omshanti I’m glad that you popped up. I apologize for going off-topic, but I was very interested in what you started to talk about in the “Into to the Wild” forum
http://goneraw.com/forums/6/topics/7528
You mentioned a 100 items challenge?
If you have a second – can you just give some suggestions on how to do that? ie—I’d love a few starter ideas… like what have people you’ve known gotten rid of?
I’m not a ‘stuff’ person, but still have some clutter…
If you want to bring this particular inquiry back to that forum that would be cool too! Thanks!
I never said I hated the government, or felt superior to you. And, yes, this thread shouldn’t turn into a discussion about false-flag terrorism, so I agree that we should agree to disagree on this one, and leave it at that.
On an entirely different note, I was pro-abortion until I realized that it’s entirely unnecessary. I’m surprised to find so many pro-abortion people on a forum that supposedly values living things so highly.
Yes, that is entirely accurate. I am pro-abortion. I think all pregnancies should be terminated. It has nothing to do with believing in a woman’s right to make her own choices and decide what to do with her body. Rather, it is entirely about my hatred of babies. EAT THE YOUNG! Omshanti, pour me a glass of wine please. Stat.
Are you in favor of killing five-year-olds, or are you only in favor of killing 5-year-olds if it’s the mother’s choice to do it? After all, the mother has to feed the child. Shouldn’t she have some say in the matter?
You were a fetus once. Should you have been aborted?
Kevlar Being against fascist control does not mean that a person wants to have an abortion. I’m pro-choice because I don’t think anyone has the right to control what someone else goes through biologically.
But I do not think abortion should be used as birth control. It’s not something that anyone should be cavalier about.
Many people in this forum have already pointed out that as a society we need to work on the underlying causes before we can reasonably deal with abortion.
I’m tired right now so I’m sure that this is coming out all screwy, but I don’t think Anyone is really thrilled about abortion. Please read the article that I quoted on page one and linked here below… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bart-motes/sarah-...
PS: I also find it amazing that pro-life folks RARELY mention programs to help with the children that are born and are unwanted. That is the saddest situation of all. How many children die a year from child-abuse?
I know an NYU Psychology Professor who was asked to give a speech at a RTL rally. When he started to question motives and why programs for these children did not exist - they booted him off the stage!
I hate the thought of anyone being aborted. But I hate worse the thought of a woman being a slave to sexual reproduction. It’s not a simple subject. I think that it is completely immoral to use abortion as your birth control – to do it again and again. But I also don’t think it is the government’s place to force you to carry every pregnancy to term. If I had gotten pregnant at 16, I probably would have terminated – and carried guilt with me forever. If I unintentionally got pregnant now, I would keep it – I have a good job and could support a baby. If I were raped and got pregnant, I would probably not keep it. Those are my personal choices and the choices of every other woman in a country that is not controlled by religion. I will fight for women to be entitled to make those choices for themselves.
A woman does have a choice about what she goes through biologically. She has the choice to use a condom, or the choice to not have sex with her boyfriend if he refuses to wear one.
And we have the morning-after pill now, so there’s no excuse for a pregnancy as the result of a rape.
Abortion is a tool for the irresponsible, and it’s not justifiable.
And I’m an atheist (in case you think this is religiously motivated.)
I have been under the impression that a morning after pill works after conception – so it is still the termination of a pregnancy. if this is true, your argument is deeply flawed. if it is not true and the pill somehow works before conception (which I doubt) your argument is still flawed. not all rapes are reported – especially not immediately. incest – child abuse – generally not reported, especially not immediately. all kinds of situations lead to pregnancy, not just those included in your reductionist argument. And Kevlar? condoms break. birth control fails. humans make mistakes. your arguments are pretty close-minded, but i’m not going to dismiss you as a troll. however, i’m not going to continue a back and forth debate that doesn’t center on rational arguments.
Mistakes happen. If you have sex and the unthinkable happens, I guess that’s just part of being human (again, your responsibility). I don’t object to preventing a pregnancy with the morning after pill, but I do object to a doctor tearing a fetus apart with a metal tube and sucking it out of a woman’s uterus. That’s murder.
Research abortion. It isn’t pretty.
You know – when I started this forum it wasn’t the ‘abortion’ forum.
btw – rape isn’t pretty either.
I know how abortion works. In my ninth grade biology class, my teacher decided to explain abortion in very graphic terms – including stories of the fetus being ripped apart limb by limb. She was very careful to collect all of the hand-outs after class, but I and one other girl stuck ours in our backpacks. We went to the principal with them. One week later, Mrs. Romano was fired. Looking back, I am proud of my fourteen year old self for knowing when something was wrong – preaching against abortion in public school – and taking action against it. I resent that every time we disagree, you assume it is because I haven’t done my research. Again, we can each know plenty about a topic and disagree. I think you’re condescending in the extreme – but you probably think I am too. We’ll just have to add that to the list of our disagreements. I’m logging off and getting back to work while I still have a job.
Many apologies, Greenghost – you are correct and we have hijacked your thread. I promise to stop posting off-topic here.
A friend emailed this to me earlier today. Please feel free to copy and paste and email along….
Okay, I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight….. * If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re’exotic, different.’ quintessential American story.
OK, much clearer now.
I love it, Rawleen. Here is another good one: This is Your Nation on White Privilege
By Tim Wise 15/09/08 “ZSpace”—- For those who still can’t grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a “fuckin’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you’ll “kick their fuckin’ ass,” and talk about how you like to “shoot shit” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested. “
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance because “if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it’s good enough for me,” and not be immediately disqualified from holding office-since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the “under God” part wasn’t added until the 1950s-while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you’re black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful.
White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do-like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor-and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college—you’re somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look. “
White privilege is being able to fire people who didn’t support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a “trick question,” while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O’Reilly means you’re dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.
White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a “light” burden.
And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren’t sure about that whole “change” thing. Ya know, it’s just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.
White privilege is, in short, the problem.
That’s OK DagnyTaggart I didn’t mean that you hijacked the forum! It evolved that way! You made some really really good points.
In fact I started to hijack the forum with my “100 items” question to omshanti....
I didn’t word what I wrote above very well. I’m kind of tired.
There are just so many things that scare me about Palin that I can’t categorize them all anymore.
lol, you always resort to the rape excuse.
By the way, it doesn’t matter who wins this election. The Democrats and Republicans both work for the same corporate masters, and a vote for them will be a vote for just more of the same.
The game is rigged.
Check out:
Cynthia McKinney – Green Party
Bob Barr – Libertarian Party
Chuck Baldwin – Constitution Party
Ralph Nader – Independent
Those are the real candidates.
And isn’t it funny how anyone who speaks their mind on this forum is immediately suspected of being a troll?
Kevlar – I agree with you actually about the Dems and the Rep’s working for the same masters – the corporations with the MONEY. Greed runs this country, from the bottom up. I will not vote for either -
I’m going 3rd party – for sure.
She is – at best – a Stepford-candidate…
btw… rape is NEVER “LOL”
I wasn’t laughing at rape, I was laughing at you.
OK… so now we’re down to rudeness.
That is charming.
Honesty is rudeness now?
Well, I think it’s pretty rude to accuse me of laughing at rape, don’t you think?
rawleen and DagneyTaggart, I am so impressed! Hugs!
Greenghost – ignore him. There is no rational debate to be had here – just insults and a unhealthy belief that his opinion is the only correct opinion on every single issue.
it just seemed like you were. I apologize if I misunderstood your entry Kevlar. I am pretty tired right now.
I used to work in a women’s crisis center and I’ve seen some really wrecked lives there.. some involved past rapes. It was very disturbing.
jeeze DagnyTaggart – you type fast!
No problem, greenghost. I apologize too. ;)
Thanx
I think I need to get some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s now.. g’ni
hey green ghost, im pooped but tomarrow am will go back to into the wild thread and post some stuff on the 100 things list…(by the way i can always be found on the “mangers” thread)... i had to see this juicy politico thread for myself though…teehee… some good stuff here, some scarey stuff too but hey isnt that america?
Dagney i hope you are home sipping a fine shiraz or maybe a pinot like i did myself earlier….goodnight and sweet dreams to all.
Rawleen, I understand the point you were trying to make, but where it lost a bit of momentum was the fact that the comparisons were between the Presidental candidate of one party with the Vice Presidential candidate of the other. They will obviously have very different roles when one or the other assumes said roles.
I must admit it (along with Dagny’s) was a cleverly written little piece, but didn’t quite hit it with the fullness of point that it was intended. Of course, as has been stated in media, Palin IS one “heartbeat” away from being President should McCain be elected. ; )
Questions for everyone:
1. What do you think are the MOST IMPORTANT issues of our time in this country?
2. What are the things that you think will “make or break” us as a nation?
3. What do you think are the most important qualities in a LEADER (more specifically, leader of this country)?
