I have many yoga DVDs-power, ashtanga, vinyassa flow are my forite types of yoga and my all time favorite DVD is Yoga Shakti with Shiva Rae. there are 30, 60 and 90 min. practices. Additionally, you can put together your own practice, by selecting the poses you want and hitting “play”. Her cues are great and her voice is very soothing. I find some irritating with continuous chatter.
I second Shiva Rae’s DVD, it’s my favorite!
I think Richard Freeman is my favorite teacher of all time, but I’m not familiar with his videos – there might be another who is better as a video instructor.
But I do have to say, ashtanga is super intense if you’ve never done yoga before. I jumped into it fairly quickly when I started my yoga practice, and even though I was going to live classes with good teachers, I think I was really lucky not to injure myself. I certainly picked up a lot of bad habits that came from not having a strong understanding of the poses before I began (because ashtanga is so fast-paced, there isn’t a huge amount of time for adjustment, so unless you have a really vigilant teacher or a very small class, bad habits can stick around a while). Ashtanga is amazing – it totally changed my body and my life. But I think, especially for beginners, it is best in tandem with a class that focuses on alignment (iyengar yoga is wonderful for alignment). I don’t know, though – perhaps the videos take this into account? This has just been my experience.
Good luck with your search!
Love Shiva Rae dvds. Gorgeous production and solid instruction/pacing.
Shiva Rae is one of my favorites as well.
Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga is really great, the DVD has 3 classes at 3 different levels so it’s great for a beginner who will get progressively more adept. He has a very calming voice, the pacing is very good, and he doesn’t talk constantly in the video which I’ve found to be annoying in other DVD’s.
