  • have you tried Braggs?

  • Braggs is stil soy though isn’t it?

Just replace the soy sauce with a little salt.

  • yeah it’s made from soybeans, monark is the soy the problem or is it a sodium issue or what? you could try mixing some colgin (Liquid smoke) with a little water and maybe some sea salt. Colgin is not raw but it is vegan.

If you can’t have soy, then salt and water is usually an OK substitute. I was allergic to soy for a few years and found most recipes were fine without the sauce. For a more savory flavor, use the liquid from marinating mushrooms—you can even just marinate mushrooms overnight with some salt and water and see what happens. Mushrooms have a nice earthy flavor that is certainly different from soy but still flavorful. Or you can look for a soy-free miso (there are a few out there) and use this blended with water and salt. Good luck! PS I’ve made the onion bread without the soy sauce and substituting salt and it was still great. Don’t be afraid to be creative!

  • If you are looking more for that deep earthy salty goodness that you might get from a good soy sauce I would recomend south river miso’s chickpea miso.
I’m allergic to soy but I stumbled across this stuff and I absolutely lurv it.

  • You should check out these recipes by Russel James that were posted on the website gliving.tv.com. He has two recipes for bread and neither one uses soy sauce. I’ve not made them but I have tried other recipes by him and have truly enjoyed them.

Here they are if interested (one is for Mediterranean Almond Bread the other Sun-Dried Tomato & Herb Bread Sandwich):
