Are all types of mustard raw?

I was under the impression that stone ground mustard is the only raw mustard. However, I’ve seen dijon mustard in quite a few raw recipes lately (for example, in some of Rhio’s raw recipes). Quite exciting as I love the taste of dijon. Is it raw, though? What about other mustard types?

any highly advertised mustard is not raw because it is made with of the heavily refined salt and preservatives. Make sure you read the ingredients carefully and watch out for salt, sugar, especially for the ones that you cant even pronunciate.stick with organic whole ground with no added salt. If you are in the mood for honey mustard then add some agave.

  • Basically commercial mustard is processed. In the manufacturing and processing  of mustard it is typically heated to above the 118 degree temperature threshold after which it is simmered and then cooled to room temperature before packaging. So, unfortunately, that alone makes it not raw.  However I did find a raw stone-ground mustard on Etsy recently... and you can always make your own!

There is a lot that you can do with mustard seeds!

  • Once upon a time, they used to chew mustard seeds during a meal to take away the taste of meat that had 'gone off'. Spices made rotten food taste better. Kind of a sickening thought, but true.

I don't like kale, so it does the same thing for me, but without the rotting meat part, thankfully.
