Fruitarianism

I am contemplating Fruitarianism but I remember reading that "fruits do not contain enough calcium and other alkaline minerals to maintain proper health over the long term. To provide enough minerals in the diet, we need a sufficient quantity and variety of green (leafy) vegetables"... What are you thoughts on this? Thank you :)

  • I agree with what you have said, we need a mixture of all different foods, including greens.

Maybe you could up your fruits but still remain balanced by just lowering your fats, but keeping greens and a tiny bit of nuts or seeds...?

I understand where you are coming from. I realize that fats bog me down a bit, and from reading Raw Canadian and some other 811ers, I am tempted to do that program. But I also fear for my digestive tract. I have heard some fruitarians have a hard time digesting foods if they ever want to stop being fruitarian. Makes sense, the bowel could get lazy.

I am going to try to eat fruit in the day and then at night greens and some fats, just to keep omega threes coming in, and other things we do indeed need. In small quantities.

  • eating a diet of fruit supplemented by greens is the greatest thing you could do for your body. try this instead.

  • HI there,

I know of several long term fruitarians that claim to be very healthy. I think that access to really high quality, locally grown in mineralized soil, ripe fruit might make all the difference. Most of the very long term fruitarians I've heard of live in the tropics.

I only eat greens when I crave them, usually a couple of times of week. The rest of the time I eat all fruit and some fruity veggies (tomatoes, cukes, bell peppers, avocados are all botanically fruits)

You might want to check out the following fruity websites:

I LOVE fruit and could eat very high fruit if I could afford it but I do feel better with higher quantities of greens. and at this point i need fat in my diet as well. if you listen to your body and experiment you can see how you feel. my body tells me very quickly if i skip my greens!

  • As what chilove said, I thought fruitarians ate everything that was botanically a fruit, not just what we think of when we think of fruit. This includes tomatoes, bell peppers, avocados; pretty much anything with a seed. This eliminates the sugar issue.

Though, I do concurr with Victoria Boutenko's conclusion that greens are the proper food for human beings. I also concurr with her that we are also supposed to consume insects, as in the wild primative humans would not likely have washed and sorted the insects out of their greens. They probably consumed a bit of soil on their produce as well, which further mineralized their diets.

I am not about to go out and eat bugs, though. Just saying, theoretically.

  • Thank you all so very much! You have helped immensely :)

  • I'm interested in people's opinions about this subject actually. I'm neither for or against. I think we as individuals have to make the decision by listening to our bodies as to what is appropriate for us to consume.

    Definition of fruitarian........

Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant, that is: foods that can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds[6]. Many do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so[7], and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds[8]. Additionally, there are fruitarians who believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten.[9] Others eat seeds and some cooked foods.[10]

Ok I remember discussing this with a guy I knew and I am not writing it verbatim obviously becoz it was many moons ago but it goes something like this ...he said that Arnold Ehret did this test on himself--he ate a SAD diet for 3 months and cut his forearm--very deep and documented his findings...alot of pain, tremendous bleeding had to hold pressure for over an hour to stop bleeding enough to bandage and took a long time to heal. He then did a vegetarian diet for 3 months and did same thing...less pain and only slight pressure needed for few minutes stopped the bleeding less and it took about a week to heal. He did a fruitarian diet and said he felt NO pain, the blood rose to top of surface on the cut and did not need pressure and ultimately healed in 2 days. How much of that story was embellished i don't know...but it is pretty much the discussion we had back then.

When discussing food, the term "fruit" usually refers to just those plant fruits that are sweet. Botanically, though, some foods commonly called "vegetables" including the bell pepper, tomato, and cucumber as well as nuts and grains, are fruits. Fruitarians use differing definitions of what is considered a "fruit." There's a guy Richard Blackman [he used to have videos on YouTube] he is strick fruitarian...only fruit, no water and no supplements. He seems very knowledgeable and his body is PHENOMENAL. Almost makes me wanna do only fruit BUT I'm a foodie so I wouldn't feel right excluding all my lovely veggies. We have become so close LOL

Well hope this arouses some contemplation and further discussions.

    Peace

    Lo~

  • sounds very interesting, I would be nervous I wouldn't get enough variety/minerals/vitamins. But, I could definitely go fruitarian in terms of my love for fruit - I could eat so much each day! I have to stop myself from eating too much fruit, as I will sometimes develop sores/cankers on my tongue and inside my mouth. I've been contemplating doing a candida cleanse which would negate my love of fruit for a short while - not sure if I can commit to that :-)

Re: Candida- consider trying the "reducing fat" method of killing candida. Fats make the body slower at processing sugar so candida overgrow. Check out 80/10/10. Totally changed my life!

  • fruits are cleansers and vegetables are builders for the cells. i think we need a good balance of both but with a little more veggies so that we can keep building cells instead of just cleaning and stripping them. i agree with carnap. i think its best to eat fruits during the day and veggies at night.

  • You can track (loosely) your nutritional/vitamin/mineral data at nutritionaldata.com

  • Listen to this interview - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/LIVE-LIFE-RAW

Its an interview with Dr Fred Bisci , he has been raw vegan for over 40 years,

He says ' Some of the worst disasters i have ever seen are from people over doing the fruits "

He is in his 80's and very fit and healthy, and certainly knows his stuff.

    Its a great interview.

  • over doing fruit would have to mean consuming 9,000 calories and being a sedentary being.

seriously, stop knocking the food that was designed to fuel us, i'm sick of that shit. overdoing fats is much much easier, and much much worse, and this whole board is practically doing it, especially if they live their lives by these recipes I see posted on here.

  • lol yeah im sure you know maore than a 80year old DR who specialises in curing and helping people with raw Foods, who has also been a raw vegan for Over 40years.

Have you even listened to the interview ? its well worth a listen.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Find out what's best for your body right now!

At the moment, my body doesn't do well on too much fruit. I try and do what's best for my body at this moment (and that can change weekly or monthly etc). For the past year, I have found that i'm at my best when i have moderate amounts of sweet fruit (at most, 64oz of fruit/green smoothies and a couple pieces of fruit beyond that). I also eat non sweet fruit, sprouts, 1lb+ greens, 30% fats.

If I eat more fruit, some weeks i'm okay but some weeks i develop terrible candida overgrowth (females - we all know what THAT means).

  • you're a high fat dieter, the candida keeps alive because you have them paired. don't eat any overts and eat your fruit. you'll see that this doesn't happen.

  • how the hell did you get arrogance out of what I said? i was speaking in a general sense. I'm simply telling you like it is, paul. You're childish, i'm not trying to outsmart anyone, in fact, i'm trying to make things much more simple. i'll give the interview a listen after todays lunch + exercise.

If i had listened to some guru telling me to eat only fruit, or eat no fruit, or this or that - I WOULD NOT BE RAW right now. I AM SUCCESSFULLY RAW for 1 year (99% raw) because I listen to my body. You heard me right - my body. I don't follow what other people say is best for their body, because they aren't me.

Lilou, and to all those new to raw who are reading the forums - take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. See what works for your own body, and be willing to adjust your diet as often as necessary to make it work.

  • eating cooked food worked fine for my body, i had zero problems eating high fat sad food. Although it did effect my training. 30 percent of calories from fat is just simply not acceptable if you're looking for running your body at an optimal level (assuming this is one of the reasons you picked raw foodism). There is a difference between 'working' and thriving, and 'working' and damaging.

  • Winona - you would enjoy the interview then
