worried about fat content

i am very new to raw, but have always been conscious of my fat intake. Now that I am raw, I am eating nuts (about 1/2 cup a day) and avocados (1 a day max) and finding myself thinking about the fat content. In a former life, I NEVER would have eaten that much fat in a day and while I am trying to breathe and relax, I am still thinking about it.

For dinner tonight, I am eating the broccolli slaw with cashew mayo and keep finding myself thinking “man, that’s a lot of fat in there…” I know I have to retrain my mind to think of these foods as pure and that they pass through my system, and in truth, I don’t think I am overdoing it.

Any advice to get over this mild obsession?


  • it’s a very different type of fat and your body processes it differently than fats from animal products. what diet were you on before?

    there are these diet trends that go through american culture that say “fat is bad” one day and then “carbs are bad”. the raw way of eating is different than that approach. it looks at what you SHOULD have more than you shouldn’t.

    I would love to hear what others have to say…

  • its the good fat that cleans up the bad, as well as keep you thin. as long as they are raw without a doubt. Make sure you eat more fruits and veggies than you do nuts and seeds. If you experience a belly ache. then you had too much.

    Also tips about oils. They must be in an amber glass jar. this will keep it from going rancid. As vegetable oils are very vulnerable to light and oxygen. cold pressed too!

    I eat tons of food from training hard. I eat an avocado almost everyday, with some tahini, and lots of nuts and seeds and cacao. But i also eat tons of veggies (ex. 1/2-1 lb of spinach a day), and fruit. You have to keep it balanced at all levels.

  • raw fats are healthy fats but I would not over consume them. To much fat even plant fat can make you energy levels drop and leave you feeling very sluggish. 1/2 cup a nuts a day is alright, but if you are going to eat that quantity of nuts dont eat avos on top of that. Stick to fresh fruits for energy and green leafy vegetables for calcium and other needed vitamins and minerals. Just remember that no body is created eaqual and some people need more fat than others. People that are underweight should eat more fats and greens, while other which are trying to lose weight should make fruits their staple. Do not restrict your self! Worst possible thing to do. Listen to that body of yours. Tune into it to see what it really needs. Don’t give into emotions and you are golden! Hope this helps.

    I’m glad you are trying to get over your fat phobia! Its not all bad. Try alternating different fats daily so you do not consume too much in general. ie; nuts/seeds one day avocado another. Disregard said advice if you are already doing this! ;0)

  • thanks everyone. I am pretty active, and am at my (for me) perceived correct body weight and body fat, give or take. I will be careful on the nuts, and will definitely switch up the kind of fats. I think having “watched” my fats for so long, and now being on a food plan where “fats” are “good”, I think I am just a bit too psyched about it :)

  • I’ve read that you try not to go over about 5 oz (about 1 1/4 cup) of nuts and seeds per day. Try to emphasize seeds if you can, since it’s a lighter food, has more fiber in general, has more of the omega 3’s and 6’s, and is slightly less acidic. Keep in mind cacao nibs and beans should probably count as a nut. And I’ve been counting Artisana Coconut Butter as a seed as well, since it’s ground whole coconut, and not pressed into an oil like regular coconut oil.

    Raw plant fats can help you to lose weight, since they have lipase, the fat-splitting enzyme. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe lipase is heat-sensitive, and it probably gets destroyed when the food is cooked. LOL. :)
