Swissmar Borner vs. OXO Good Grips Mandoline

I’m in the market for a mandoline and these two are in the final running. Anyone have either of these and care to offer an opinion? Or if you’ve got some other brand that you love I’d gladly consider other options. Thanks for any advice.

  • I own a Japanese Mandoline, similar to this one:

If you have an asian market near your home, they should even be cheaper. Mine cost $15 and has worked wonderfully!

  • I own this one by Borner and it is about 10 yrs old. It washes up REAL easy and drip dry. Yes it is more then others but don’t we get what we pay for. It has multiple blades and when stored in case blades are covered. http://www.amazon.com/Borner-V-1001-Swissmar-V-...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1206284606&sr=1-1

  • Thanks for the feedback.

Rawrocks – the Borner you own is exactly the one I’m considering. Glad to hear you’ve been happy with it.

The reason I’m still undecided is because the OXO one has “feet” and the Borner doesn’t. I have no clue whether feet are an advantage or a disadvantage. Seems like feet would offer more stability..?

I have the Borner and I don’t like it a bit. I’ve never gotten it to work successfully. I use it very very carefully because those blades are SHARP and the little holder that’s supposed to grip the veggies doesn’t do such a good job. Maybe I’m just a klutz, but it’s been a waste for me. I should probably sell it on eBay.

I made noodles for lasagna last night and used my little vegetable peeler.

I’ve been wondering about the OXO because it has feet.

  • Greenie has a great point. Blades are sharp which is a good thing for slicing anything but fimgers. The gripper holder feels flimsy and takes getting adjusting to. It could use some impovements. It has saved my fingers and knuckles. Newer products usually have better inovations. I love OXO products. If this is the one you are looking at? http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Mandoline-...=pd_sbs_hg?ie=UTF8&qid=1206358057&sr=8-3 The reviews are not good. I just looked at my borner. The little rubber legs are still in place and it helps slippage and it hasn’t been an issue for me. I can make really thin or thick slices and nice jullian peppers. It isn’t perfect and sometimes the veges slip off the holder. When they do, I still have my fingers. I have never used it for potatoes cause I rarely eat them. Check out Amazon’s reviews and see what others disliked or liked. My next gadget will be Joyce Chen Saladacco Spiral Slicer. The borner doesn’t do it. I also have a salad shooter and NEVER use it. Good Luck.

  • I have a Pampered Chef mandoline, I love it. It comes with 4 different blades, it’s very sturdy and cleans up easily. I don’t remember how much it cost, but they are kind of pricey.

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yup, rawrocks, the OXO to amazon is the one I was considering. And, in fact, the negative feedback on the OXO is what lead me to posting here in the first place. I’d read this http://www.bookofjoe.com/2004/09/worlds_best_ma… and was all set to buy the OXO then I saw the comments and began to wonder…Seems as though the world is divided into people who’ve tried mandolines and almost killed themselves and now hate ‘em and those who’ve almost killed themselves but managed to get enough practice with proper technique and now love ‘em. I think I’ll get a kevlar glove and the Borner. Sounds as though the Achilles’ heel with all mandolines is the holder. I’ll post back once I’ve bought one and tested it out. Thanks again!
