I'm new! (Gas and stomach size)

I was inspired to try raw by my raw enthusiast boyfriend, who follows 811. I eat raw most of the time when I’m with him and most of the time when I’m not, but sometimes I’ll have something like a serving of rice or hummus or oatmeal. Nowadays cooked food rarely appetizes me. I am drawn to raw foods and I feel better when I eat them. However, I can’t seem to eat enough. My stomach is too small to fit all the food I need. I like monomeals of bananas, but I just can’t eat enough of them in one sitting. I should be eating probably 5 at a time but I can only fit 3 at the absolute MAX.

My question is: how long does it take for your stomach to adapt to this diet? I can’t afford to lose any weight at all.

My other question is about gas! Whenever I have a high raw day (which has been common lately), I get really bad gas. Is this a form of detox or does it have to do with raw foods?

Thanks raw friends!

I know someone who had similar problems and she sent me this link from Matt Amsden. The Science Behind it All: The Blood Gas Theory ...scroll down about 1/4th of the way down.

She did a mini-cleanse which helped her… after I recommended a salt water flush. I don’t know if that is what people typically do… but that helps me.

Hey – I remember I used to feel full after 2 bananas, when I first went raw.

Now (because I am also following 811) almost six months later, I can get 7 in there, pretty comfortably!

My stomach is slowly regaining its natural elasticity, which makes me really happy, because I can eat a lot of the foods that I love, and get my needed calories without dense fats and worry.

When I first went raw, I didn’t eat hardly enough calories for my active lifestyle, and my body reacted by shutting into sleep-mode all the time. Eventually, my body wouldn’t have my small meals anymore, and I got a ravenous appetite which FORCED me into eating a TON of raw food! It wasn’t uncommon for me to down three heads of broccoli during this phase; even if I was “full feeling” I actually wasn’t, I just couldn’t stop eating; I didn’t understand it then, and even feared I was “binging” but after getting into 811, I realized that my body desperately needed additional calories and wasn’t gonna take ‘no’ for an answer. What helped was just locating the raw foods that I REALLY was craving, and eating A LOT of them, as much as I could fit.

I feel like your stomach will naturally adjust the more you feed it, and eventually your appetite may really encourage you to eat more. I’m thinking within the next two months or so; maybe sooner. Just tell you how it happened for me.

I feel much stronger now these days.

-not sure about the gas though.

you have to see if the hunger is really just that raw food feels different in your stomach. gas will be there for while.

  • Hello all! Im new to raw, about 1 month now. After the first couple of weeks, I would have days when I couldnt get enough to eat i was starving! Then I realized, those hungry days, would follow days that I didnt consume very many calories because I hadnt been hungry. I also realized, that for me, eating raw doesnt match the sensation in my stomach of being “full” or “satisfied” like when I eat pizza, or a hamburger and fries and a coke. ( in my former life :) ) I watched my son, who tries to eat raw most of the time, spend about 1 1/2 hours eating one thing after another, and thats when I realized he was searching and waiting for that full sensation. Once I got used to not feeling that and learning how to not let my self get too hungry, its been great. Getting my body mostly clean and light ( im not 100% ) helped me finally quit smoking. My whole sense of self, has been reinvented in mind, body, and spirit!
