Hing is a spice very commonly used in east indian cooking. It is made of a resin aka asefoteida (sp?). It gives a flavour that resembles onions.

I can't believe how satisfying and comforting this soup was. I didn't have hing so I used a clove of garlic and put in 2 tbsp of nutritional yeast and some flax oil and heated gently - and it was yummy! I will keep this in my repertoire of favorite recipes.
