soo sad.

Ok, so kinda random or whatever… but last night I was on goveg.com and watched the video “meet your meat” for the first time, and I started totally crying!! :( I’ve read so many books describing the cruelty that animals face every day, but seeing it was something completely different… my bro watched it with me, and he goes, “i think i just went vegetarian..” I literally had to turn it off the first time thru, cause I couldn’t stand to watch it!! All I can say is.. I’m sooo glad I haven’t eaten meat for about.. hm. five months now?! And it made me feel all pouty after too, just thinking about all the people in the world still eating animals. I feel like helpless, ‘cause it’s not like I could stop everybody from doing it!! lOl kk. just had to share!

I totally cried too when I saw that video. I get all misty when I see the commercials on TV that just show pictures of abused dogs and kitties. It sucks that we can’t change the world by ourselves, but at least we can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that we’re doing our part to hopefully effect change.

I so understand. I don’t know if I could watch it, probably not, but I wish it were required for meat eaters. My husband and I don’t discuss it, sensitive subject, but I wonder what he would think of it. The news video of the sick cattle still haunts me and I saw that by accident. My philosophy as a vegetarian has always been if I couldn’t kill it myself I couldn’t eat it.

heyenglish – I’m the same with the commercials!! When I hear the first notes of Sarah McLachlan’s song Angel on tv I have to run from the room or hide under pillows!

  • That’s the movie that made me a vegan overnight. It’s powerful!

  • good point amysue. in the 1980’s i was involved in animal rights, PETA, etc. and it broke my heart to read the articles and see pictures in magazines. I used to cut out the pictures of really sad looking abused pigs and cows that had the captions “does your food have a face?” and I’d tape them to our refrigerator -my parents really tolerated a lot when i was a teenager.

I discuss it with my kids, but haven’t shown them videos yet. In time I will, but now, they’re not ready. There’s a balance between educating them and showing them something that will just horrify them and not help them understand why we do what we do. Adults and youth are a different story and I think they all should be shown this information!!! In the past, I’ve shown my husband a few slaughterhouse video’s from meat.org… he couldn’t finish them…. it was quite upsetting.

heyenglish, I hear ya about the abused puppies and kitties. the whole domestic animal, dog racing, and pet industry is its own terrible tragedy. I urge everyone if they want a pet to please adopt from a shelter to help those in need and if you must eat any animal products, get it from a trusted source. Preferably a local, organic, humane, self slaughtering, farmer.

I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. I found out about the animal cruelty in an book about green living and than saw more graphic pictures (not great ones either) in vegetarian book and I that alone made me go veg. There wasn’t any movies or anything it about it than – no internet. But yeah, I still can’t watch any of those videos or movie without wanting to ball my eyes out. I can’t even deal with knowing about it sometimes.

If you guys are not on the email list for Farm Sanctuary, I suggest you join because you will get good emails about the wonderful work they are doing saving animals. It helps you feel a little better about all those movies and videos we see and that there is a difference being made. Everyone who stops eating meat, dairy and wearing and using animal products and animal tested products makes a difference. :)

Mamamilk, have you seen the “The Meatrix” – it is a cuteish set of little movie cartoons that are a gentler way of educating about this. Maybe that might be OK to show your kids and than you discuss with them. http://www.themeatrix.com/

  • Coming from a farming/hunting background I really never would have thought that I would be sympathetic with these ideas. My husband is still resistant, so I have to be careful. However, I must say that lately I have been having thoughts about how horrible it is to kill animals. Not so much that it is wrong in the sense that it would be to kill a human, but more along the lines that it is totally sensless. Not to mention the fact that is it unsanitary at best. I am begining to feel that killing animals is not the worse part. It can be done in a humane way. However, look at how the animals are farmed. The animals do not lead happy healthy lives. They are fed food that is not natural. They are given meds that they should not naturally need, and are not given room to strech. Also, the surroundings are not generally peaceful. The wild animals have even been affected by unsanitary farming as is evidenced in the diseases that they needlessly suffer at a higher rate than ever before.

  • I hear ya queenfluff. There was no internet in the ‘80s.

Yes! The meatrix! I forgot about that… I’ve seen it sometime ago – it’s hysterical and sad all at the same time. My kids have watched a few. And yes, we try to start them young in the discussions. Society is such a pull when it comes to young people. I mentioned in another thread that my 5 year old son already talks about being a nice farmer when he grows up and not ‘scraping the stomachs of baby cows’...nice.

Anyway, thanks for that queenfluff. we’ll watch some today. ; ) (I like almy – he/she’s so cute)

pulse, i agree. if you are what you eat, and you live a life of suffering and trauma, then what are we eating? yep, suffering and trauma.

Meet Your Meat made me vegan overnight as well.

  • thecavsmanthecavsman Raw Newbie

Its interesting – I became vegan not even caring about the animals particularly. I did it because meat is cooked – and because it is full of chemicals. However, once the transition to raw occured I realized how horrible the meat industry is and I could never see myself eating meat again, not only for health reasons, but for moral reasons.

  • same same. I think I mostly went vegan for health reasons.. but around the same time, I started researching what goes on in slaughter houses, etc. And I was just disgusted. I really just hope that as time goes on, more and more people will realize what’s happening and try going vegan! Not only for the animals, but for themselves and the environment as well. I guess it’s just hard for people, because it’s not the norm… Hopefully this’ll change in the future!

I havent seen the vid you guys are talking about ‘meet your meat’ but dont think I could handle it! I grew up in a house of mainly rescued animals (in fact I think that how we got them ALL come to think of it!) and my Mum was heavily into rescuing, mainly cats. I have had amazing experiences helping her raise tiny tiny kittens, 2 hour feeds, encouraging them to pee like their mothers would when they wash them etc etc.

    But,

    Until recently, I ate meat.

I tried being moral loads and loads over the years, I’ve been vegi on and off my entire child/teenage life, struggling with the fact that I didnt like animals to suffer, but liked meat. I guess I just gave up and went with the fact that I liked it..

Since going raw in April/May, so not long… I have said to people that asked “I chose not to eat meat, so I dont eat meat, but if I wanted to I would..” I still get friends that say things like “yes but if you were pregnant etc, then of course you’d have to eat normally” So frustrating and judgemental.

As it happens, I have pretty much stuck to vegi and not only that but mainly vegan raw, cut out all diary, eggs etc too, and am starting to find I dont want to eat it.

I just dont wanna go there any more, even if out socialising/restaurant etc.. and there’s all sorts available I chose the raw and vegan options. I never thought I could be like this but am soo much more aware through this raw journey..

Meat just looks now to me like, ugh, lumps of dead animal (which of course it is) rather than anything appetising, which it used to.

Cant put anything in my mouth anymore that could have been my friend.

I know alot of you have been vegi for a long long time but I guess we all start somewhere hey? I think I’m on my way!

P.S Some celebrity chefs here (UK) have been raising awareness for poultry welfare, they have done very risky and quite sickening tv programs about broiler chicken etc and how eggs are farmed in batteries. They are still cooking them but making a big difference to their lives prior. Even if you’re vegan/veggie I believe where the opportunity is there, we should take it if we can make a difference to the lives of those animals that are raised for meat.

They really have done a sterling job and have made MAJOR supermarkets have to sit up and listen by raising consumer awareness.

Please if you get a chance, check this out and join Hugh’s petition, its a couple of clicks and you dont need to sign up to any marketing, unless you want to..

Its really making a difference here, been on the news, in all the papers. They deserve all the help they can get!

Thank you in advance if you do.. (ps – I’m not on commission :-) )

  • clr-1976, what a sweet story of your animal rescue adventures. Any positive change that happens in ones life causes you to feel like its always been that way, so there’s no thought even of how long the change has been occurring. It’s a present progressive, fulfillment today and ongoing thing. What was doesn’t matter anymore. (even if what was was this morning) And to comment on the eating normally during pregnancy things people would say, when I had my blood drawn for the routine prenatal workups during my pregnancies, my labs would always come back stellar with great iron levels too. During pregnancy often times anemia kicks in, even if one is not predisposed. And we all know what the medical community thinks one should eat to boost iron levels. Knowing I was a non-meat eater, the nurses were amazed and said, “well, you must be doing something right”.... ya think? ; )

all the videos at the Humane Society website do a good job representing the cruelty of the “meat industry”.... http://video.hsus.org/?fr_chl=90b8416730090124a…
And (sorry to be repetitive) I’ve said it on a few GR forums – but I think the one that James Cromwell narrates, titled “Overlooked” really says it all.

  • woohoo! oh my gosh so my younger brother decided this morning that he is officially a vegetarian! (one step at a time!) I find that soo exciting! now for the rest of the family… lOl and greenghost:thanks for the link, I’m gonna check those out!

  • Yes, Meet Your Meat is very powerful indeed! In ‘03, I was eating a mostly vegetarian diet. I started researching animal cruelty more and stumbled upon the Meet Your Meat video. I remember the day vividly. I was sitting at my computer, eating a regular Cesar salad, and watching the video. I got about 4 minutes into the video before running to the bathroom to puke. I’ve been vegan ever since. There is no going back for me. There is no humane way to murder an animal.

Just watched meet your meat. Ok, thats it, now I’m official. That will haunt me for a long time.

    Also found this one, its realistic but doesnt show graphic images, its actually very inspirational and brought a tear (or two) to my eye by the end. Its called;

VEGAN. For the People. For the Planet. For the Animals

Just went to youtube. The last I watched was ” PETA fur, leather, wool” Couldn’t finish it. Oh God forgive us.

  • ohhhhhh… I know it’s so terrible and disgusting! :( I just hate the feeling of being powerless. just knowing that the majority of people still eat meat not realizing what’s going on!! and I hate how I feel like I’ve been brainwashed my whole life by the dairy/meat industries! ugh. it turns my stomach, and I’ve been praying about it!!

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

Our power is our choices! Just by stopping eating meat and stopping using products tested on animals, products that have animal derived ingredients and buying anything that is made with animal skins. It is hard not to feel powerless I know but we are. Keep making the right choices and that is your power. Tell your friends and family too!

There are people who know what is going on and honestly don’t care unforunately – I think it is all those hormones they have been consuming or they have just been brainwashed that animals don’t matter and have no rights.

Being a animal friendly person is SO much more excepted than it used to be. People are changing. I see the change myself. I can’t believe how much more veg friendly stuff there is compared to 20 years go when I switched. So, I know by this that there is change happening.

I really think that one day there will be some sort of horrible virus that will effect the meat industry that will force most people to become vegetarian. Not that I want a horrible virus but things really seem to be pointing in that sort of direction.

  • You may not be able to help the whole world Chelsey09, but you sure helpd me. I just watched the video "Meet Your Meat", now I'm totally convinced and convicted not only for health reasons, but for moral and environmental to give up all meat for good. Thank you.

  • vegan for the earth, and the animals. then secondly, raw vegan for my health.

I have a couple friends who might be ready to watch Meet Your Meat. First i'm teaching them the happy side of veganism, by having them meet other vegans and eat amazing vegan food. Next this video will do the trick!
