Calorie/Nutrition Counting Link

Hi, everyone. So I was looking for a way to get the scoop on the fruits and veggies I’m eating and I came across this site, which you probably already know about: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

It’s a bit hard though to figure out, say, ‘a handful of almonds.’ Does anyone know of any other free nutrition counters?

Also, I read that the standard way to decide what your caloric needs are is to just multiply your body weight by 10. Do you Raw foodies find that this applies to you as well? I know as a runner, that I can definitely add more than I have been.

  • That doesn’t sound right to me. I weigh 102 and know that I get more than 1020 calories a day! I work out 4-5 days a week and also walk a lot. Did they account for people’s activity level?

  • The whole body weight times ten thing is the number of calories you need to consume if either: a) you are sedentary (e.g. don’t move at all, all day long); or b) you want to lose weight. So for you Mon46, if you were stuck in bed all day, you’d only need to eat 1020 calories to maintain your weight. But as soon as you get active, you need more calories.

  • kathrynintheraw, I think I might try that stuck in bed thing sometime. I could use that right about now…:)

There is a calorie and nutrition calculator at this site: http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/nutrient-search It has a bunch of cooked of cooked stuff on there, I know. But it has all of the nutrition information for raw stuff too. I hope this is useful (:

  • I use that one too =)
