  • three years ago (way before i was raw) i went to the dentist because i had sensitivity and he told me not to brush so hard. gums naturally recede with use because they don’t grow. if we treat them harshly that’s it. my hygienist told me to brush lik…

  • yes. i think it was popularized by ann wigmore in the hippocrates diet. it is made from soaking sprouted wheat berries in water for a few days. you get this fermented LIQUID that add a little bacteria to your raw cheeses. it’s always made me a littl…

  • just to be devil’s advocate here, does anyone NOT believe in fasting? i did a 5 day one and didn’t really feel that it helped me all that much. i’ve heard WATER fasts are the only way to go, and to start out with just a day a week and work it up. th…

  • i just picked up a seemingly dated one at the library that is VERY simple. it’s called “eat smart, eat raw.” it’s also transitional-friendly because it has some “healthier but not raw” recipes in the back. good luck!
  • also, think outside the supermarket. go to localharvest.org to find organic farms (and farmstands), csa (where you buy a share in a farms crops) and co-ops. these are often great deals, much cheaper than the regular supermarket. you may have someone…

  • all i remember ever seeing on tv was in the film notting hill when hugh grant is set up with the fruitarian. she is made out to be a complete nut, shuddering that the cooked carrots were “murdered.” come on!

  • katie- yeah, i suppose i said that, about dogs, because i LOVE the idea that it could work. i think if i had a dog again though, i’d probably make friends with my local cattle farmer and ask if my dog could come around for scraps or something??? tak…

  • ok. i’m here to learn. a lot of things have been mentioned here that i did not know about. ron4540- are ALL fruits waxed. i don’t think the fruits i get at the local fruit stand are since they are local and not shiny. so it is POSSIBLE to avoid wax …

  • i guess no one is answering because these are TOUGH questions. honestly, i’ve never thought about domesticated animals as being abused. these are my gut feelings, which i’m sure will be somewhat overturned by the responses that follow… like children…

  • i have to say i think we are ganging up on lovespeter here. lovespeter- you have a strong point. veganism is clearly defined. however, i think what everyone else is saying is that we don’t believe that if you live in the modern world even YOU could …

  • i agree with all those who stay clear of labels. i think sentences that start with positives are friendlier anyway. instead of i don’t eat dot dot dot, i try to say “i eat raw fruits, raw vegetables, raw nuts and seeds.” this is a problem i see in a…

  • writeeternity—yeah, fruit salad is a great idea. actually i took fruit kebabs to a party a few weeks ago and everyone LOVED the colors. i poked a grape, cherry tomato, half a fig, slice of cucumer, mint, and some other i can’t remember with a skewer…
  • =) bringing your own salad dressing seems to be a popular theme here. i like.
  • you’re right, it’s not about the food. i guess i’m just overly sentitive about other people’s feelings around food and sharing because i used to feel that way too. the “put some veggies aside for me” thing is a good idea.
  • rejuvelac is made from sprouted wheat berries… you can drink it or make nut cheese.
  • this is actually interesting because i was talking to someone who has done the “raw” diet a few days ago. for her, she ate EVERYTHING raw. raw dairy, raw meat, raw fish. she wasn’t happy with it at all in the end and gave up the whole thing. this wa…

  • actually, i was concerned about this too. i looked up the definition of complex carbs and found that vegetables (leafy greens and such) are actually considered complex carbs… fruits are simple carbs.

  • thanks for all the suggestions everyone (as usual… i love this website!). once i get a dehydrator i’ll use it to warm things… oh, i really like the idea ZOE that you become more tolerant to cold weather. that makes a lot of sense to me. aw, thanks w…
  • hey, you want to maintain weight but still keep cholestorol and all that in check, so i think VOLUME is the important thing. for the newcomer, it’s a little daunting how many lbs of fruit and veggies you can consume. when i sat down with my family y…
  • i read coconut water stimulates the thyroid, so maybe that’s why you get a boost of energy. yummy.
  • =) it looks like we all wrote that at the same time. we all know what sad is apparently!
  • =) S.A.D. = standard american diet, a sad diet i don’t have a dehydrator. it depends on your oven. my parents have a convection one that has a little star with means it’s on but not letting off much heat. i just use that and let it stay in about twi…
  • i don’t think we should think of these as “slip-ups” but rather permitted deviations. you know how great you feel when you eat raw, sometimes you forget and need to be reminded by eating something not raw. oh, and tessa… isn’t it weird that we are “…

  • hey, yeah, i do exactly what queera@ said, then sometimes i use a nut milk bag to strain out the pulp. it colors the bag, but if you have two, use one as a “juicer”

  • i too will be going soon and had some concerns. my best friend is from New Delhi, so here’s what i know so far, though i haven’t had the “raw food” talk with her yet. =) in general i think that fruits would be AMAZING, but you’ll have to pay a littl…
