Hi. I was just wondering if there are any greens that are better than others – in terms of minerals, vitamins and lower in calories. I’ve been juicing mostly Kale and I love it. I was just juicing romaine and i don’t feel like i’m getting much in terms of nutrients – feels like mostly water. If anyone knows of any great greens that are low in calories and high in nutrients, i’d appreciate knowing :) Also, i’ve seen dandelion greens and broccoli rabe in the store – can i juice these? Thanks!

  • I use some parsley, ~2.5-3 oz per 2 qts juice. I use spinach, kale, escarole (or endive or dandelion ) romaine and celery. Romaine is actually one of the best lettuces to juice according to Norman Walker. I use 12 oz. per 2 qt of that. I used to eat broccoli raab cooked and it is definitely a bitter green, more so than kale, I think. I also throw 2 cucumbers in, too. I’m anal so I weigh all the produce out and have it ready to go for the morning and then I know I should have almost exactly 2 qts. I have to get up at 4 when I juice so I’m sort of on auto pilot when it’s that early!

Thanks Deborahann! I really appreciate it. I did juice some parsley too. I’m glad to know that the Romaine is actually giving me something! I think i’ll stear clear of the broccoli rabe since it is pretty bitter already (even with boiling it with water and garlic and salt and capers!). I actually changed my juicing schedule and i’m eating a fruit breakfast and then i juice for lunch and dinner. I have a 3 year old and i found it very difficult to juice and get him going for school in the morning (just 2 mornings a week, but it’s still chaotic on his off mornings!). Plus, i think i was snacking way too much at night. So, it just made sense for me to change around my juicing schedule. I feel better this way anyway. I don’t measure out things – i just kinda throw it all together :) Thanks for letting me know what you juice!

  • I just blended broccoli rabe with pineapple and ginger and water for a green drink experimentation. It wasn't my favorite, but doable.
