B-12

honeywaterhoneywater Raw Newbie

OKAY! So, I’m anemic. What do I do for B-12? It’s one of the factors keeping me from being raw. Everyone says it’s in dirt and stuff, but I’m really not down with not scrubbing my vegetables that aren’t even organic.

Do any raw supplements exist?

Thanks!

I use nutritional yeast. I sprinkle it on my meals, add it to my homemade salad dressings, & use it in recipes for raw cheeses, dips, & pate’s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutritional_yeast

  • Hey Honeywater – anemia is awful; sorry to hear that but take heart. I have had the same issues and treated it successfully with several things. Sublingual B12 tablets to start, E3 Live in my juices and shakes every morning, sometimes Spirulina or chlorella tablets, and, as brownies said, nutritional yeast. My most favourite (not a spelling error – I’m Canadian:) recipe with Nutritional yeast is from Sergei and Valya Boutenko’s recipe book “Fresh”. I think it is called “I Can’t Believe It’s Just Cabbage” and all you do is shred a 1/2 head of cabbage and add a dressing of 2 TBSP lemon juice, 2 TBSP grapeseed/olive oil, 2 TBSP nutritional yeast, 1/2 tsp sea salt. Wow – I can eat a whole salad bowl of this one!

Good luck and give yourself time to heal.

I also have nutritional yeast, it isn’t raw but it is vegan. As you mention b12 supplements may also not be raw, but better to take a tiny supplement or NY than not go raw I think. I read some where recently an article that detailed a raw vegan man who went b12 deficient whilst eating veg etc that had not been scrubbed so don’t worry too much about washing veg etc as it does very little to help anyway.

  • To honeywater,

Bluegreen algae is a really good source for b12, as well as other good things. It comes in a capsule form and a really good brand is Klamath’s Best. Its organic and from what I can tell on their website, its raw. (They describe the manufacturing process). http://www.klamathvalley.com/ I mostly like this brand because its local for me, but you could also shop around if you want.

have you ever tried going raw (focusing on all that is green) and seeing if it was still a factor?

I don’t know if I’m deficient in B-12 as I haven’t had my levels checked, but I have been feeling really sluggish for the last couple months, despite being 100% raw. So, I’d rather be on the safe side and take a supplement. I just started taking Max Stress B Nano-Plex ( http://www.naturalhealthyconcepts.com/max-stres… ) today, and I’ve already noticed an increase in my energy. I’ve heard that it is also recommended by Gabriel Cousens. I like the fact that it contains all of the B-complex vitamins, not just B12.

    Good luck with your health!

  • good call on all the B vitamins together – while taking a certain one on its own can be helpful for specific issues or deficiencies, they really do work best all together. if you throw off your b-vitamin ratios, you can still have problems with energy, etc. i take supplements even if they’re not raw.. i figure it’s better (for me, anyway) to aim for optimal health instead of legalistic standards. that said, some people dont feel right compromising at all. and i believe there are some raw supplements out there, some new ones. check out this link: http://www.vitamincodes.com

  • Also, I read that if you eat foods high in Iron (a LOT of greens) during the time you are eating B12 it actually blacks the B12 from absorbing into your body. So you get almost no benefit if you take them at the same time.

    Check this website out: http://www.veganoutreach.org/health/B122002.pdf

itll tell you all you need to know.

Ever since reading this information I started supplementing, and have felt MUCH more healthier, and even more healthier taking them and Im raw!
