  • Hey everyone! So I just started 811 about a month ago, and feel dramatically more energetic from cutting out the fat. My only setback right now is salt (in the form of umeboshi paste and seaweeds), trying to cut that out as of this week. The book sh…

  • For those who have read the I-Ching: What copy would you recommend? Each version seems to have very different perspectives on/uses for the book.
  • I’ve had (best) coconuts with purple water before, there was less meat in them, and it was more like jelly. I think they might just have been very underripe.

  • It depends largely on what you eat. I tend to go by the standard of balancing leafy greens, sweet fruits, and fats 1/3 each by dry weight. Also, the more (and darker) leafy greens you eat, the less likely you will be to crave high-fat or high-starch…
  • I just got my Nesco in the mail yesterday! I just made kale crackers, papaya cubes, zucchini chips, and raisins, and it all turned out really well. I’m trying mushrooms later tonight, hopefully there’s enough room for them..

  • I made a curry last night with some acorn squash. I think the salt/oil marination really helps with the starchiness, and the spices I used covered up any remaining weird texture. Spaghetti squash is much easier to use if it’s very ripe (you can spee…

  • Navitas brand is the cheapest I’ve seen, all the other brands I’ve seen around my area have been almost twice as much. I like to spread a thin layer of honey on a big spoon, and coat it with cacao nibs, it’s soo good for a chocolate fix!
  • Sacramento, California.
  • I LOVE raw artichokes, and am so glad they’re in season right now! The outer leaves are a bit tough, but after peeling about two layers, the white part on the bottom of the leaves is soft and completely edible. The choke still needs to be sliced off…

  • I just downloaded a copy of Get Fresh, lots of great information, thanks for posting the link!
  • Growing your own herbs is so much cheaper! I like mint best because it only needs watering and spreads like groundcover within a few months, rosemary is also very low-maintenance and requires very little water. I just saw this website today called h…

  • I’m 19, and live in Sacramento. I’m in a vegan household, so my roommates are very understanding of my food choices. My family just thinks I’m nuts, haha. Nagev: I don’t really party anymore, but when I do have the occasional glass or two of wine, I…

  • I like grapeseed oil as a moisturizer, but will sometimes use coconut oil for really dry skin. As far as eating coconut oil goes, its also been strongly argued that heating it over a certain temperature denatures its structure and turns it into a su…
  • Usually I get a big side of lemon slices for a “dressing”, and avocado and tomato on top. It’s a great way to turn people on to simpler raw food too, when I’m with a large group or with family, people always end up taking stabs at my salad.

  • One of the most helpful things I used to get me started with raw food was YouTube. Just search “raw foods” or “raw foodism”, and there are hundreds of videos about raw foods, raw living, superfoods, detox, plus some inspirational video blogs. As far…

  • Sun Maid uses genetically-modified grapes and pesticides.I would assume that they also use high drying temperatures in order to cut costs and time.

  • Another way of getting superfood nutrition is to eat wild foods and local edible weeds. Right now we have dandelion, garlic shoots, plantain, mint and soursob growing in our backyard. For some reason, eating wild, super-mineralized wild food gives m…
  • I get my maca, matcha, hempseed, local bee pollen and spirulina in bulk from one of the local health food stores. I’ve found goji berries at an Asian market for $6/lb (they’re also called lycium, wolfberries, and medlar berries-but it’s all the same…
  • Sure, you can survive without them, but is just surviving enough? When I eat lots of raw cacao, maca, wild greens, garlic, hempseed, matcha, spirulina, etc., my body feels incredible, and way above “healthy” or “normal”. I also feel that eating supe…
  • Sac has lots of stores that carry raw organic food: Whole Foods, the Natural Foods Co-Op (or for a 15 minute drive the Davis Co-Op), Elliots Natural Foods (3 locations), Sunrise Natural Foods, and more Asian markets than I can count. Whole Foods and…
  • Morning_theft, I’ve never heard that before about spirulina and b12, thanks for posting that. Are there any better food sources of b12?
  • As an alternative to synthetic B12, you could use spirulina, which comes in either powder or pill form. It actually has a pleasing taste (like concentrated green vegetables) and goes well in soups and green smoothies.
