Here’s a site with CSA locations. I’ve found farms on this site, and in local newspapers, mostly. Where do you live? There may be a website or group dedicated to “green” stuff and they’re usually a good resource, too.
Good luck!
Thank you, I found a couple that are close to my area. I live in metropolitan NJ so I figured there wouldn’t be many but there is, in fact, a good handful to choose from. I’m going to check them out this week. :)
Also look for pick-your-own farms, farmer’s market, and roadside (farm connected) stands. IN addition to localharvest, give your state department of agriculture http://www.state.nj.us/agriculture/ a call and the local county extension office http://njaes.rutgers.edu/county/ – they can point you to local producers. NJ is called the Garden State for a reason; you should indeed find plenty.
crickster – Metropolitan NJ? Where? I’m in Hudson County right outside NYC.
Kayell – Thanks for the websites, I’ll check them out.
Kait – Bergen County, also right outside NYC!
Wow, small world! When you say “boot camp”, you mean with the military? I’m from Waldwick originally, right near Ridgewood.
Yup, with the Navy. Right now I’m wearing my “property of the US Navy” shirt they gave me when I enlisted. Quaint, ain’t it?
I’m from Hackensack, just actually came from Waldwick for a job interview. Out of curiosity (I’m a raw newbie, you see) how do you find eating raw is here in the city? Being vegan alone def makes it difficult to hang out with friends.
The Navy? That’s fantastic.
I’m actually a fruitarian, which keeps things really simple. I have a hectic schedule and don’t have the time to make gourmet raw dishes or even prepare salads on most days. I just stick to mono-meals of fruit.
I buy organic when I can, but mostly conventional fruits. I figure eating conventional fruit is still eating fruit.
I’m from Bergen County. My parents live there, but I’m living at college right now at my second year in Hudson County :-)
I live in Monmouth County!
Wow, small world. What college are you going to, Kait, if you don’t mind me asking?
I was studying business at Boston University in Boston, MA. I transferred half-way through my first year to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ to pursue computer science.
edit: Are you in college?
Not currently, I just finished a semester at Bergen Community (double majoring in creative writing & botany.) I’m heading off to boot camp soon so I’m kind of savoring my last few months of freedom, haha.
And, funny, I just moved here from MA. :)
Wow, that’s awesome. I have to admire your willpower.
you could try craigslist.
