I recently purchased a 5200. It came with a tamper (plastic). It's designed so you can tamp down the contents as the VitaMix is running, without danger of getting in the moving blades. Click here for a picture of the tamper -- in front of the VitaMix.
Thanks for your response, but that isn't what I am referring to. Here a picture of the Vitamix I purchased and the wooden stick is placed in front: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSAA:US:31&Item=350086891429#ebayphotohosting
If that link doesn't work, this should: http://i21.ebayimg.com/02/i/001/03/99/47a3_1.JPG
I still think it's the tamper. Completely assemble the VitaMix. Then put the long end of the "stick" down into the carafe from the opening in the top. My guess is that it will not reach all the way to the blades. The cross piece at the top of the stick serves as a "stop" so the stick cannot fall all the way down into the carafe. The newer tampers are shaped with two stop points to accommodate a 32 oz. and a 64 oz. carafe.
Actually, I believe you're right. I just tried it out and the wooden stick did help with the blending.
I'm glad the mystery is solved. That's one of the things I really like about this community -- others are always willing to jump in and help solve mysteries.
PS: There are no stupid questions. I always tell my students the only stupid question is the one not asked. Of course, the exception is the one that I've answered a dozen times in the past hour while the student was talking, writing a note to his girlfriend, etc. I still answer the question, though (or ask another student to answer it for me).
