Hi guys -
I've recently (in the past week) started making about one litre of hazelnut mylk a day. I soak the hazelnuts overnight then blend and filter them with whole, organic vanilla bean and about 1 1/2 tbsp of agave syrup. Previous to this I had never consumed raw hazelnuts or hazelnut mylk and had never used or tried agave. Four days ago my entire stomach broke out in hives. Thinking it was a rash or a viral infection (which I have been cursed with over the course of my life - part of why I'm now 100% raw) it never even occurred to me that it could be my new mylk so I kept drinking it. The hives got progressively worse and have now spread to my chest, back, upper arms and neck. It's obvious I'm allergic to either agave or hazelnuts but there is no information about agave allergies on the net that I can find and I've read that every hazelnut allergy begins with with a swollen mouth or lips, which I have never had. Is it possible to even be allergic to agave since it's pure fructose? Or is this such a clear case of hazelnut allergy? I have no problems with other nuts such as almonds, cashews, macadamias and walnuts (although I've never eaten enough walnuts to know for sure) but am strangely severely allergic to sunflower sprouts (no hives, just constricted airway :S)
Help! I need insight!
I live in the middle of nowhere and don't have access to an allergist :S Any non-juice suggestions on how to clear my body of these allergens? (Where I live, I can't juice...long story...:)

I have a friend who is allergic to hazelnuts, she breaks out in hives too. Get an allergy test done to confirm. Adult onset allergies are more common then ever. In just the last year I just found out that I have severe environmental allergies to all trees and grasses, lactose allergy, yeast allergy, and I was diagnosed with cat and dog allergies recently (I had cats and dogs as pets my entire 32 years of life). This is my 2 cents!
I'd like to add my 2 cents. My son has severe allergies including egg and nut. This is what I've been told or found out.
It definitely sounds like a nut allergy, but you can't be sure unless you are tested. BUT, as we've found out, most times people's allergies get worse the more they are exposed to them-so the more you have consumed the mylk, the worse you may be getting and developing an intolerance to it.
Usually the first line of defense the body offers is to vomit what you're allergic to to try and get it out of your system. Since you didn't do that, it accumulates, and can produce a reaction days later. We've been through both.
My son is deathly allergic to eggs. When they did the 'food challenge' on him, he began with hives on his forehead, then legs and torso-not around the mouth. He also had stridor (difficulty breathing bc his throat was swelling). Since he didn't vomit, it stayed in his system another 4 days (it was done on a Friday and he didn't clear til Tuesday!) Though he did have diarrhea all weekend.
Each time since he's come in contact he's immediately thrown whatever it was back up. Then had hives...etc...
Keep benadryl on hand and when you see your doctor ask for a skin test or RAST test (its a blood test), and an epi pen.
From all my reading, hives usually indicate an allergic reaction.
On a side note-we changed to oat milk. I haven't made it yet, but both of my boys drink it and love it.
Terilyn,
I hope your difficulties with Hazelnut milk have settled down. On Saturday afternoon, I had what I thought was food poisoning, but my lips swelled. I realized I also ate some sunflower seed sprouts/greens just before what I thought gave me the food poisoning. I was very ill, threw up and then about 1-2 hours later my upper lip swelled up which had a lot of contact with the sunflower seed sprouts/greens. I'm almost certain this is what I was allergic to, although I have never had a reaction like this before. What was strange was as I was figuring all this out today I was eating sunflower seeds - the swelling was going down on my lip, almost like eating the seeds was doing something to trigger a healing from the allergic reaction to the greens. Bizarre.
Do you know what it is that you reacted to in the sunflower seed sprouts? Do you still eat the seeds, or do you play it safe and avoid them alltogether now?
Thanks for any tips you might have!
