Suggestions please?

Hi everyone, I need some suggestions for lunches. This weekend I am involved in a bike ride event for cancer. It is a 200+km bike ride over 2 days. The event is providing us with lunch and the only thing they are providing is sandwiches. I can't eat gluten or yeast and wouldn't even think of eating a sandwich but what can I have? I am told I can bring my own lunch and it will be held for me at the lunch stop but it can't be perishable so I am stuck as to what to bring that will provide me with the energy I will need to finish the ride for each day?

Thanks for your help.

  • When I ride I carry either a banana, dried apricots, or if its a really long ride I buy raw bars (nothing with chocolate for obvious heat reasons) from Whole foods. I feel your pain as it was a struggle for me to adjust. Also an idea and something I used to bring which rocks, do not know how die hard you are, but if you buy those ezekiel sprouted wraps and put a banana, honey, and almond butter in there to make a burrito, it really hits the spot. It can be messy to eat while your riding, but it fits in your jersey, easy to eat, and has tons of what you need when riding. Who cares if you get a little messy, your riding a bike.

Lastly, something I do also for long rides; chia, coconut water, maca powder and honey. Then you can drink some of your calories too.

    Where's the ride?

  • Thanks for the suggestions Samuelj, I think I will make the burrito for my lunches. The ride is in Toronto Ontario Canada, we are riding from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Great point pixx on dehydrated foods, I may stay away from those since it is supposed to be a warm weekend.

Suasoria, great idea on Vega, I have never tried it but have always wanted to, maybe I'll test it out on this ride.

This ride is only a ride not a race. I am using this ride as training for my first half ironman in July. Figuring out the eating part is crucial so I will take all of your tips into consideration.

    Thanks so much.

  • Thanks! I don't have a dehydrator yet as I am still new to all of this and am slowly transitioning over to raw, I do hope to get one shortly though. I won't have a backpack with me but I can fit some fruit in the pockets of my riding shirt but the weather is supposed to be quite warm so something like banana's might get soft and mushy fast. We won't be able to stop and buy fruit along the way as the majority of the riding will be in country roads and tehre will be too many spectators etc. :(

We have a lunch stop where we get the sandwiches and sit down and eat and stretch. I could have something prepared at this stop for my arrival, I just don't know what to prepare as I want it to supply me with enough energy but at the same time I don't want to be spending alot of time in the bathroom if I eat too much fiber. I was thinking of making a huge fruit salad but not sure if it will keep all those hours while it waits for me to arrive to the lunch stop.
