Being Raw with out going broke

I've been RAW now for some time, (6 years), and at first trying all the recipes I thought , "I'm going to go broke eating this way", but then slowly it became apparent that eating raw you feel fuller on less and that I would go broke if I ate gourmet all the time even if I was a SAD eater. Then slowly from there I found that eating an apple or a tomato, or just a handful of nuts filled me up. Slowly but surely the idea of having to make meals and prepare things all the time started to slide away like bad habits.

Ohh I still make those fancy recipes, but I've found that like Juliano says "When your pantry is filled with the right ingredients your ready". Ok maybe not word for word what he says but what I figured out if that when I have the staples on hand it works, and most of the time I can substitute for other things. I've even started making tea using just warm water not boiling hot. I do fall back on SAD once in a while, but the more the years roll by the more I stick to my RAW much the happiness of my body and stomach.

And these days being RAW is easier than ever, the recipes are becoming so finely tuned that most of my SAD friends can't tell a difference other than there eating vegan. But the excitement and adventure of a whole new way of eating, of living is still here and the thing is, you don't have to go broke. When you were SAD you didn't eat creme brulee and prime rib every night did you? Of course not, there are simple meals and not so simple meals.

Ohhh but those fancy recipes do but call to me! But you know what? I've found I'm perfectly happy eating for lunch a nice yummy apple with a bit of almond butter. Delicious

My meal plan today

Breakfast - Mint Tea and a few Cashews

Lunch - Apple with bit of Almond butter

Snack - Few cherry tomatoes and almonds

Dinner - Pumpkin bread and mock cream cheese

Snack - bit of cashes

Mint Tea

Total cost around 6 or 7 dollars. If I had used pecans and picked them myself even cheaper.

So, about how much do you spend a day eating raw?

Wow, that's not a lot. I spend a lot more than that, maybe $15-20. But I do est A LOT more fruit than you and most fruit are not in season right now, so it's a lot more expensive than it was in the summer.

Hi Bellasera...I spend about $30-40 a week on fruit and veggies. A little more if I am out of stock of nuts and have to pick those up. I try to buy the fruit that is on sale and any inexpensive organic I find. You are right, after so long your body feels more content on less. I love RAW because I go home after work and I'm not even hungry for dinner most days. I eat less but am so filled up with good food and nutrients, my body is content! Since going raw , I have yet to get the 'shakes' from being too hungry. One day I was out and about for practically the entire day being busy and was not able to stop and eat. I realized at the end of the day, I did not even feel I needed to eat. Of course I did, tho :) But still, what a Great feeling!!

Bellasera since you have been raw for 6 yrs, do you mind me asking what is your weight? I know one woman who has been raw for about 4 yrs, and she is less than 100 lbs. I am also very petite but definetly not under 100 lbs. I am worried about what I will look like in a couple years if I stick with Raw...

I'd be broke but I use food stamps and all other State aid you could imagine. Gotta love the nanny state! Socialism rules.

I wish! I have been raw for about 2 years. I was 100% raw now im about 80%. I totally agree with needing less food but I spend at least $150 a week on grocieries. I also usually purchase a salad or salad ingredients for lunch. I buy all organic so it adds to the cost. I still have yet to be able to live inexpensivly on raw foods.

I spend 200 dollars a week for groceries, but I'm buying for 5 people. All of us eat a lot of fruit, and the rest of the family eats meat, pastas and rice.

I think you can spend smaller amounts if you eat what is in season. Any time I see out of season fruits on sale, I buy a ton.

Bellasera, I know some days I eat very little, but I make up for it the next day. Yesterday, all I ate was a smoothie, some cashew cheese with some baby carrots, then for dinner I ate two cups of baby spinach with half of a tomato, and some cashew cheese as my dressing.

Every time I go 100% raw, I end up with next to no appetite after a while, and I forget to eat. I know this is a recipe for a future binge on junk if I keep eating like that. So, today I am making sure I eat. I end up grazing all day usually.

I have been working to cut down my shopping bills recently. I've found that I'm just buying whatever fruit is on offer and trying to eat more simply in a bid to cut costs. I only buy nuts/seeds when they're on a 2 for 1 offer, etc.

Having said that, it was my birthday the other week and I went to a lovely health food shop and treated myself to a few expensive items I've been wanting to try for ages. I was like a kid in a candy shop! My BF thinks I'm so sad for getting excited over spirulina, maca, carob pods, raw choc bars, etc.

  • I spend about 25-30 euros per week on fruits and vegs.

Nuts, seeds, olive oil, raw cacao, himalaya salt are more expensive but I buy them from time to time.
