A bit of a demannding question, but I know my psychiatrist is going to convince me to go on some meds for some mild bipolar with some recent traumatic stress/violence I experienced. Can someone give me some arguments against it? I'm sure it'll be my choice in the end... but nonetheless.

Thanks

Well, one of the arguments is that the side affects can be awful. One of the side affects can be suicidal thoughts which is very dangerous. if you look it up you will find many studies show there is not much affectiveness for some people. and they can addictive. but you are better off trying to find someone who is more open to alternative methods and treating you with those rather than trying to convince someone who is close-minded.

Your best bet is to do some research... Here are some links to folks that are researching the brain and using nutritional approaches.

    * http://www.ultrawellness.com/blog/ultramind-solution-heal-your-brain

    * http://www.ultramind.com/ (same person, Dr. Hyman as the ultrawellness link)

    * http://www.pbs.org (search on keyword "brain")

This should get you started on learning how the brain works and nutritional approaches for supporting well being. Pretty amazing stuff.

Also, a whole body approach might provide a solution. Most likely the mild bipolar is not your only symptom going on. You might have an issue with a system that is stealing resources from your brain (a "higher" priority for resources than your brain, thus your brain is deprived of what it needs showing "symptoms" there... "Steeling from Peter to pay Paul"). If you give your body quality, fundamental nutrition (what it needs), your body will maintain, protect, and regulate itself.

    Happy exploring.

I think it's scary how lazy shrinks are getting. Those drugs were never intended to replace good therapy, but that is how they are used now. I see family doctors, who have no business treating depression, prescribe them as if they were birth control pills.

Nothing replaces a good psychologist/therapist. If this guy can't treat you without insisting on drugs, get another shrink. He sucks.

In studies, 5htp (an amino acid) were found to be just as affective as anti depressants. Also, in studies testing anti depressants against the placebo effect, they tested as having the same amount of benefits.

Fasting would also probably help. I heard a saying that nobody stays unhappy after a 4 day fast... I've never fasted though.

  • Hi Carnap,

I am currently on antidepressants due to many reason of my choice, however I am now at the stage where I am really wanting to get off them. The realization of having chemicals in my body is hitting me hard and fast.

My suggestion for you will sound incredibly esoteric and possibly disgust you but if you can remain open minded, you may find that you can cure yourself. I suggest that you research 'Urine Therapy'. It's the act of drinking one's own morning midstream. I too was disgusted by the mere thought of this but after conditioning myself to the act and researching all the benefits and cure's I have been convinced that we are all getting scammed by the medical world and in fact we are all able to cure ourselves.

Here is one site if you are interested but there are plenty more. You need to sift through the good and the bad.

I have also just finished ready 'my own perfect medicine'. It give a convincing over view with scientific evidence and testimonials. It's poorly written in my opinion with many many typo's, I believe it was printed on a very small budget. Aside from that, there is a world of knowledge between those pages.

Amazon also have a heap of books on this subject. It's worth a look.

Hope I've help and not disgusted you or others reading.

When I read Conscious Eating by Gabriel Cousens it was the first time that I really started to understand depression. Many of my family members suffer from it and reading his book has totally changed the way I think about it for the better. I would highly recommend reading his book as it goes over so much more then just depression.

I have heard that pharmaceuticals can have heavy metals in them and this in the long run would only make depression worse not better. If you can find a doctor where you live that i willing to help you explore offer options I would say go with that. If you really need the medication to help you feel better so that you can make positive changes in your life then do what you need to do and hopefully it will only be temporary as you gain your health.

Best wishes to you on your journey!
