories and nearly 6 grams of sugar per serving, 30% of the 20 in the original recipe. Double the chia seeds, and even though it adds a few extra calories, the total calories per serving will only be 131, and you will make a much more filling, satisfying, and well-rounded smoothie. Total Calories: 131, 25.9g carbs, 14.2g sugar, 6.83g fiber, 4.33g protein, 3g fat

P.S. Definitely add some extra water to account for the additional roughage and chia.

Hi Shanna,

Thank you so much for your wise and thoughtful comment. I love your tweaks and suggestions. I can't say that I disagree with you whatsoever. I like the way you think.

One of my favorite ways of helping my friends and clients make real change (in the form of actually making and eating new recipes, not just thinking about it) is to make it as easy as possible at first. Hence, this meal plan, where you make the same recipe again and again. This is by design, so that you don't have to "think" and you can master it quickly.

Then, I like to say, when it gets boring, that's actually a good thing, because it means you've mastered something and you're ready to step up the ladder and try new recipes and make tweaks to existing ones. Sounds like you have graduated to this level, and that's a good thing!

Merry Christmas πŸŽ„I'm doing raw smoothie week, started today, and noticed the silky smoothie recipe says 3 servings but then 1 large serving yet caloric info seems to be for 1/3 of recipe ingredients. I made 1 recipe and it made about 4 cups. I wanted to confirm is one serving (ie day 1 lunch) is indeed 1/3 of recipe?

Thx
Trine

Hi Trine!

Yes, you are correct -

In the app menu plan, you should drink the entire batch (about 4 cups)!

You are also correct, that the serving size when it comes to caloric info is 1/3 of a batch... thus, if you are counting calories, then you need to multiply the caloric info times three.

But generally, just drink up!

Usually smoothie s ratio is more about 1/4 fruit versus 3/4 veggie no?

Hi! I am not sure I understand your question, Flo - are you saying that this recipe needs more veg?
