No never had that happen. I’d say just go for it and get some and don’t worry about the possibility of it being purple. If you get a purple one smell it and have a taste. If it tastes or smells bad don’t eat it. They taste soooo good and the water is divine, Just jump right in and try some!
On gliving.com they had a huge discussion on this very topic. It said that purple means-young, white-not as young, gray-a little older. Sometimes they’ll even look a little pink inside. I agree with Zoe, smell first, then try the water, if the water tastes good then that’s what will let you know how the coconut meat is.
