coffee in the mornings?

Okay, so I have completely stopped eating any meat, drinking cows milk and any processed stuff. I am doing fruit and veggies all the time. When I started this about a month ago I wieghed 150, I just wieghed this morning and am down to 144. So not too bad. I was wondering though, should I stop drinking my coffee in the morning? I DO love 2 cups of coffee in the morning. I put two teaspoons of sugar and two teaspoons of creamer in it. Do you recommend I stop doing the coffee? Also, is having an avacodo and almond milk smoothie for breakfast a bad idea? I have read conflicting info about avacodo being a good fat to have instead of a fat.

  • YES, stop!! Caffeine is a stimulant, its addictive, and its no good for our body. You will definitely feel much better if you do not drink coffee. There are many studies showing the downside to coffee, here is one: The Toxic Effects of Coffee

  • I think it is a personal choice with coffee. Being as close to 100% is ideal but I know a lot of people include caffeine in their diets and still lose weight and have glowing health.

    Avocados are also goo hearth healthy fats, but all things in moderation. Ill usually eat 1/2 an avocado at a time, but thats just me

  • Should you stop drinking coffee- depends who you ask:-) Seriously. I see stuff on the news about how bad it is, and then see studies how it may keep away alztimers? It gets confusing! Sounds to me like you have made a lot of changes in a short period of time. Don't make yourself miserable over it. If you really want that cup in the am, have it for now. Trying to change too many things at once can be overwhelming to some people.

    The wholistic practicioner I'm going to for knee pains hates the idea of coffee. But, it's not the caffeine. He told me to drink tea with caffeine when I switched off of coffee if I feared caffeine withdrawl problems.

    Go figure.

    Anyways, he insists there is a link to it and bladder cancer? Since bladder cancer seems to pop up quite a bit where I work, I decided to hang up the coffee cup for a while and see how I felt.

    We tend to drink a LOT of coffee where I work, so it did make me wonder? But, I also wonder if it might have more to do with excessive coffee drinking. (not just one or two cups a day)

  • Yes, everything is a personal choice. Can someone be healthy and drink coffee? Sure. However, if you take an extremely healthy person and add coffee to their diet, will they become more healthy? Probably not. Actually it will probably take away from their health. I used to consume a lot of coffee, about a pot per day. Then I stopped drinking it one day. Then I became raw, and a while after being raw I drank a cup of coffee and became very sick.

    I would say, give it up for a while. Maybe one or two months. Then, try it out again. If you don't feel that it takes away from how good you feel, then I suppose there's no reason to stop. But I think there is enough evidence out there to want to be sure.

  • Over the last couple years it's been a roller coaster for me and coffee. I LOVE coffee, but it doesn't love me. It makes me spacy and shaky and super lightheaded. It hasn't always done that, but as I've become more aware of my body, I've become more sensitive as well. I wouldn't punish yourself if you want the coffee. Let your body tell you what you want. I drink black chai tea now with some almond milk and agave and that wakes me up, but doesn't give me the negative affects that coffee does. =)

  • hey i drink coffee still, but i would suggest switching to organic coffee with agave nectar and hazelnut milk (for creamer) you will notice a difference switching from sugar. and the creamer you use. Look at the ingredients. do you know what all those things are in it? Someday i might give up coffee, but for now, these substitutions at least get me a little closer to raw with my coffee.   • I used to drink unbelievable amounts of caffeine! Think 2 energy drinks in the morning (not Red Bull, I'm talking about those 16 oz cans of Monster) and then I would go to Starbucks and have a drink with 3 shots of espresso (sometimes 6, or 9, or 12 in one day!) I'm surprised I seem to have recovered pretty well, but the weeks after I stopped cold turkey were very tough. Unparalleled headaches, mood swings, all that. It was difficult to judge how it was affecting my perception at that point since I was on it constantly and experienced withdrawal afterwards.

    Yesterday (9 months later) I drank a small amount of yerba mate tea as a treat since I thought I could handle a bit of caffeine again. It was not the treat I had hoped for. I noticed all of these weird quirks: repetitive thought loops, irritability, tension. I really prefer my baseline state of mind and body to the caffeine high I used to love so much after all this time. I say see how you do without it and revisit it in a couple/few weeks, and make your decision as to whether or not it's worth it- whenever you're ready of course : ) You're doing great things for your health. Take it as slowly as you need to.

    Sounds like a tasty smoothie! I wouldn't recommend having it in the morning specifically- much better to eat a generous amount of fruit for breakfast. It digests much more easily and will provide you with lots of energy throughout the day. You will probably even wind up craving less food.

  • Kombucha gives you lots of energy without the caffeine and it has lots of health benefits to it like Probiotics and other good Digestive Enzymes - at the very least try switching to green tea

  • Yes, I believe that Kombucha isn't as bad as coffee, but it is not an ideal drink, especially as something to consume on a regular basis. See this thread. Its important to note that all of that "energy" you feel is probably the un-eaten processed sugar in the commercial Kombucha.

  • My technique in getting off coffee is to just have one cup per day for a week or so (if you're having more than that) then switch to black tea for about a week, then green tea, then herbal tea. This way, you are easing your body off the caffeine. For me, the coffee isn't necessarily the addiction, its that I like to have something warm and tasty in the morning. So, the teas work well for me. When you are down to herbal tea, maybe you'll want to make the switch to warm water with lemon and/or ginger or something else that is tasty and considered raw.

    And, I agree with others that making too many changes at once can shock the system and make you swing back into bad SAD eating. Good luck!
