How much fresh produce do you all eat per day/week/month? (I'm trying to draw up grocery budget)

jakkrabbitjakkrabbit Raw Newbie

My sister has become a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and I'm going raw vegan, and we haven't the faintest clue how to do our grocery budget for the next month because we don't know how much produce is the average to go through! Help! How much fresh produce do each of you eat per day/week/month? If some of you can even break it down to how many bananas, mangoes, oranges, apples, heads of lettuce, etc you go through in a day or week, that would be fantastic so we have a ballpark idea to start with...

I tend to do one main shop per week, then buy a few bits and bobs as and when I need to.

At the moment I tend to buy the following fresh produce:

    Few bags of apples

    Few big bunches of bananas

    Few bags of carrots

    4-8 Sharon fruit

A couple of lettuce and a big bag of spinach

    Two packs of frozen blueberries

    Two cucumbers

    Red, yellow, orange bell peppers

    Celery

    Punnet of cherry toms

    bag of lemons

    Chunk of fresh ginger

    A couple sweet potatoes

    Pack of dates

    Bag of raisins

Big marrow or pack of zuchinni

My BF is not raw so this list is just what I eat and I'm not 100% raw so do also buy other non fresh produce. Other typical stuff I buy (every couple of weeks):

    Quinoa

    Buckwheat

    Pumpkin and sunflower seeds

    Walnuts and almonds

    Hemp and linseeds

    Sun dried toms

    Chickpeas

Grocery list on weekend (appx) for what is in season now:

1 BIG bunch bananas - yellow without too many brown spots...I tend to eat them all at the end of the week when they are ripe (lots of brown)

    1 pack dates

    1 container raisins

    3 pears

    2 mango

    4+ lemons

    2 limes

    box of clementines

    1 pineapple

    5 oranges

I would get apples, but I"m allergic

Other fruit (not listed, but if something looks good I'll buy it)

    2 bunches kale

1 bag of 3-4 romaine heads

    1 bulb of fennel

    1 red onion

    4 avacado

    1/2 head cabbage

    bag of mung sprouts

    3 zucchini

    2 cucumber

    5lb bag of carrots

Spinach (either bunch or box of baby)

    raw olives (not purist raw)

    raw sauerkraut (not purist raw)

These are just approximations. I eat A LOT. I think a lot of us do actually. This usually lasts the week.

Things I have on hand or frozen:

    pecans

    almonds

    cashews

    macadamia nuts

    sunflower seeds

cacao powder and nibs (not considered raw, but I still eat it)

    chia seeds

    buckwheat

    various dried fruit

    various frozen fruit (for variety)

clover, fenugreik, brocooli and other seeds for sprouting

    coconut oil

    raw olive oil

    sea salt

    spices

My husband is not vegan, but he eats a pretty high content raw vegan diet now (yay), so a lot of this is shared.

  • god I don't even know where to start.

    IN A WEEK:

I eat three bananas a day, so I get at least 21 of those a week... so in a bunch of 6, that's about 4 bunches a week

I go through about 3-4 containers of strawberry

    2 pineapples

    7-14 zucchini (depending on size)

    3-6 ears of corn

    2-3 large packages of mushrooms

    tomatoes as necessary...probably 4 a week?

    an onion

    7 carrots

    1-2 bags of spinach

    3-6 avocados

    7 oranges

    2-6 granny smith apples

random other fruits...depending on my mood

    a few jalapenos

    bunch of cilantro

other stuff (not necessarily on a weekly basis):

    flax

    dates

    agave

    cashews

    almonds

    olive oil

    coconut oil

    cacao

    sea salt

    spices

    raisins

    sundried tomatoes

    nutritional yeast (very rarely)

Larabars (can be easily made, but I'm always lazy hahaha)

Sometimes I get broccoli, kale, green beans, peas, etc. I get something different for greens every week to keep things interesting, and I don't overdo the greens as it makes me nauseous.

    god I eat a lot...

i eat so much so it's a lot of food.

    3 pineapples

    15 apples

i eat like 5-10 bananas a day so i buy more as needed

    a few cantaloupes

    2 bags of grapes

    lbs of spinach (like 3)

    4 heads of lettuce

    big bag of oranges

    3 bags frozen berries

    3-6 cucumbers

    4 big tomatoes

    3 avocados

    bag of carrots

    2 heads broccoli

    1 onion

um i can't think of anything else at the moment but this list changes as my mood changes and what's in the store.

  • the59soundthe59sound Raw Newbie

this is my diet for two weeks.

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

    per day:

    5 or so cherimoyas

    5 macintosh apples

    2-3 navel oranges

a few packs of raw frozen acai pulp with raw honey or maple syrup

    probiotics and stuff

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

jakkrabbit, it's per week!!! haha i don't think i could eat THAT much in one day... i wish i could buy things in bulk bins but my grocery store doesn't do that.

  • jakkrabbitjakkrabbit Raw Newbie

I've just heard so much about rawers eating massive amounts of fruits of veggies per day that I started to wonder if this was what was meant by a 'massice amount'...lol

  • jakkrabbit,

I think you've already got some idea. You can also go to the "What you ate today" topic and see what and how much people are eating each day.

  • jakkrabbitjakkrabbit Raw Newbie

Thanks for that - I'm sure I'll really get a good sense of what we need to start with based on that topic thread!

i tend to just stock up when i'm on empty but i will try to guess here:

    fruit:

    4 apples

    2 bunches of bananas

    1 bag frozen mangos

    2-3 bags frozen berries

    sometimes a few young coconuts

    several lemons

    pack of dates

    veggies:

1-2 bunches carrots (shared with my dogs)

    1-2 bunches celery

    2 red peppers

    the rest varies a lot!

    greens:

    1 cup sprouts

    2 heads lettuce

    1 pound spinach

3-4 heads of kale or chard or both

    1/2 bunch parsley

not gonna go into seeds and stuff since i tend to buy that more monthly.

With the current season and being on a limited budget I in a week go through (depending on mood/physical activity):

    Fruit:

2 - 8 pound bags of navel oranges (staple)

1 - 8 pound bag of Grapefruit (staple)

    3 or so Cantaloupe

    16-20 Bananas (staple)

    1-2 Pineapple

Maybe a few mango for splurge

A few avocados if on sale or I am in a salad mood

    1-2 pounds of raisins (staple)

1 pound frozen wild blueberries (though I haven't got these for a while)

    Veggies:

3-4 Bunches of dark greens usually kale but last time I got turnip greens since the kale wasn't good (staple)

1 pound baby salad greens (if I'm in a salad mood I can go through two of these a week)

    1-2 pounds of carrots

1 Bag of celery (not that often though)

    Nuts/Seeds/other

    1-2 pounds sunflower seeds (staple)

    0.5-1 pound flax seed (staple)

    0.5-1 pound pumpkin seeds (staple)

    Walnuts

    Dried Coconut

Oats (every other day or so)

Buckwheat (just started eating and I love it , this I will probably be eating a pound a week soon)

Nutritional Yeast (not raw but I'm addicted right now)

Tempeh (not raw but awesome in avocado-dulse-tempeh- baby green salad!)

I look for sales and compare prices and try to buy as organic as possible but I don't have all the money in the world so a majority of things aren't organic so I can grab them on sale like oranges/grapefruit 8 pounds for $3.88 and cantaloupe for $1. But I try to use something like raisins to sweeten smoothies because they are cheap and organic rather than using more conventional fruit. Bananas are always organic for me and usually my seeds are too. I am looking for a job and I also plan on having a big garden (lots of greens) this summer to cut costs in the future.
