  • In addition, these people were selected for being "typical" in a sense - not because they really, really wanted to change their lives. I think their learning curve was even larger. I'll underline the word "analytical" that squidgy used - there's not…
  • Ditto corn - very good raw. Better, I think. Asparagus I slice fairly thin and toss in salads, pastas, etc. I only go for the thin, tender ones as HolyGuac mentions. Brussel sprouts - we tend not to eat it, I don't know why. We love raw cauliflower …
  • I've heard from a few people in other parts of the country (like Seattle) that they are experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder to a greater degree this year. I have no idea why, but there ya go. No doubt the weather brings up all sorts of emotions…
  • (((Hugs))) I think you're on the right track intuitively - try to incorporate some healthy vegan cooked foods, see if you can get yourself through your exam, and pick up again when maybe you don't have that stress hanging over you. If you have the t…
  • Interesting info. Hope you're feeling better at least!
  • I did a recipe search and came up with several - see if this works: http://goneraw.com/search/node/kelp noodle type:recipe

  • When it comes to mad kitchen skillz, some people have them, some people don't. I think a lot of people who post recipes here have always been into food and cooking and eating...whether it's conventional, vegetarian, vegan or raw. So keep that in min…
  • This is not the first time I've heard of a baby being diagnosed as nutritionally deficient. My guess is that you've also been told that he's in a low "percentile" for weight, too? I think part of the problem here is that conventional medicine looks …
  • Try a health food/natural foods store. Perhaps a well-stocked Whole Foods. Nibs and powder are about $20 a pound.

  • I don't. I figure the saltiness is some sort of preservative.
  • My question is what do you eat when you aren't eating raw? Dr. Neal Barnard (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) says in one of his books that it takes about three weeks to change your taste buds so that ew flavors or textures become norm…
  • More for NappturallyMe than the original poster, but it's something I've seen over and over again: it's really, really hard for most people to go from SAD to Raw. Some people can, just like some people can quit smoking cold turkey and some people ca…

  • Yes, I recommend you do more research if you're worried about nutrients like protein and calcium, which are found abundantly in plant-based foods. But as for eating fish, raw or otherwise, that will certainly depend on why you've arrived at this poi…

  • Yep - nearly everyone sells out eventually.
  • Re: Search by thread/forum author This can't be combined with a keyword search, correct? One cannot search for a term within posts or recipes by a certain user? For example, there's no simple way to find a post by Carnap that mentions cashews.
  • One more thought - a blended nut paste might be an OK substitute for young coconut flesh. For example, pistachios would add an interesting flavor and sweetness that would be complementary in desserts, drinks, etc.
  • IMO young coconuts don't really taste like coconut as we typically think of it. For the pina colada they probably want regular coconut meat. I like the suggestion above - definitely worth trying.
  • I agree with Achin70 about Dr. Cousens' plan, and I just added some suggestions to AliBee's thread that you may want to check out as well.
  • Big mushroom fan here. Love em. Delicious. But you probably know by now, I don't eat anything if it isn't delicious.
  • Alibee, congrats. If you haven't seen the documentary (now called 'Simply Raw,' no longer 'Raw for 30 Days') then SEE it. If you can't get the DVD, they're doing screenings all over. Dr. Gabriel Cousens also has a book on his work with diabetic pati…
  • We get most of our veggies at the farmers' market, but when we go to a regular supermarket for something, sometimes we go up and down the aisles just for fun. Also, we're fascinated by what's in other people's carts. We always see overweight people …
  • There's two ways I usually deal with this question. (I've been answering the question "where do you get your protein?" for 15 years or so.) 1. I get protein from plant sources. Protein is only an issue when you get too much of it. Too much protein l…

  • Being raw in a non-raw family is good practice for being raw in a non-raw world. But I think young people who go raw (or even vegan/vegetarian) have to take so much more responsibility for feeding themselves by developing kitchen skills, doing their…

  • "Well, I guess I like animals more than you." But yeah, it's irritating to be around closed-minded people. Feel smugly superior for a minute, then move on.
  • I've never liked the dried flaky white coconut, nor coconut-flavored things, and I don't like it in raw recipes. But I have no similar issues with young Thai coconuts nor coconut oil (nor Coconut Bliss ice cream, which isn't raw but it's fabulous). …
  • Yes, I agree with the spirit of DinkoZlatina - I think of a "diet" as something people do temporarily to control their weight or something, and I don't consider eating raw to be a "diet" in that sense. This is also why I'm against counting calories …
  • Marta, there are some really supportive and understanding people here and some great advice already. I think Jessica has the right attitude (and J, I'm SO glad to hear things are going better for you). For me the issue of counting calories, points, …
  • As indulgences go, vegan pastry seems relatively harmless, but what are the effects of this indulgence? Like energy spikes and a hard crash, or weight gain, or...? Maybe there's a message or clue by looking at what's going on with your body after ea…

  • I find Superfood2's post to be very sensible. Recently I've been considering that there are many values or opinions we hold, like politics or religion, that might disconnect us from other people. I'm challenging myself to understand that those conne…
  • Juliano has a recipe for "caviar" using papaya seeds, but I can't recall it now. I know it's in his book.
