Hi Hydrohawk! I am a marathoner as well. I am currently training for my second marathon and just completed an 18 miler last weekend. This is the first raw marathon I will have run (i’ve only been doing this raw thing for 3 weeks but I have been vegan for 3 months). So far my runs have been better and with better recovery than when I was eating SAD. I am not training with any products like Gu or another gel or shotbok, but when I run I make sure to hydrate with water and also pop some fruit and nuts as well. Larabars work great because they are raw fruit and nut bars, or I have just popped some dates and almonds.
I think one of the reasons my training has been so much better is, because as you know, long distance running is just as much mental as it is physical. But with this new raw lifestyle I have more mental clarity and enjoyment for all activities that it really helps with the mental toughness of running, especially when you get tired.
I don’t do marathons, but i do cycle a few hundred miles a week, and I like easily eaten fruits for energy—bananas, apples, tangerines. A small amount of nuts work well, too, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower. I don’t like Gu and these gel products because they’re engineered foods, and I trust whole foods over dreamed up lab concoctions.
ooh I forgot to include this www.runningraw.com He is awesome!!
OMG Allison, how could you forget that web address, seems like that is right up my alley! thank you SO much… I just got SO excited!!!
Hahah, sorry about that :) Tim is an awesome athlete and his site is helpful in so many ways.
I’m training for my third marathon and although during my second I was transitioning to raw, this is my first one caffeine free and I’m nervous for that. I started carrying banana on my runs to replace the gu I use to use. I like to drink some coconut water too. Any ideas for hoe to get that little “get up and go” feeling pre run without tea or coffee I’d love to hear
i’m currently training for my first raw marathon and was wondering the same thing..what do i take for fuel during the long runs..i spoke with a friend today who is a raw vegan ultrarunner and he suggests packing some dates and for a drink blend a banana with celery (potassium & electrolytes)..coconut water on it’s own is loaded with electrolytes..i didn’t want to do the processed GU thing and it’s nice to see other runners on here too!
