Aging and Face Routine Help!

Well, I'm starting to get Old! And I need to redo my horrible skin routine.

My skin feels dry, pores feel large and irritated (especially around the cheeks) but I'm still not 100% raw. I've heard that you shouldn't wash your face too many times because you can easily damage the skin, fat and oil glands especially on your cheeks. Anyways I've been through Jojoba Oil (too heavy), Emu Oil, Olive Oil and a few others and they only one that's close to okay is Coconut Oil. The only problem is the climate I live in can be very harsh during the seasons and Coconut Oil works best in a humid climate. Is there any Oils or fruit/veg (that's not a pain) to apply that's just as light but a little more moisturizing? What about using something to spray on and seal the oil?? I currently use liquid witch hazel right before the moisturizer.

I'm also concerned about over moisturizing my eyes because the skin is different underneath them. Does anyone use something different for the eye area?

  • i use coconut oil for around my eyes too. it also helps to remove makeup.

  • valeria, after i wash my face at night, i blot tea tree oil on my face with a cotton ball, and then put a coin-sized amount of jojoba oil on my hand and rub that into my face. the combination works really well and i rarely get dry skin.

  • Try blending coconut oil with aloe vera gel. I've been using that for a while and it really moisturizes without getting to heavy. On occasion I add a bit of baking soda for a scrub. That helps rejuvenate my skin. I just ran out of my mixture yesterday and am trying out olive oil. It's alright but doesn't smell nearly as good!

  • Great suggestions! I'll have to try tea tree oil, keep using coconut oil for my eye area and I LOVE the idea of coconut oil blended with Aloe, I've had great results with aloe on my skin. Thanks so much!

  • The witch hazel that you are putting on your skin before your moisturizer is probably what is causing the dryness. Witch hazel is amazing, but should only be used a couple times a week due to the alcohol content.

    All I do is skin brush before I get into the shower and then use coconut oil for a moisturizer. That's it. :)

  • Spritz water with rosewater on your face first to give it the hydration it needs. Then the oil or moisturizer will seal the water in.

    I use witch hazel as a gentle toner/cleanser now and then. I don't find it hydrating.

  • ameliawilder18 - Wow I didn't even think about how witch hazel can be so drying. It's expensive and I go through lots of it so cutting down will definetly help out our budget!

    swayze - I used to do the same thing but felt that the dry brush was almost scratching my face... do you know anything about this? I'm pretty sure the brush I was using was synthetic - bought from the health food store.

    Pirawna - Where do you get rosewater? I've heard there's different grades too. What do you suggest? In the past I've looked into it but had little success with information. I'd love to use something like that.

    Arrrrggg...how annoying!

    Valeria, you definitely don't want to use a synthetic brush for skin brushing. You want a natural bristle brush. I use two separate brushes, one for my face and one for the rest of my body. A quick amazon search should help you out.

  • I use avocado oil as a moisturizer as well as making sure I drink enough water and also take Calc. Flour. tissue salts (for elasticity)

  • Interesting, I've never heard of tissue salts! I'll have to read more on them...

    The only avocado oil that's available around here is cooked and very processed. I'll look into buying some online once my coconut oil runs out.

  • I tried tried several oils for my face. Coconut oil was a bit too heavy, and when I put it around my eyes I must have used too much because the oil got in my eyes and blurred my vision for awhile.

    Emu oil was wonderful when I got a really bad skin flare from a ghastly product that an aesthetician used on my face. It helped my skin heal, but I felt really bad using it (animal product).

    I've been using argan oil on my face and neck for several months. I like it a whole lot. I'd say it's a 'dry' oil as opposed to olive oil, coconut oil, etc. which go on more 'wet'. After the coconut oil incident, I am careful not to put the argan oil too close to my eyes, and I just use a teeny teeny amount around my eyes. It only take two or three drops to hydrate my face and neck.

    I use coconut oil on the rest of my body and it works fine.

    I'm 53 and my skin looks great. I credit my skin care regiment and my diet for that.

  • You can exfoliate every so often with sea salt which gives your skin an incredible glow. Do this only twice a month or so, though. Too much can irritate and cause your skin to dry up.

  • my mother is also getting up there in age and eating plenty of healthy fats seemed to help her. i just wanted to add in that you should also be EATING fresh aloe if possible :) gabriel cousens makes lots of smoothies with them, they're hydrating and detoxing. msm powder is supposed to firm you up/get rid of wrinkles/etc. have juice every day, that helped me get that "glow". cucumbers in particular are great whole and juiced for skin.

  • Eating aloe seems like a good idea. I have two large plants in my home right now. How much would you suggest adding?

  • i'd say to use the gel of a leaf or two. that's what gabriel does so i would just follow his lead.

    mcnoogie, i've heard that oily skin can be helped out by eating a lot of b vitamins. i have no idea why, but it might be worth looking into. also mychelle skin products are awesome, they really helped my skin a lot.

    Let me also mention that thru my mid 20's I had very dry skin until I used a prescription product called the Obaji skin care system. It's a super stron retin-a based system that over several months peels your face (sounds horrible, doesn't it?!?!) and results in wrinkle free, evenly toned skin. Ever since, I have super-fast oil producing skin that constantly needs to be blotted/maintained. Even worse, my skin still feels soooo dry after I wash it. It's almost like my skin is so dry it produces too much oil to compensate, but then the oil production won't stop. I believe the product has perminately damaged my skin as I've been off it for more than 5 years. Plus, the worst part is that I didn't really need such a strong product; I was influenced by others so I tried it. I've gone through loads of different face soap & lotion brands and combinations of such but none stop the oil.

    I should also mention that I ususally only wash my face in the mornings as the less I wash it the less oily it seems to be; as if the washing brings the oil out again. I hope someone out there can relate!!!

    Also, other than needing "tried & true" advice help to stop the oil production, do any of you know about ill effects associated specifically with strong retin-a products?
