Juicing Relief

I started a juice fast on Friday and have emptied my bowels a few times, but can still feel that there is a considerable amount of waste inside. How long does it take to be completely empty of stool??

I'm on my third day right now and I'm juicing until this Friday. Do you think 7 days is long enough or should I go for more time.

This is my first juice fast, so I just want to do it right and safe.

Also, any tips of juices that really clean out your system would be appreciated!!

I've been juicing lots of celery, carrots, apples, kiwis, melons, and oranges.

  • How much juice are you consuming per day? I just finished my first three day juice fast. I did not feel like I detoxed except maybe on the first day.

I don't think I would worry too much about an empty bowel......Gosh we need to fart!

    Sorry in a silly mood.

I would use some smooth move tea at night.. 7 days should be a great cleanse!

i've been drinking the chocolate smooth move for a while now. i love the taste of it and it usually helps with my constipation.

last night, i finally went A LOT and this morning I did, too.

i'm drinking about 2 mugs at breakfast, 2 mugs for lunch, 2 mugs at dinner, and 2 later in the evening. i take coconut water and lemon water with me when i go out.

i'm still very hungry, so i'll probably start taking the master cleanse drink with me while i'm at work or out of the house.

  • I'd add in a lot more greens if I were you. It is the greens that really clean you out and escort toxins out of your system. If you just add enough fruit to make the greens taste ok, that is plenty.

  • I just started a juice fast today and was wondering are there any side effects that I should know about or not be alarmed if they happen?

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

hi rawgirl, i've had rashes like crazy and lots of breaking out on my arms and back. i also decided to stop taking all of my medications for good, so that might contribute to why i have these side effects.

other than that, i have hunger pains but i figure it's normal. i think the 2nd day was the hardest day for me. i was hungry from the first day so making myself drink juice was tough.

i'm on my 5th day right now and i'm breaking my juice fast on friday.

how long is your juice fast??

  • i agree that you need to add greens into your fast. Some (good and easily available) choices are kale, parsley, chard, beet greens, turnip greens, cilantro and dandelion. Also, yay for paying attention to emptying your bowels---that's absolutely critical to a successful juice fast! If you have one, I'd recommend using an enema kit; otherwise, would you be able to get a colonic?

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

hi autumnides!! i put kale in my juice yesterday and i love it!! it's so delicious. my grocery store has a VERY small organic produce section so kale and spinach were among the only ones i saw. my juicer doesn't juice greens very well so a pretty tiny amount of juice comes out. nonetheless, i am just really surprised at how much waste has been inside me. i feel like i lost 10 lbs in such a short amount of time.

i've heard mixed reviews about enemas and colonics. i've wanted to buy an enema kit, but then i'll read/hear somewhere that you should only naturally empty your bowels.

is there a specific brand of enema kit you use?? i feel like using it once a month wouldn't hurt.

  • i love kale in my juice too! partly, i have to admit, because they're easy to juice. my juicer has a really small mouth, so i like that with dinosaur kale there's not much squishing to do, or rolling up the leaves, or making a general mess like with some other greens and vegetables.

i use the Cara enema kit, which I'd been searching for FOREVER; i finally found it not at a big drugstore like Walgreens or at a raw-foods store like Karyn's but at a teeny little family-owned and operated pharmacy in Chicago. i don't know if i'm 100% sold on enemas and colonics either. BUT last spring I decided to commit myself to following Natalia Rose's suggestions for the next good while, and now I try to get a colonic or do an enema at least once every two weeks. And indeed I've lost weight, basically eliminated my constipation (i used to poo every 3-4 days, but now i usually go daily, sometimes twice/day) and have a much healthier and more intelligent relationship with food. (I have a history of overeating; apparently my throat chakra is wonky. okay.)

Anyway, she believes that the only way to deeply cleanse your body at a cellular level is to get rid of all garbage and waste matter in the body. She likens the body to a house and writes that you can't consider your house truly clean unless all the pounds of putrefied, moldy garbage that have accumulated over the decades are taken out of the house and thrown away. If your body doesn't eliminate, eliminate, eliminate, autointoxification will result.

Honestly, there was a period for a few weeks when I got so scared that I did an enema everyday---and my skin never looked more radiant. But I found it so time-consuming that I got pooped-out and stopped. (couldn't resist)

Yes I have done home enemas and colonics too. I did a number of cleanses over the past 2 years and home enemas work wonders if you get in a tight detox spot. I have tried that smooth move tea too but I think that enemas are actually better for you. Also I have to agree with autumnides that when I was doing enemas regularly my skin looked so glowing and beautiful. Maybe part of my success with totally changing my lifestyle and eating habits 2.5 years ago is that I have done the enemas and colonics. I read Natalia Rose's books too and her along with many other prominent raw food nutritionists recommend colon cleansing.

I recently have tried doing salt flushes at home in the mornings as an alternative to enemas and colonics. Has anyone else done these and what do you think?

One thing joannabanana make sure to keep drinking juice after you finish your fast. I would recommend 2 16oz glasses a day on an empty stomach before eating a meal. Coming off a fast is very confusing for your body and the first time I did it I felt so hungry after a couple days of being off it that I would overeat nuts. That was in my early stages of being on a raw diet though and I didn't really know all my options. Drinking juice daily is like taking a vitamin and it will keep you full of good nutrition. Also try making lots of green smoothies and blended soups as you come off your fast. Try to eat as much of these as you can since they are easy to digest and will help you as you go back to solid food. Some people say that your metabolism slows down during a fast and so its really important to do some healthy exercise after the fast to kick start the metabolism. The last think that you want to happen is to stop having good bowel movements as you go back to food.

Cleansing is always sooooo great, Hope you are enjoying yourself!

leahceleste!! thanks for all those tips. i came off the juice fast yesterday and it was crazy. i had soaked prunes in the morning and couldn't stop going to the bathroom all day. i drank a lot of juice yesterday and then had a salad for lunch and dinner.

today, i had too many solid fruits and veggies so now i am backed up again!! i didn't know breaking the fast would be so difficult. tomorrow, i'm just going to do juices again and probably smoothies, too.

i still feel much better though and my skin is glowing. i haven't had to use my face wash during the fast. i also lost 4 lbs in 6 days!! i could not believe how much waste i had inside me.

i'm so glad you and autumnides have experience with enemas. i will definitely be getting one!

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

also, does anyone know about fats that are okay to eat off of a fast???

i forgot to mention that i had almond butter today and my stomach was just all upset. i don't want to stay off fats too much just because the body obviously needs them.

and i'm not a fan of avocados so i don't know other fats!!

Joannabanana, Stanley Burrough's makes specific recommendations for breaking a Cleanse. I have no problems coming off a Master Cleanse following his guidelines. From page 25 of his book (paperback edition 1976):

First and Second Day . . . "Several 8 oz. glasses of fresh orange juice as desired during the day . . . prepares the digestive system to properly digest and assimilate regular food . . . " He recommends drinking the OJ slowly, and extra water as needed.

Third Day . . . "Orange juice in the morning. Raw fruit for lunch. Fruit or raw vegetable salad at night. You are now ready to eat normally."

Two teaspoons of epsom salts will give you diahrea, and will clean you out, but you will need to replenish your electrolytes after...

and since you are on liquid i would start with one teaspoon...

Joanna- if you read that book I sent you you wouldn't get backed up anymore!

Acidic fruits and veggies will do that for people with IBS. Let yourself heal... read the book!

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

zinfandel!!! i was reading it but then my mom closed the window, so i couldn't look at it anymore!!! my computer is whacky (it doesn't save old mail, it just deletes it) so i don't have it. would you send me it again?? i think i'm just gonna save it on my computer. i should've done that to begin with.

how's your ibs going now??? is the book helping?

Angela Stokes wrote a juice feasting book and in it she started on day 80 of her juice feast she was still having solid bowls

  • zinfandelzinfandel Raw Newbie

I just sent you the ebook again.

It's going really great for me. If I follow the rules of the book I am almost 100% normal. I have seen small baby step improvements int he last couple of weeks.

The times I have cheated things have gotten painful again for a day. Which is a bummer...but I guess I'm not healed yet. If I eat acidic food things get out of whack for 24 hours. Same for if I eat too many veggies. Veggies are too much bulk without enough calories for the healing phase.

Adding a nice enteric coated probiotic has also been very helpful! I think within 3 days I felt like it made a significant difference. Make sure to get one thats enteric coated or it won't make it all the way down in your system and it'll get destroyed by your digestive juices and stuff.

Good luck! The diet is strict but it really helps.... Also, getting lots of sleep is important.

  • Zinfandel, would you mind sharing that e-book? I am interested because my sister has IBS. Thank you!

hey guys. i just ordered the enema kit that autumnides recommended and i can't wait to get it. it's the fountain syringe 2 qt.

since it'll be my first time using it, do you know if i should do the whole 2 qt or should i progress into that. maybe start with 2 cups and then work my way up to 8? it just seems like A LOT of water and i'm terrified!!

It's called Self Healing Colitis and Crohn's by David Klein. You can get the ebook. If one follows his instructions it works.

  • Thank you Zinfandel, I appreciate the information :) I ordered the e-book this morning.

When I started doing enemas I read alot about how to do them first. Cleanse and Purify Thyself by Richard Anderson has good information on this and if you look up his website I think he posts home enema procedure on there too. I went ahead and started by doing at least three bags of water in one session. Meaning that you do one bag of water then go to the bathroom, then do another bag of water, then go to the bathroom, then do another bag of water, then go to the bathroom. You may not be able to hold a whole bag of water on your first go, but just do as much as you can then go to the bathroom, then do it again, and keep at this till you go through 3 bags of water. If you don't do enough bags of water then you are basically just stirring the waste up but not releasing it and that is no good. I also took the time to sterilize all the pots and containers that I put the water in. I used purified water that I warmed up on the stove until it was just at body temperature. The temperature of the water is important and if you have ever had a colonic then you have seen that they monitor it closely. It is best to start with warm body temp water and the last bag of water that you use do cooler water.

Also the position that you assume when filling up with water made a big difference for me. I had no success with lying on my side.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

The water goes into the colon easier if you are on your LEFT side, take slow deep breaths and stop the flow if it becomes over whelming... It is better to hold the first feeling, "of the need to empty" as long as possible... Also if you add a half to one teaspoon of salt to the bag of warm water, you wont have cramping...

question,my mom told me is not good to do this kind of colon cleanse because the flora of your intestine will get dry or something like that,is it true?I'm so new at this and i'm looking to clean my colon starting tomorrow or thursday.

Over doing a good thing is always bad... I don't believe an enema once or twice a month will hurt a child and I don't believe an enema once a week or two will hurt an adult... But you must need one to take one.. Doing an enema just as a regular method of cleaning out is dangerous as your colon will stop acting on its own... A paralytic colon is NO fun and can lead to potential death...

I am using a product called, Super Colon Cleanse... I bought it at the Whole Foods Store and it is working nicely... You take one 30 minutes before breakfast and one 30 minutes after dinner or at bedtime...

any advice on cleansing the colon WITHOUT enemas or colonics? the reason I ask is that I'm only 13. I'm looking to buy a juicer with my allowance.

  • carrie6292carrie6292 Raw Newbie

Beets are excellent at cleaning you out - and are fabulous for your liver.... i'm assuming they'd be wonderful for your colon as well :)

  • zinfandelzinfandel Raw Newbie

RawKidChef- Are you eating enough? You need to eat enough to push everything through. Are you eating enough soluble fiber like bananas and mangos? The soluble fiber provides bulk. Once I started adding some blended bananas to my diet with celery in it I felt much better.
