Olive oil...I am so pissed off at this!

Ok so apprantly only 4% of the olive oils in the United States are truly "real" extra virgin olive oil. The rest are blends of hazelnut and canola oils colored with chlorophyl, which makes me really angry. If you would like, here is the link to the story:

This was also on the news. You can find a lot of information about this.

Anyhow, what I wanted to know now that I can't trust the olive oil I buy at the store is, does anyone know what olive oil I can buy that will truly really be extra virgin cold pressed olive oil? I mean, is there a list of companies that can be trusted? Cuz I'm not exactly finding this list on the internet, and I guess this is happening so often that it is really hard to tell who you can and cannot trust.

Bariani makes a truly raw stone-crushed olive oil. Also, Spectrum seems to be reputable. They don't go above 120 degrees during any part of the process. LOL.

Plenty of online sources sell raw olive oil. I like Eliki -

Our home town brand (along w/Gallo Winery) is Sciabica's Olive Oil. I would happily recommend for a great quality cold-pressed oil. The flavored one's are fantastic!

I also buy the Napa valley brand and I have found it to be just as good as the super expensive raw store brands.

Just stay away from conventional grocery store go to the hippy co-ops and such and you should be safe.

Napa Valley's sunflower oil is awesome too and cheaper than olive oil. I use it for anything I don't want to taste like olive, especially sweet things.

  • People are messing with my olive oil- is nothing sacred? I love my olive oil. Will have to check out some of the reliable sources for the oil listed on the thread.

I also heard any olive oil that is cold pressed and made here in the US should have been processed under 120 degrees. The CEO from Spectrum supposedly helped to push through this regulation.
