  • nycgrrl and chicagomama – i’ll miss your posts here.

I just started raw food a couple of months ago and i feel so happy to have discovered this thread, site, and 811. I read every book i could find on raw food, but luckily it’s been too soon to have gotten attached to all the typical raw food recipes with nuts, seeds and avocado. I was even thinking of buying a dehydrator…..

I’ve been feeling really good this week – no hunger (which is amazing for me). I also finally am back to the gym. I actually feel like exercising, which has not been the case lately. It feels intuitively right to be eating so many fruits and veg.

I just finished the book and I found it absolutely convincing and inspiring. I do have resistance, but I am trying not to act on it. (can i eat this way forever? – i already have nostalgia for certain foods). I also am eating completely differently than my dh and kids. Although I have been following 811 completely, i have some anxiety about future social situations (dinner with friends, family stuff, etc.) and how I’ll deal with it.

still having some issues getting the calories up especially in light of Dr. Grahams suggestion to eat between 1-4 meals.

oh, and one question: i’m using cronometer, and i’m quite low on some minerals (e.g. sodium) – should i be concerned? I am eating greens.

  • ejowett – welcome.

i’m pretty new to 811rv myself, but i highly doubt you will gain any weight doing 811.

One thing i’ve been trying to do is eat as meals, not eat every hour. I’ve been having lots of watermelon for breakfast. Then I wait a few hours until lunch (and i’m hungry) and have another meal of fruit or fruit and greens. In the past i snacked all the time, but I don’t think it’s great for my digestion.

It may help you to eat one fruit at a time instead of a smoothie with lots of different fruits and veg. I also am really surprised after doing this for 8 days that i am not hungry all the time. It seems like if I eat enough fruit it sustains me until the next meal.

once you read the book i think you will be reassured that you don’t have to worry about your sugar consumption (as long as you are getting it from fresh fruits).

You can see from my previous post that I have been losing weight. Before raw it seemed impossible to lose a pound.

    Hope this helps.

  • okapilookame

i’m pretty much mono-mealing on bananas at the moment, aside from a couple of mangos yesterday…i’ve cut out the dates…

why dou you ask ??? :o)

  • the tooth thing happens with each meal and stays for a short period after

i can pinpoint the pain which is why i think it may be a hole

the thing is i’m long overdue for a checkup and i’m sure in the process they will find a hole..they always do…i’m just not sure if i’ll have any reactions

i’ve only just started raw so i’m no mr purity, but you can never be too sure, huh ??

  • i’m not scared about my teeth, nor of dentists…just want to make sure i’m ok with the anaesthetic

my first fillings were given without anaesthetic, so depending on how i feel tomorrow, i may just go down that route

i understand what you are saying about symptoms etc, but i will have the checkup…if they find a hole i will want it filled…if they don’t then i’m happy to start thinking in terms of symptoms

a few months ago i had a flu which came with the most chronic toothache….i went to the pharmacist for pills and a local anaesthetic spray…the pharmacists insisted i see a dentist, but i knew it was related to my illness (some kinda virus, maybe)....anyways 1 week and a lot of painkillers later and my toothache cleared along with my flu

    this is different

    i’m greatful for your input…thanks

    elliot :o)

  • ejowett…..welcome…..glad you’ve ordered the book, i’m sure you’ll enjoy it…with regards to weightloss, i wouldn’t worry…it will happen…keep in mind that you would have to consistantly eat the same calories as you burn NOT to lose weight….check the link in the first post to calculate bmr, factor in your workouts and then aim for a slight defecit…how much of a defecit depends on how mentally strong and determined you are…eating less than you need will bring with it issues of craving…strike a balance

i’m actually eating approx 2000 calories daily (less if i can)...i’m very overweight though and therefore my bmr plus activity should mean me eating anything up to 1000 more….i’m riding the defecit daily and there are days when i can easily eat more and others less…to do this it’s important to be aware….if i eat too little and succumb to craving i could blow everything

so tomorrow if i feel that i need to eat 3000 calories, i will…the weightloss is secondary….my health and sanity come first

you will feel full on fruit because your stomach has shrunk over time due to eating denser, calorie rich foods….

dr d. says that in order for us to eat to sustain our energy we must eat sufficient calories and in order to do this we need to regain the elasticity of the stomach….to this end he recommends that at each meal try to eat an extra 2 mouthfuls once you’ve had enough…over time you will be able to accomodate more without any discomfort…. i used to have trouble with 3 bananas in my smoothie…now i can quite happily eat 7

check out the picture of dr.d (from last summer)

http://vanboughner.com/ (scroll about 1/3rd of the way down)...i’m sure you can guess which one he is

does this look like someone who consumes 4000 calories a day, in 2 meals ????...he’s about the healthiest doctor i ever saw…one who i’m happy to take health advice from…..anyways, that’s a lot of food which takes some practice to accomodate

with regards to your meals…simple is better…optimum is mono-mealing, but don’t restrict yourself to this unless you are very determined and believe in the reasons why it’s optimal….without a true insight into why it’s good to eat like that you may feel ‘deprived’....so, for the moment try to keep things as simple as possible…maybe keep to 3 ingredients if you can

mimo22….it’s interesting that feeling of emptiness…..so contrary to cooked ‘hunger’...with cooked i would think i’m hungry and need to eat for all sorts of reasons like cravings and blood sugar imbalance (bought on by cooked food)...with fruit, i’m satisfied…a good meal lasts for a few hours but then i suddenly feel empty…real empty…

it feels so clean and efficient….like high quality fuel should….you fill your tank, go aboout your business as your fuel burns…then you reach an empty tank…no more fuel…but also, no residue hanging around the bottom of your tank and no dirty bi-products of the fuel clogging up the fuel line, filters and exhaust….

    time to re-fill

    what an experience this is

  • I love fruit, don’t get me wrong, but eating so much of it and little greens makes me get really strong SAD cravings. What would you all recommend? I don’t want to take two steps backward!

  • chicagomama: I spent my first semester of college in the city of Boston and the market below my dorm sold mixed organic fruit salads. They were about about seven dollars and easily held me over until the next meal. I would eat anywhere from 4-6 of them a day and drank a lot of water. I lost forty pounds in three months and I feel great! Since then, I have transferred to a smaller college in my homestate of NJ. Produce is hard to come by, nevermind ORGANIC produce. By having those mixed fruit salads readily available, I came to crave fruit!!

  • Awesome… I totally appreciate the feedback. el-bo, I absolutely love the fuel analogy.. I can’t wait until I feel that way! I’m afraid I’m nowhere close to monomealing. To stick with this, I think I am more apt to eat 5-6 times throughout the day. I still have yet to read the book, but I get the impression this method isn’t optimal. Why is that? Also, a few hours ago I had mentioned feeling “uncomfortably full” from my smoothie.. well, only about an hour after that I was hungry again and felt like I was raiding the fridge for more fruit…what gives?! It is soo weird. Maybe my body is “working out the kinks” since this is my first day… or maybe I’m just not ready for this?! I would love, love, love some more feedback! Thank you so much everyone!!

  • by mono-mealing i mean 1 type of food at a time not one meal per day…each type of fruit or veg will digest slightly differently…1 type of food per meal allows for all digestion to work on that food (specialisation of labour)...

i’m only guessing, but with your smoothie, you didn’t add enough banana…if you simplify the smoothie a little…just the spinach and banana….try to include as many bananas as you can…this will keep you full for longer….save the berries, mango and grapes for another meal (a nice fruit salad maybe…or a great salad dressing)

if you are hungry after an hour, eat again…after a while it should balance out

you really must get rid of the old ‘diet’ restricive thinking….the 811 lifestyle is all about abundance…you will really need to conquer your fears concerning sugar and overeating…you’ll find it very hard to overeat fruit…unlike cooked food or high fat foods it doesn’t have the same triggers….unlike cooked or high-fat raw recipes, the 811 encourages you to re-learn how to eat foods in their unadulterated form….salt and spices are things to try to avoid…they are the same salt and spices that help to make cooked food so addictive

don’t be too hard on yourself…once you’ve read the book you’ll have at least enough knowledge to look to when your own experience throws up more questions or doubts

  • pianissimapianissima Raw Newbie

okipi- i am in total agreement. we know next to nothing about nutrients in food and how they react in the body (let alone a healthy body). i did find the “count” a good tool to see how much i needed to eat for the first few days though.

  • bittbitt Raw Newbie

well after i “quit”, i actually stopped craving nuts. i have had a few seeds yesterday and today but no nuts really. well, actually today my husband made some mango/almond milk “pudding” and i ate a few bites then started getting grossed out by the almond milk. it is like i am naturally gravitating towards fruit and green smoothie in the morning and salads at night. i eat either 1/2 melon or 1 pint of berries a day. plus at least 3 bananas. does that sound reasonable?

  • okay so i am at the end of day 3 of eating 811. and i gotta say… i don’t really think i’m diggin it. i just never really feel completely full – or maybe i should say i never feel satisfied. also, i have always LOVED fruits and vegetables but i feel like i am being turned off from them now—just craving veggies less. i also feel my cravings for cooked food increase – i had to cook my dandelion greens tonight!! has anyone else experienced this? i am trying out 811 primarily for weight loss, but i am thinking adding some seeds and nuts back into my diet might be better.. what do you guys think?

  • ejowett – for me it’s been 11 days and today is the first day i really feel like eating something else. I love fruits and vegetables too, but i’m craving vinaigrette dressings and dry stuff like crackers and nuts. I’m going to ride it out and continue. I really want to get through 30 days (and hopefully beyond) because i want to see how i’ll feel.

I wonder if today was more difficult because i didn’t combine properly – melon and mango with salad – so i didn’t feel great.

  • Today was my first successful day and I ended with 88-6-6 :-)

  • pianissimapianissima Raw Newbie

today i didn’t feel so great, but i think it was poor combining with smoothies and fruit. what does your menu look like ejowett-

bitt—no wonder you are craving fats, you aren’t eating anything! =) imagine how many melons it would take to equal the value of just one cup of seed cheese…

here was a sample of my day: 3/4 of a huge watermelon, 3 mangos, 2 bananas, 1 bunch parsley, 2 lemons, 1 orange, 3 chard leaves, 1/2 zucchini, 1 bunch bok choy, 1/2 head of lettuce…

the amount of time i spend eating is a little overwhelming. that is my only complaint so far. otherwise, if i’m eating my greens i feel great.

  • MarichiesaMarichiesa Raw Newbie

    Hey Rawk,

Sorry for the delay..I just read your post. Yes I’ve felt angry-pissed off mostly. I’m working it out though. No avoiding it through food now. ;0) Its wakey wakey time!!! ( HAHaHaHAHAHAH)

  • nycgrrlnycgrrl Raw Newbie

hey ejo-i think if you want to eat some nuts, do it. Don’t have 2 cups, but have a few if it will help cut the cravings.

Found an old article that was interesting to me, and I thought I’d share. Not saying it’s all correct, but I found it interesting, esp the part about gorillas, and the pesticide use on bananas.

    http://www.vegansociety.com/food/raw_food.php

  • Okay, I’m sorry to be totally dominating this forum (and boring you to tears), it’s just that your responses are so helpful, and I have absolutely no one to discuss this with in person. So, el-bo, I will certainly use your suggestion and do a banana-spinach smoothie tomorrow morning. I am trying to plan tomorrow’s menu, and I think it will go something like this:

large banana-spinach smoothie with about 4 bananas – I will split this into two, drink one first thing in AM, then the other half later on in the morning

large green salad with veggies for lunch

a couple of oranges or a bunch of grapes for a snack

large green salad with veggies for dinner, maybe with a little avocado

couple of cups of melon for dessert

I think this approach makes 811 seem a little more doable for me… how does that sound? Does that seem like it works? And I definitely do need to conquer my fear of overeating…even though it seems like a lot of food, I still need all of those calories!! Thanks again for your help :)

  • nycgrrlnycgrrl Raw Newbie

Jackiev we are out near montauk—lots of fruit and veggie stands out here. I just ate like a pound of spinach and some watermelon earlier and chemical-free strawberries (they don’t call them organic since they’re not certified, but they’re amazing)....the list goes on.

  • pianissimapianissima Raw Newbie

mimo22—totally normal, but totally mental. ;) it’s how much confidence you have in it. if you think its normal, soon your friends and family will just shift their “vision” of you. the most difficult shift was my own… realizing this was THE normal diet, why shouldn’t i be open about it?

i wanted to bring something to light. i recently watched this documentary that EVERYONE needs to watch. here:”http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8250619454941053618&q=ring+of+power&ei=WjE0SJmOA4eQ4wL8yNjkCQ”

you won’t even believe the complex web of power… anyway, it reminded me of how important buying locally was. i googled (blackled actually) “whole foods” and the carlyle group is a share holder. eeks. thank goodness for farmers markets! and local farms!

  • pianissimapianissima Raw Newbie

KAIT—why do little greens? graham says greens and the MOST important component of your diet. it’s just calorie-wise they are insignificant compared to the fruit. but you should be eating just as much as before. it’s the fat that you exchange for fruit.

“hungry but not hungry”... here’s my theory, because i used to experience it EVERY night and now i don’t (since this diet change):

i think that eating a lot of fat makes us feel “full” because we simply can’t take anymore of it, not because we met our bodies needs in terms of caloric intake. so you can be DONE, still NEED more food, but your body will be unable to do anymore work, so you’ll feel awful eating more…

    ring true for anyone else?

  • That fuel analogy rings true for me too. I love the way I feel after eating – energetic and clear headed. It’s such a contrast to the way I have eaten before.

Over the years i have tried a lot of different ways of eating (vegan, macro, SAD, etc.) but unfortunately what always was a constant was eating for emotional reasons (stress, boredom, sadness, etc) and snacking constantly. I could finish one meal and within an hour be onto something else. I always felt bloated and at the same time unsatisfied. I also would beat myself up for not eating better or less.

I love that I’m not obsessing about food constantly now. Things seem so much simpler.

ejowett – i’m new to this too but one thing you might want to try is to eat the melon as a separate meal and increase the amount. You could add some fruit to the salad at lunch, otherwise your lunch is super low on calories (in fact it seems like you might not be getting enough calories for the day).

  • RawKRawK Raw Newbie

welcome ejowett, good to have another new person join—i also jumped in a little late. today is day 3 for me, i look forward to seeing you on your day 30 and beyond.

i agree with mimo about the melon…dont do fruit (especially melon) after meals. do fruit first….you’ll learn in the book that fruit is meant to spend as little time in the stomach as possible. but he also says feel free to mix in some greens with your smoothies, etc. hmmm…

well today was a great one—had some neat greens, including kale, sorrell and spinach. fruits i had some peaches, strawberries, valencias, mangos, grapes and bananas. topped it off with a small avocado for dessert and i topped 2000 calories—yes!

    calories 2158, 87/5/8

  • MOTHMOTH Raw Newbie

Wow, thanks for that, Pianissima. Even though I work at Whole Foods (in the floral department) I have recently been feeling the urge to hunt out some farmers markets and eat more local. I need to get going on that. I will bike some distance if I have to in order to find fresh local fruit. (don’t have a car)

Today: I feel AWESOME. Instead of just cramming the calories down my throat like the first few days of the challenge, I’ve been eating very intuitively, eating as much as I need to feel full, then stopping, and grazing mostly. It works better this way for me now, because as I mentioned, food is running low. I have apples and cucumber left, and that’s about it. Nonetheless, I don’t feel as though I am lacking in any way. With the full flush of summer upon me, I feel satiated by less food and more water. If I run out of apples, I will simply fast for a few days and live off my bodily stores. The intense heat and sun makes my appetite wan and fasting becomes much more approachable. Either way, I am planning on a fruit feast when I get paid later this week. :-)

I feel so at peace lately. All I find myself wanting to do is write, and write and write. My novel is growing up! :-) I know that the clean diet of mostly fruit is helping to open and strengthen my channel and it feels perfectly thrilling to be able to see the flow of life in everything I do.

I’m such a believer in fruit. It has amazing healing qualities. It feels the best in my body. When I want something non-sweet, I eat cucumber, or just gnaw on pieces of romaine. I love romaine too. I devoured my last head of romaine earlier, just munching on it, savoring the flavors. And DATES. MMM…fresh gooey caramel-tasting dates!

okapil—i like the way you think. i get tracked on one thing and its refreshing to have someone knock you off those tracks and come at it from a different angle. awesome.

so i found some old in shell brazil nuts sitting in the back of my cupboard—no lie. probably old, but tasted fine. i just had half of one and feeling much better already—ok, that part im making up. but, they are pretty tasty right out of the shell tho.

thanks for the info el-bo. dont have time to put up a screen shot, so

btw Kait—well done. how did you feel?

  • RawKRawK Raw Newbie

Marichiesa—no probs. i m glad you have awoken! i have yet to experience it, but look forward exploring emotions. ;)

well another great day, it is day 4 of this grand adventure for me. i had 2.5 pounds of pineapple this morning and it didnt totally agree with me. anyone else have this feeling? i wonder if it was because it was the first meal of the day or because pineapple can be somewhat acidic. ideas?

later on i had 6 bananas whipped with a pound of romaine and spinach mix. very tasty.

got a nice 18 mile bike ride in back and forth to work, knocked out my exercise for the day AND saved some gas. hope all is well with everyone—

el-bo, if you wouldnt mind…could you explain how one might go about attaching the screen shots that you do from time to time?

  • RawKRawK Raw Newbie

today was a good day…i do miss the tastes of salt and sweet on my salads, but i will continue to find replacements. and of course, once my taste buds get back to normal, well then it wont be a problem at all.

day 2 went better, more calories with a good ratio calories 1906, 84/7/9

i like how Graham puts an emphasis on getting out in the sun. so i followed thru getting some sun on my run and while building a bamboo trellis in the garden for my pole beans.

farewell to the people who dropped, drop by anytime and let us know how youre doing.
